DESCRIPTION:Join the Library for the 2022 Summer Festival Jazz Concerts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library and Hotel Del Coronado\, concerts will take place every other Friday from June 3 through August 26. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. \nOur featured performer for July 1 is The Garners performing a “Cowboy Bebop Gypsy Crawl.”  The Garners are a modern vintage duo/trio that embraces gypsy jazz\, 1920’s and 30’s jazz\, blues\, and folk. We are writers of music as well\, and you will find that the inspiration behind our originals comes from these classic eras/genres. \nRaggedly sophisticated\, The Garners’ mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Uke\, Jon on Gypsy Guitar\, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts\, our music will transport you back when times were harder\, yet the good times\, more colorful\, vibrant\, and bold. \n\nPerformer Bios: \nShe’s a little bit country\, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well\, sort of. Lorelei\, vocals and ukulele\, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon\, vocals and guitar\, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday\, Lester Young\, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music\, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October\, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig\, teach\, compose\, and record. They can be found performing their blend of swing classics\, gypsy jazz\, Americana\, and originals all over Southern California.

Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. \nOn Friday\, July 17\, San Diego lounge scenestress Erika Davies will perform jazz standards by the likes of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald or doing her version of Sinatra or Nat King Cole tunes. She’ll also showcase some original compositions in this sure-to-please concert. \n\nPerformer Bio: \nErika Davies was born in Arizona to a military family\, her father a career Navy officer and her mother a country singer/guitarist. The first time Davies sang in public was at age 8\, appearing on stage with her mom in a Virginia bar. In 1991\, her family settled in San Diego\, where she has remained (other than a brief stay in Arizona). She first came to local attention singing with former Rugburn Gregory Page\, who encouraged her to write songs and strike out on her own as a solo artist. \nWhen she isn’t singing\, she’s busy playing the role of seamstress for Spicy Toast\, her clothing company. “Handmade\, one of a kind\,” she explains. “A little one-woman show run out of my home…. I’m responsible for the cutting\, sewing\, and designing of all my garments. I have been sewing for over six years and work with a Serger sewing machine\, plus a conventional stitch machine. “It’s quite boring to sew the same thing over and over\,” she adds. “I do make variations of a design. I currently sell [my work] on eBay.” \nShe says young audiences aren’t always receptive to her retro Tin Pan Alley-inspired sound; she recalls “waiting behind stage\, witnessing P.O.D.\, and then stepping out onstage to accompany the glorious Mr. [Gregory] Page in songs reminiscent of ‘happier times.’ Those P.O.D. fans loved what they were hearing so very much. They threw presents our way — toilet paper rolls\, empty beer bottles\, etc. It was nice.” \nMiss Davies performs original compositions and early-20th-century classics\, often accompanied by guitarist John Garner. She has also teamed up with singer Gary Hankins (Scarlet Symphony)\, with whom she became engaged in early 2011.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Library for the 2022 Summer Festival Jazz Concerts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library and Hotel del Coronado\, concerts will take place every other Friday from June 3 to August 26. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. \nOn Friday\, July 29\, the Uptown Rhythm Makers will showcase their unique style of authentic New Orleans style traditional jazz. A staple of the San Diego music scene since 2003\, they’ve performed at the California Center for the Arts and the San Diego Jazz Fest. This concert will show off their range and feature favorites from traditional jazz hits and songs written especially for jazz bands in the 1920s and 1930s. If you listen closely\, you’ll recognize tunes from  King Oliver\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Louis Armstrong\, Isham Jones\, Duke Ellington\, Spencer Williams\, and more. \n\nPerformer Bios: \nBruce Vermazen\, cornet & vocals: Bruce is a retired Cal Berkeley professor and jazz cornetist since his teens. He is also a published jazz historian and has led jazz and ragtime orchestras in San Diego and the Bay Area. \nBob Andersen\, trombone & leader: Bob works part-time as a home health Occupational Therapist and  leads the Uptown Rhythm Makers. He was a member of the seminal post-Katrina New Orleans trad jazz revival band\, the Loose Marbles. \nJim Fiedler\, clarinet: Jim is a retired Navy veteran and a professional jazz clarinetist since high school in the late ’60s. \nArmand Frigon\, guitar: Armand is a former college music professor and professional jazz guitarist since the ’70s. \nJeremy Eikam\, string bass: Jeremy is a high school music teacher and band director\, and an in demand bassist around San Diego. \nRay Conseur\, drums: Ray teaches part-time with the San Diego USD and has been a professional drummer since the ’70s. \n
