SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Steve Torok
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 4 we welcome Steve Torok on the saxophone with a jazz performance we know you’ll be captivated by. \n \n\nSteve Torok has performed with Stevie Wonder\, Usher\, The Temptations\, Adam Levine\, Jamey Johnson\, Four Tops\, Sheila E\, Barry Manilow\, O’Jays\, Whispers\, Mary Wilson\, Brian Bromberg\, Pete Escovedo\, Taj Mahal\, Toni Tennille\, Tony Orlando\, and Bob Florence\, among others. His saxophone playing and arrangements have been featured on numerous national recordings\, including the hit TV shows The Voice and American Idol. He has written and recorded jingles that have aired for CNN International’s audience. Notable artists\, including Fred Wesley\, Kenny G\, Ernie Watts\, Tom Scott\, Mike Stern\, Brian Bromberg\, and Carmen Bradford\, have performed his arrangements. His work is featured on contemporary jazz CDs\, such as Point of View (1998) and This Is Gospel: Inspirational Jazz (2001). Steve created original music for a concert-length dance work entitled A-Scent Between Stream and Consciousness in 2014\, revised and restaged in 2018. In 2017\, Steve adapted and arranged the music of Prince for the modern dance work Prince 2 Prince\, which was modified and restaged in 2019. His recording\, Eye to Eye\, co-produced by Dan Siegel\, represents an array of Steve’s works: originals\, arrangements of standards\, arrangements of Star Wars music (commissioned and premiered live for Lucasfilm\, Ltd.)\, and music with elephant percussionists. Eye to Eye is a Global Music Award Winner for composition and originality/creativity. The recording has been featured on San Diego’s Jazz 88.3\, the international Star Wars podcast Coffee with Kenobi\, and positively reviewed by JAZZed Magazine and the websites Jazz Corner\, No Depression\, and AXS. Steve was also profiled with a feature article in the San Diego Union-Tribune. \nSteve is an award-winning faculty member at MiraCosta College in Oceanside\, CA. He teaches saxophone\, improvisation\, music theory\, and history and directs MOJO (MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra) and the Jazz Collective. In 2023\, 2022\, and 2017\, the premiere jazz publication Downbeat named MOJO the Large Jazz Ensemble Winner among community college bands in the national Downbeat Student Music Awards. MOJO received 2015\, 2016\, 2018\, 2021\, and 2023 Downbeat Student Music Awards for Outstanding Large Jazz Ensemble Performance. Additionally\, the Jazz Collective received 2023 and 2017 Downbeat Student Music Awards for Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Performance. MOJO has received letters of commendation from the United States Congress and the California Legislature. Steve was selected as a clinician for the 2019 JEN (Jazz Education Network) Conference in Reno\, and the Jazz Collective was invited to premiere a specially commissioned work. MOJO was a featured performer for the 2023\, 2017\, and 2015 JEN Conferences in New Orleans and San Diego. Steve was a presenter at the 2017 and 2015 JEN Conferences and the 2018 National College Music Society Conference in Vancouver and was invited to present at the 2019 international conference in Belgium. Steve taught in London in 2019 as a prestigious Study Abroad Program faculty member. \nSteve holds a BFA in saxophone performance from Carnegie Mellon University and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California. He has achieved ABD status in the music education doctoral program at Boston University. On October 11 we welcome Josh Weinstein on piano performing all the hits\, both contemporary and classical. \n \n\nJosh Weinstein is a working composer\, arranger\, producer\, and pianist/organist/keyboard player originally from New York. His 2008 album “Love & Alcohol” received airplay on nearly 300 stations worldwide\, CMJ charted\, and was licensed by MTV. His previous album “Brooklyn Is Sinking” appeared on “Best of 2006” lists at both WFUV and npr.org. \nJosh is active as both a sideman and featured performer in nightclubs\, concert stages and recording studios. He appears on albums and in videos for artists in multiple genres\, with mainstage appearances at festivals and show venues worldwide and an active freelance schedule of several hundred dates per year. \nWhen he’s not performing or recording\, he teaches college courses on American popular music\, Western classical music\, and a variety of World Music practices. SUMMARY:CoSA Instrumental Music Fall Recital
