The Spreckels were two of Coronado\, and San Diego’s\, most powerful residents in the late 19th and early 20th century. With fine music\, historical tidbits\, and light refreshments\, this event will bring a bit of Coronado’s past into our today. \nNashville playwright Debbie Mathis Watts and veteran actor Tom Dolan will don customs as Lillie and John as they portray this legendary couple whose leadership in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought unprecedented prosperity to San Diego and Coronado. \nDebbie\, as Lillie\, will perform during the tea historical monologues\, punctuated with piano-vocal renditions of classical piano performances just like John and Lillie Spreckels could have presented in their music room in their Coronado home on Glorietta Bay. Lillie was the wife of a powerful man but did not live in John’s shadow. Lillie\, an accomplished singer from the garden state of New Jersey originally\, she brought her flower growing skills\, first to Hawaii\, where Queen Liliokalani shared some of her flower secrets and then settling in Coronado with her husband John. \nDebbie’s book\, “John and Lillie Spreckels: Diaries\, Desserts\, and San Diego Dreams\,” includes fictionalized diary entries that reveal John and Lillie’s deep love for each other\, with stories from their seafaring adventures along the West Coast. The Spreckels contributions to the San Diego region include the railway\, the Hotel Del Coronado\, The Spreckels Library\, and The Spreckels Theatre. Because much of the couple’s fortune was made from the sugar-refining business\, Debbie decided to add a recipe section that includes some of the desserts Lillie may have prepared for her beloved husband and children. Registration is not required. \n\nThe San Diego Jewish Men’s Choir (SDJMC) has been performing for over 16 years. The choir has more than 25 members who share a common goal — the preservation and promotion of Jewish choral music. They fulfill this mission through concerts\, recordings\, community outreach events\, and appearances at festivals. The choir is affiliated with the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity in Los Angeles\, a non-profit organization sharing similar goals. \nUnder the musical direction of Ruth Weber\, the men’s choir performs over 30 concerts a year throughout the Southern California area. They have been featured on the Chabad Telethon\, on the documentary\, Forever Strong\, releasing in July 2015\, and as back up singers for the Grammy nominated children’s artist Mr. G. They perform music of all styles including\, liturgical\, pop\, folk\, gospel and musical theater\, and sing in Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, and Ladino.

SUMMARY:Summer Festival Jazz Concert Series featuring the Rob Thorsen Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library for the 2022 Summer Festival Jazz Concerts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library and Hotel del Coronado\, concerts will take place every other Friday from June 3 through August 26. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. \nKicking off our series is the Rob Thorsen Jazz Quartet on Friday\, June 3. The Quartet will present an afternoon concert of Jazz\, Latin and original music. Led by San Diego bassist\, composer and educator Rob Thorsen\, this concert will showcase the talents of this award winning ensemble. Rob found his true calling with the upright bass after playing guitar\, flute\, saxophone and tuba growing up. “When I began playing upright bass\, the fact that I felt the sound as much as heard it had a profound effect on me. I was hooked for life.” \nJoining him will be Alexander Anderson\, a forward-thinking pianist\, keyboardist\, composer\, and arranger with a bent toward mixing ’70s- influenced jazz and fusion with contemporary hip-hop and R&B. \n16 year old saxophonist Nick Caldwell is a multiple National Young Arts award winner on both tenor and alto saxophone. He recently played at the Monterey Jazz Festival with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and performed in New York with bassist Russell Hall. He has been performing professionally since the age of 11. \nDrummer Tyler Kreutel graduated from the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in music at CSU Long Beach. He performs regularly with Gilbert Castellanos\, Joshua White\, Charles McPherson\, Marshall Hawkins and others. \n\nRegister at cplevents.org to receive reminder emails for this event. \n
