This event will double as the finale for the Library’s annual Summer Reading program for kids\, teens\, and adults. Attendees will enjoy a sweet treat at the end of the performance. \nThe mission of YLJC is to enrich young lives\, and the San Diego community where they live\, by inspiring imagination\, intellectual curiosity\, character\, and self-confidence through jazz music instruction provided to middle- and high-school students; to facilitate exclusive performance opportunities for young musicians at public venues; to promote diversity and inclusion; to foster awareness and appreciation of jazz music in the community through live performances and education.

Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. \nClosing out our Summer Festival is vocalist Joe Bourne presenting Great Gentlemen of Swing Blues and Pop. The repertoire will be a range of music from Lou Rawls\, Frank Sinatra and Friends\, Al Jarreau\, Nat King Cole\, Johnny Mathis\, Perry Como\, Louis Armstrong and a taste of Motown. \nBorn in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, Joe Bourne was inspired by many of the big names of jazz and popular music that toured the Boston area. Whether it’s a swinging rendition of the fun song “Goody Goody\,” Oscar Brown’s philosophical “Dat Dere\,” Errol Garner’s romantic ballad “Misty” or his special tribute to the great Nat King Cole\, Joe always captures the audience with his own style\, warm mellifluous jazz baritone voice\, and dynamic showmanship. Joe has shared the stage with Natalie Cole\, Ray Charles\, Nina Simone\, Dionne Warwick and several other jazz and popular music greats. \nOver the years Joe has received several prestigious awards such as The Diamond of the Year award presented by The Bund Botschafter Ohne Grenzen\, and the Kunstler des Jahres (Artist of the Year award)\, both for top-class entertainment in Germany. He has also been honored with the Silver Orpheus in Bulgaria and the Jimmy Kennedy award in Ireland\, both for his special presentation of Gershwin’s “Summertime.” \n

To kickoff our series\, Irving Flores will play a crowd pleasing selection of music. \n\nIrving Flores is an accomplished pianist\, composer\, arranger and music producer. He has performed with Bill Watrous\, Charles McPherson\, Abraham Laboriel\, Poncho Sanchez\, Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Alex Acuna\, Akira Jimbo\, Rene Camacho\, Cuba’s “El Negro” Hernandez\, Gilbert Castellanos\, Peter Sprague. \nHis music arrangements also include a “Tribute to Frank Sinatra\,” performed by the San Diego Chamber Orchestra\, an arrangement for strings for Luis Miguel\, and an orchestral arrangement for The San Diego Symphony.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Library for our Autumn Concert Series on Fridays from September 3 to October 21. Each concert will begin at 1 pm in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. This week’s series will feature flutist and saxophonist Adrienne Nims. \n\nAdrienne Nims is a flutist and saxophonist whose passionate energy is well acclaimed. Though her early formal training focused on classical music\, she quickly developed a deep interest in jazz and world music. In addition to piano and flute\, by age 13 she was also playing the saxophone and performing professionally in big bands and classical ensembles. Adrienne’s group\, Sprit Wind\, has performed at venues such as the Getty Museum of Los Angeles\, California Center for the Arts\, the San Diego Zoo\, and major jazz festivals and classical music series. In her professional career\, Adrienne has opened for Spyro Gyra\, Kirk Whalum\, Joe Cocker\, Fourplay\, Don MacLean\, Boz Scraggs\, Steppenwolf\, and more. She is an accomplished studio musician with credits on over 50 CDs including her own\, and television soundtracks as well. In addition to her work as a performing and recording artist\, Adrienne is also an educator teaching flute and saxophone as well as a masterclass presenter for institutes and foundations. \n

For this week’s performance\, violinist Regina Tolley will be playing romantic and popular songs from the 1920s to today. \n\nRegina Tolley is an accomplished acoustic and electric violinist based out of San Diego. \nShe first fell in love with the violin at age nine\, when she saw the local middle school orchestra perform. After years of orchestral and ensemble experiences throughout middle school and high school\, she decided to pursue her passion for music at Point Loma Nazarene University\, where she graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Music and a minor in Pre-Therapeutic Psychology. \nTolley has been a session and performing musician for over 15 year with artists like Rihanna and Louis XIV\, and has toured with bands locally\, throughout the United States\, and in Canada and Europe. \nWhen she’s not performing for weddings and other events\, you can find her teaching private and group lessons in her music studio\, tracking live strings for bands/artists or feature films\, and creating her own original songs.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the beautiful melodies and high-energy rhythms of samba and bossa nova — music made famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sergio Mendes. This performance is inspired by the sunny beaches of Rio. Musicians Mark Danisovsky\, Jeff Pekarek\, Jim Lair\, Ray Conseur\, and Jean and Mike Stewart will perform an afternoon of toe-tapping fun for all ages.\n\n\nJean and Mike Stewart (guitar/vocals)\nJim Lair (keyboard and vocals) \nJean\, Mike and Jim formed the “Raggle Taggle Band” over 30 years ago\, providing themed entertainment at most of San Diego’s landmarks such as the San Diego Zoo\, San Diego Safari Park\, SeaWorld\, the Star of India and the grand openings for Seaport Village\, The Old Globe\, and Horton Plaza. The band performed jazz\, swing\, bossa nova\, Celtic\, traditional sea shanty and English Renaissance music. Jean and Mike also specialize in live music programs for young children\, and performed beloved weekly storytimes at Coronado Library for 10 years. \nMark Danisovszky (Accordionist and Piano) Mark is a masterful musician performing professionally for Italian\, French\, Jewish\, Oktoberfest\, Irish\, tango and jazz concerts and events as a soloist and in ensembles. \nJeff Pekarek (aka Basile) (Bass\, Guitar\, Cello and Bouzouki) Jeff has over 30 years of experience as a professional musician and entertainer in numerous musical genres. He is also a music arranger and recording producer\, an expert in international traditional folk music\, and has taught classical and electric guitar\, string bass and cello at The Bishop’s school in La Jolla. \nRay Conseur (Drums/Percussion) Ray is a drummer\, as well as a master of the cajon (rhythm box) and various exotic percussion instruments. He fine-tuned his craft playing traditional jazz at a number of well-known jazz festivals. He has performed in various groups ranging from Celtic\, flamenco\, Brazilian and steampunk\, and has traveled with numerous successful jazz\, rock and world-beat bands. \n

At this week’s performance\, guitarist Fred Benedetti will perform Spanish classical and flamenco pieces\, along with original and popular music\, tunes played on an instrument built in 1830\, and some ukulele music.\n\n\nBenedetti has been playing the guitar since he was nine years old. He loves playing all styles of music and switches among a ukulele\, baritone guitar\, and double-neck guitar. His biggest influences are his father\, The Beatles\, and Andres Segovia. Benedetti’s guitar has taken him throughout the United States\, England\, Germany\, the Czech Republic\, Canada\, Taiwan and Mexico. He has played locally as a solo act\, as part of a guitar duo\, and in a trio with his daughters. Benedetti has appeared onstage with the San Diego Symphony\, San Diego Opera\, Starlight Opera\, American Ballet Company\, Luciano Pavarotti\, and Dave Brubeck. He is an emeritus professor of music at Grossmont College where he is the head of the guitar studies program. Dignitaries he has performed for include the King and Queen of Malaysia\, Mikhail Gorbachev\, and Ravi Shankar. And he did get to play for his idol Andres Segovia\, in 1986. \n