DESCRIPTION:Coronado musician Matt Heinecke is back and excited to bring Coronado School of the Arts’ (CoSA) talented young artists on stage for their first concert of the year. The CoSA Instrumental Music Fall Recital is happening in the Black Box Theatre at 650 D Avenue on Tuesday\, October 15 at 6pm. \nThe recital will feature a string quintet\, jazz ensemble\, woodwind trio\, saxophone trio\, and an all-new brass quintet. Several solo pianists will also be featured. For many of the students\, it will be their first time performing in a small\, intimate setting where they can really connect with their audience\, according to Heinecke. \n“Our focus is to provide students with real-life experiences as professional musicians\, which makes these small ensembles such a great opportunity\,” said Heinecke. “To get that experience in high school is invaluable.” \nHeinecke\, who has chaired the Instrumental Music Conservatory in the past\, has a long relationship with many of the young artists and is happy to work with them again. \n“I have taught many of these students since they were in middle school\, some as early as 4th grade\, and it is very special to see them level up and take on these new challenges\,” said Heinecke. “I’m excited to back as CoSA’s music department director!” \nTickets range from $5-$10 and are available for purchase on EventBrite. \nThe CoSA Instrumental Music Conservatory emphasizes the study of classical and jazz music. Students receive intensive training in their chosen instruments in wind\, percussion\, brass\, jazz and string. Students also study music theory\, ear training\, jazz theory and improvisation\, electronic music skills\, composition and orchestration. \nClasses are also offered in music history and culture\, music technology and the music business. Students play piano\, drums\, violin\, viola\, cello\, saxophone\, electric guitar\, tuba\, trombone or any other instrument they desire to learn. CoSA Instrumental Music students are passionate about their craft\, and many go on to study music in college\, or continue to perform as adults. \nAbout CoSA\nCoronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, home to 200 scholar artists grades 9 through 12\, who attend the nationally ranked Coronado High School. CoSA provides an intense\, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego\, who are admitted after a competitive application/audition process.\nEach school day CoSA offers three or more hours of instruction\, pairing young artists with educators who are also industry specialists. With a curriculum designed by professional artist/educators\, students are immersed in their chosen specialty in one of six conservatories: Classical and Contemporary Dance\, Digital Arts (Animation\, Filmmaking\, Game Design\, and Graphic Design)\, Instrumental Music\, Musical Theatre & Drama\, Theatre Production\, Design & Management and Visual Art. CoSA is a State of California-approved Career Technical Education program.\nOur award-winning student artists perform and exhibit at the Coronado Performing Arts Center on the Coronado High School campus\, in either the 570 seat Main Stage or 80 seat Black Box theatre. On October 18 we welcome Kimmi Bitter who is taking the country music scene by storm and won the Song of the Year at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards. \n \n\n“The future of classic country is Kimmi Bitter\,” as Saving Country Music boldly states. Driven by a hyper-obsession for the 1960s\, Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang create a captivating soundscape that blends golden-era Countrypolitan with psychedelic twangs and a mod flair. \nCreating a buzz from her grassroots efforts and vigorous touring\, her debut album “Old School” hit the ground running in 2024 landing on the Top 25 Americana Album Radio Chart and has garnered three separate song nominations to date. Tracks like the tear-jerking ballad “My Grass is Blue” have grown comparisons of time when Patsy Cline and The Jordanaires overtook the radio waves. Saving Country Music called it “solid country gold\,” nominating it for Single of the Year alongside the likes of Charley Crockett and Sierra Ferrell. SUMMARY:Oktoberfest Concert with The Beer Mugs
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Oktoberfest with Coronado’s own Bavarian band\, The Beer Mugs! The band plays authentic Bavarian polkas and waltzes using the traditional instrumentation of two clarinets\, a trumpet\, a trombone\, and a tuba. \nOktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (“people’s festival”). It is held annually in Munich\, Bavaria\, running from late September through the first Sunday in October. The festival features music\, dancing\, and beer drinking. The Beer Mugs will intersperse tunes with interesting facts about Oktoberfest when they perform at the Coronado Public Library.

