SUMMARY:Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will gather at the post office parking lot on Saturday\, May 10 to sort\, box and distribute food collected by letter carriers during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The food will be distributed to junior enlisted families and families in crisis through Military Outreach Ministries and New Day Urban Ministries. The Coronado-based public charity\, the Rick and Katie Moore Foundation\, needs volunteers to help with this process on Saturday afternoon. Each year\, about 5000-10000 pounds of food is distributed. The Foundation’s Serve4Good program allows volunteers to receive the blessings of helping neighbors in need. \nGenerally\, about 30 volunteers work from 3:30 to 6 pm and then the Foundation’s truck takes the sorted food to New Day Urban Ministries and Military Outreach Ministries food supply stations \nTo volunteer for sorting and boxing at the post office\, visit eventbrite.com. \nEach year\, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993\, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive\, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States. \nYou can help by joining letter carriers and partner organizations in the fight to end hunger by participating. Simply leave your donation of non-perishable food in a bag near your mailbox on May 10. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll photos courtesy of The Rick & Katie Moore Foundation.\n  \nRELATED 2018: \nStep Up to Stamp Out Hunger on May 12th

SUMMARY:Crown City Summer Fitness Challenge
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Event presented by the Optimist Club of Coronado \n \nRegistration is now open for the inaugural fitness event that runs from July 4 through Labor Day\, Sept. 1. The entry fee is $50 and sign up is available at the top of the Optimist Club home page at optimistclubofcoronado.org. \nThis is something new for Coronado – sort of. During the pandemic\, in 2020\, the City of Coronado sponsored a “virtual” activity challenge celebrating the 130th birthday of Coronado. Over 1\,800 individuals and 140 teams participated in that event. Virtual means that a participant performs one or more of their favorite physical activities\, then logs the amount of time it took on a website ’activities entry’ page for the event. The site keeps track of how all participants are doing\, with results displayed and continually updated. \nOne of the fun things about a virtual event is that individuals can participate even if they are not in Coronado — family members for example\, or people who travel. Even deployed service members could form a team or be part of a family team. Already signed up is a team that calls themselves the “Price Club.” Heading up that team is renown Coronado resident\, Peggy Price\, 102 years young! Her son Jimmy said that when her name and birth date were entered\, the website kept asking if her birth date was correct before finally accepting it. Of course\, teams from a variety of clubs in Coronado are most welcome. \nFundraising is a primary goal but so are having fun and staying physically fit. “Hours-per-Week” is the primary measure of achievement: Bronze – 1 hour; Silver – 2 hours; Gold – 3 hours; and Diamond – 4 hours or more. The challenge is appropriate for anyone regardless of age or health situation. A variety of fitness activities are included in the challenge with obvious differences in the stress levels associated with each. Several awards\, individual and team\, will take these differences into account. \nOnce registered\, simply log your time doing fitness activities during the 60-day period. An awards celebration is planned for Saturday\, Sept. 6 at 9 am in Spreckels Park. \nThe Optimist Club would greatly appreciate your participation in this event and hopes that it turns into a fun annual summer event. And remember\, all the funds raised will assist youth of Coronado in reaching their full potential.

SUMMARY:Yard Sale Fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado High School Jr. Optimist Club\, in conjunction with the Optimist Club of Coronado\, is hosting its annual fundraiser for childhood cancer research on Saturday\, July 12\, from 8 to 11:30 am at 777 H Ave\, and the community’s support is needed to make it a success. \nThe Jr. Optimist Club (JOI) is an international service and leadership organization focused on learning how to make a positive impact on the community. For example\, the club is involved in a multitude of activities\, which have included writing birthday cards to Veterans\, making holiday cards for residents in assisted living homes\, participating in Honor Flight San Diego\, organizing beach clean ups and food drives (Souper Bowl of Caring)\, and supporting events and efforts of the Coronado Community Center\, FOCUS\, PAWS\, and the Coronado Optimist Club. The group has even adopted a school in Barrio Logan that educates young mothers and expecting teens. \nOne of the biggest and most rewarding campaigns is the annual yard sale\, which is run in conjunction with the adult Optimist Club. It is so rewarding because 100% of the profits raised are used to support childhood cancer research. For the past several years\, yard sale funds have been donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation\, a charity dedicated to finding cures for childhood cancers\, and the plan is to again donate this year’s funds to St. Baldrick’s. \nThe sale this year features a wide selection of high-quality items\, including bikes\, surfboards\, outdoor furniture\, rugs\, a TV\, a ping pong table\, a baking stone\, clothing\, brand-new shoes and cleats\, craft items and much more. Thus\, there will be options for everyone. While organizing this yard sale can be a huge feat\, the best part about the JOI club is the lifelong friendships these kids make through activities such as this yard sale. \n“It really is fun looking at all the items\, meeting people in my neighborhood\, and hanging out with friends all for a good cause\,” said former JOI member Andrew Borgie. \nVisit the sale on Saturday\, July 12\, between 8 and 11:30 am at 777 H Ave and help support the Coronado JOI club and childhood cancer research. \nFor more information on JOI\, the Adult Optimist Club\, or the yard sale\, please contact JOI club advisor Erin at 619-675-1323. \nNov. 2009 – Shoppers look through the variety of goods for sale at a designated stop along the A1A Super Scenic 72-mile Garage Sale. EAR volunteers are specially trained to provide one-to-one reading support to students in grades 1-3 who need extra reading support. \nBoth Village and Silver Strand Elementary Schools have had EAR programs in the past\, but the program has been paused since the pandemic. \n“We are excited to bring this program back to our schools\,” said Senior Director of Learning Dr. Megan Battle. “It’s a proven and effective way to help students build reading skills and confidence\, and it also supports teachers by giving students the extra attention they need.” \nThe benefits of EAR reach both students and volunteers. Students gain valuable skills and build confidence\, which can lead to success in later grades. For volunteers\, it’s a meaningful opportunity to make a tangible difference in a child’s life while also building connections in the community. \nTo participate\, volunteers must complete a training session before working with students. CUSD is hosting a one hour workshop on Monday\, Nov. 17\, 9-10 am in the District Office\, 201 Sixth Street. Volunteers must also have a CUSD volunteer clearance including Livescan Fingerprint. The district will reimburse up to $50 for the cost of fingerprinting\, which can be used for all volunteering in the district for a lifetime. \n“We welcome all community members\, even without students in school\, to participate in this rewarding program. Some of our best volunteers are grandparents!” said Dr. Battle. \nVolunteers will coordinate directly with teachers to set schedules that work best for them. \nIf you are passionate about reading and want to make a positive impact\, this is a wonderful way to get involved. \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again for the Souper Bowl of Caring. This is a national event involving scouts\, church groups\, and any other service organization that chooses to be involved. The Coronado High and Middle School Jr Optimist club members are once again participating. \nThe students will be knocking on the doors of Coronado residents asking for non perishable food donations. This will take place on Sunday\, Feb. 8\, the same day as the big game. Don’t worry\, the collection endeavors start at 11 am and end before kickoff. \nThe campaign is already active. If you want to donate prior to the 8th\, please visit Sweat Circuit at 1007 Isabella Ave. in Coronado where a box for donations is in place. For pickup\, call club advisor Erin at 619-675-1323. \nDonations will go to Coronado Baptist Church where Pastor Roamer will see that this food goes to people in need.
