SUMMARY:Coronado VFW’s Annual POW/MIA Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado VFW Post 2422 invites the community to its Annual POW/MIA Dinner on Friday\, Sept. 19. The evening is organized by the Post with the support of VFW Auxiliary volunteers. \nThe 2024 POW/MIA Dinner speakers were Paul Granger (CAPT USAF) and Albert Molinare (LT USN)\, both POW survivors. Photo courtesy of VFW Post 2422.\nGuests will hear from two Coronado residents: Lou De Beer (LCPL\, USMC)\, a Korean War veteran and World War II prison camp survivor\, and Taylor Stockdale\, son of VADM James Stockdale\, Medal of Honor recipient and senior officer held as a POW in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. Taylor’s mother\, Sybil Stockdale\, led the formation of the League of Families in the 1970s\, pushing the Pentagon and Department of Defense to release vital POW/MIA information to families. Col. Chris Ellinger (USMC\, Ret.) will serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies. \nA suggested donation of $20 reserves a seat\, with fewer than 80 seats available. Tickets may be purchased at the Coronado VFW Post\, 557 Orange Avenue. Dinner will feature pasta Bolognese with meatball\, or a vegetarian primavera pasta with spinach\, mushrooms\, and seasonal vegetables\, accompanied by Caesar salad\, artisan bread with butter\, and a dessert tray of brownies and lemon bites. \nGuests are asked to arrive at 5 p.m. for seating; the program begins at 5:30 p.m. Dress is casual. \nThe Coronado VFW thanks you for your support to the organization and veterans.

Banners for the honorees will be displayed in November through mid-May along the “Avenue of Heroes\,” located along Third and Fourth Streets from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island. \nThe Avenue of Heroes is a military service recognition program sponsored by the City of Coronado and the Avenue of Heroes Committee. The program provides the Coronado community the opportunity to honor the many men and women who are or have lived in the city during their military careers. DESCRIPTION:Coronado Firefighters\, Police\, Lifeguards and local military personnel are set to gather at Fire Station 36 early on the morning of Sunday\, Sept. 11\, for a brief 9/11 memorial ceremony. Coronado’s first responders will mark the attacks of that day starting at 6:53 am with an invocation\, a moment of silence and a symbolic ringing of the station’s bell. The ceremony\, which will conclude with bagpipes\, is an opportunity to remember the nearly 3\,000 people who died in the terrorist attacks. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join CHA for a free informational forum about the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan. In 2003\, the City of Coronado and community members developed the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan to “provide a policy and regulatory bridge between the city of Coronado General Plan and individual\, project-level development.” The City Council approved the Specific Plan in 2004 after multiple community workshops and citizen involvement and have made amendments to the plan through 2014. According to Chapter VI\, the Commercial Zone Design Criteria\, “the purpose of the design criteria is to protect the special identity of the commercial areas of Coronado\,” in particular\, the special “village” character. \nThe forum will be led by Phil Monroe and other members of the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan Committee who will discuss the development and history of the plan. \n