We close out this year’s series with Adrienne Nims\, who will take us on a musical journey with lush harmonies\, mystical melodies\, and global rhythms. \n\n\n\nAdrienne Nims’ passionate energy and dazzling musicianship are well acclaimed. As featured solo artist\, or with her talented band\, Spirit Wind\, Adrienne creates an unforgettable and inspiring entertainment experience. Adrienne’s dynamic\, sensual voice on the saxophones\, flutes\, and many more global indigenous instruments express not only a vast array of musical culture and style\, but also the magic and mystery of Life! \nSpirit Wind\, Adrienne’s own band\, feature Adrienne on soprano\, alto\, and tenor saxes\, as well as many different flutes\, including traditional western\, Native American\, Indian\, African\, and Asian flutes\, performing contemporary jazz and global music throughout the United States and internationally.  Mastery of so many different instruments and musical genres including rock\, jazz\, blues\, classical\, theater\, Zen\, Irish/folk\, and more have allowed Adrienne to dazzle spellbound audiences while seamlessly moving from one instrument and one genre to another.  Adrienne is a mainstay in the recording industry. \nAdrienne Nims and Spirit Wind have enjoyed performing at such well known venues as the Getty Museum of Los Angeles\, the California Center for the Arts\, the San Diego Zoo\, Quail Botanical Gardens\, and at major jazz festivals.  Having played with the Larry Mitchell Band\, Lester Abrams\, Native Vibe and the Mad Dogs and Englishmen.  Adrienne hs opened for such greats as Spyro Gyra\, Kirk Whalum\, Joe Cocker\, Al DiMeola\, Fourplay\, Steppenwolf\, Najee\, Boney James and Boz Scaggs\, just to name a few! Adrienne has been called to perform for charity benefits and at major celebrity invitationals. \nHer passion\, versatility\, and true love for the arts became self-evident in Adrienne’s involvement with such local delights as Lambs Player’s Theater\, the Diversionary Theater\, the La Jolla Stage\, and the Lyceum Theatre. Experience her expressive depth and technical brilliance as she performs timeless pieces by composers like Chopin\, Beethoven\, and Liszt. \n \nAbout Ines \nIndonesian-born pianist Ines Irawati is in demand as a solo recitalist\, a collaborative pianist\, and a vocal coach. Her recent engagements include performances for TEDxSan Diego at Copley Symphony Hall\, the Art of Élan\, Musikamar chamber concerts\, concerts in Centro Cultural Tijuana\, and performances all over Southern California. She is a member of the Hidden Valley Virtuosi and a founding member of the acclaimed Aviara Trio\, a piano trio described as the “highest level of instrumental perfection\, intensity\, passion\, and expression.” She has collaborated with many other esteemed chamber musicians such as violinist Cindy Wu\, cellist Sophie Webber\, double-bassist Jeremy Kurtz-Harris\, Strings of the West\, and the Hyperion String Quartet. She founded MusiKamar\, a music series which brings exquisite chamber music performances into smaller and intimate spaces.  Ms. Irawati has served as the musical and artistic director of San Diego Opera Young Artist Training Program\, where she curated the company’s outreach concert series\, Opera Exposed!\, and its production of Little Red Riding Hood\, a children’s opera by Seymour Barab. She has been involved in multiple projects with Bodhi Tree Concerts\, including as the music director for the San Diego premiere of two chamber operas\, Aftermath by Nicolas Reveles and Autumn Valentine by Ricky Ian Gordon. \nMs. Irawati studied at Cleveland Institute of Music with Olga Radoslavjevich\, and at Yale University where she studied with Claude Frank\, Peter Frankl and Kikuei Ikeda of the Tokyo String Quartet. She lives in San Diego with her husband\, two children and their two dogs.

DESCRIPTION:Experience the season with an enchanting afternoon of classical guitar. From delicate melodies to vibrant rhythms\, this performance by Hugo Nogueira will blow you away. \n \nAbout Hugo Nogueira:  \nHugo Nogueira won the 2011 American Guitar Society competition in Los Angeles\, California. After attending three prestigious conservatories in Brazil (and studying with one of the most renowned Brazilian guitar pedagogues\, Henrique Pinto)\, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Composition in 2007 and a teaching credential in 2010. Hugo continued his studies earning his Master’s Degree in Guitar Performance at Azusa Pacific University. Additionally\, he has had masterclasses with world class guitarists such as Ana Vidovic\, Jason Vieaux\, Scott Tennant\, and Marc Teicholz. \nHugo has also participated at guitar festivals such as La Guitarra in San Luis Obispo\, Sierra Nevada Guitar Festival\, and New Mexico Guitar Festival. In 2012\, Hugo Nogueira performed and gave masterclasses at Cal State San Bernardino and University of Redlands. Awarded an assistantship in the fall of 2013\, Hugo began to work on his Doctorate in Classical Guitar Performance at UNLV with the internationally acclaimed concert guitarist\, Ricardo Cobo. \nIn 2014 and 2015\, Hugo was invited to be part of the guitar competition committee at the Clark County School District\, Las Vegas Academy of Arts\, and Junior festival in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nIn the last few years\, Hugo has been performing in different states across the U.S such as California\, Wyoming\, Nevada\, New Mexico\, Florida\, Ohio\, Washington DC\, and Michigan. In May 2017\, Hugo Nogueira graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts. In 2018\, Dr. Nogueira was invited by the South Bay MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) to give a lecture-recital about the Spanish composer\, Francisco Tárrega. In following years\, Dr. Nogueira performed with in Panamá\, Portugal\, Brazil\, England\, USA and Norway. Dr. Nogueira is currently teaching classical guitar at Los Angeles Pierce College\, Oxnard College\, and Ventura College in Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:Spend a lovely Valentine’s Day afternoon listening to the beautiful music of the cello\, featuring Peter Ko and Robert Bui. \n\nAbout Peter Ko:  \nPraised as “particularly moving” (San Diego Story) and showing “extraordinary musicianship with unbroken focus … fierce and committed” (San Diego Union Tribune)\, Peter Ko is a San Diego based cellist\, collaborating with musical artists such as Steve Schick\, Joshua Rubin\, Mark Fewer\, and the Dover String Quartet. As a performer\, his training and projects have taken him across the USA\, Mexico\, Canada\, and Europe\, performing in festivals such as soundSCAPE\, SICPP\, Darmstädter Ferienkurse\, the Green Box Arts Festival\, and Neofonía Festival de Música Nueva Ensenada. Peter currently serves as principal cellist for the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus\, has been featured with Yarn/Wire\, Project [BLANK]\, and San Diego New Music. \nAbout Robert Bui:  \nRobbie Bui is a versatile cellist\, able to perform classical canon\, pop improvisation\, and contemporary avant-garde. He is grounded by an additional background in composition\, and holds degrees from New England Conservatory and UC San Diego. Specializing in new music interpretation\, he has been dedicated dozens of pieces as a soloist and chamber musician\, and is recognized in ensembles such as East Coast Contemporary Ensemble\, Palimpsest Ensemble\, and Alinéa. \nBeyond cello\, he’s a reliable pianist\, good violinist\, and not-so-good flutist. Beyond the stage\, he works as the Patron Services and Office Manager of La Jolla Symphony and Chorus\, and as a freelance portrait/event photographer. And beyond work\, he learns languages\, tailors clothes\, cuts hair\, and can make really great coffee.

Register below for email reminders. \nAbout the Musician:  \nRick Ross\, multi-talented pianist\, saxophonist and vocalist performs a vast array of music with vocal styles from jazz standards to Broadway\, pop and classic rock tunes. A native of Indianapolis\, Indiana\, Ross attended Cornell University in New York\, where he received a BA Degree in German Area Studies. He also earned a Master’s in Hotel Management from Cornell. Rick Ross first pursued his musical calling as a saxophonist performing in jazz bands and ensembles including the Indianapolis Symphonic Orchestra. He began to hone his performance skills while studying abroad in Germany\, playing sax in a Latin band and solo piano engagements in the university town of Göttingen. He returned to the United States to complete his college degree and soon became a regularly featured performer for events on Cornell campus. After receiving his Master’s Degree\, Rick worked for the InterContinental Hotel in San Diego. However\, it wasn’t long before he left his career in hotel operations and created his one man show on piano\, sax and vocals. A uniquely versatile musician\, Rick Ross adds a compelling ambiance to any special occasion.

SUMMARY:Violin and Harp Duet: A Philharmonia Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra presents a violin and harp duet on Friday\, April 21 at 1 p.m. Ciara Dabkoswski (violin) and Stefan Wendel (harp) will be playing Saint-Saens’ Fantaisie for Violin & Harp\, Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango\, and Kreutzer-Boscha’s Nocturne No.1 in Bb. \nStefan Wendel and Ciara Dabkowski are a violin and harp duo from San Diego. They met playing for the Villa Musica Summer Orchestra in 2016 and regularly perform together in various ensembles\, including the Coronado Philharmonia\, City Ballet Orchestra\, and La Jolla Symphony. Stefan received his degree in harp performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London and now serves as principal harpist with the City Ballet Orchestra while pursuing a graduate degree in Mathematics. Ciara received her degree in Mathematics from UCSD and in addition to her career as a software engineer\, serves as orchestra manager and librarian for both the City Ballet Orchestra and Villa Musica Summer Orchestra. \nDoors open at 12:45 p.m. Seating is first come\, first served. \n\nCiara Dabkowski is a violinist and software engineer from San Diego. In addition to performing with the Coronado Philharmonia\, La Jolla Symphony\, and other local ensembles\, she is the orchestra manager and librarian for both the City Ballet Orchestra and the Villa Musica Summer Orchestra. \nStefan Wendel began playing the harp at the age of six\, here in San Diego. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in London with a Bachelor’s in Harp Performance\, he turned to San Diego and has played in many wonderful local groups including the Coronado Philharmonic Orchestra\, Musica Vitale\, and the San Diego City Ballet Orchestra. He also enthusiastically participates in community-driven performances that range from solo recitals\, chamber music concerts\, musical theater productions\, and Japanese folk music events. When he is not playing music\, Stefan enjoys practicing Tai Chi\, learning Argentine Tango\, and studying pure mathematics.
