SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: The Mist by Stephen King
DESCRIPTION:Spoilers Book Club\nThe Spoilers Book Club reads books that are turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \nEvent Details\n\nIn the wake of a summer storm\, terror descends…David Drayton\, his son Billy\, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there\, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves\, a religious zealot\, Mrs. Carmody\, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly\, staying in the store may prove fatal\, and the Draytons\, along with store employee Ollie Weeks\, Amanda Dumfries\, Irene Reppler\, and Dan Miller\, attempt to make their escape. But what’s out there may be worse than what they left behind. \nThis exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine. \nThe Mist (Rated R)\n2007\n2h 6m

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Firekeeper's Daughter" by Angeline Boulley
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering. Registration is not required. \n \nFor our September meeting\, we will discuss the 2022 Printz Medal winner Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley\, a groundbreaking young adult thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community. \nAbout Firekeeper’s Daughter:  \nEighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in\, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college\, but when family tragedy strikes\, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie\, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. \nYet even as Daunis falls for Jamie\, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder\, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. \nReluctantly\, Daunis agrees to go undercover\, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined\, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time\, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. \nNow\, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing\, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community\, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

SUMMARY:Democratic Club General Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next general membership meeting of the Coronado Democratic Club will be held on Saturday\, November 19th\, in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library. Doors open at 10:30 am and the meeting will begin at 11 am. \nLocal resident Kevin Ashley will give a brief overview of the early history of the African American community in Coronado\, covering the period from 1885 until World War II. Kevin spent the past several years researching the nearly forgotten history of Coronado’s pioneering African American community. He previously shared some of this research on his blog\, The Coronado Black History Project. Kevin is currently collaborating with the Coronado Historical Association\, the San Diego History Center\, and a granddaughter of former Coronado resident Cynthia Hudgins to publish Cynthia Hudgins’ remarkable memoir The Other Side of the Fence: Life on Both Sides of the Color Line. The book is scheduled for release in February of 2023 to coincide with Black History Month. \nIn the spirit of the holiday season\, we will also be accepting donations at the meeting for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank\, a non-profit organization providing food to the hungry in our community. You may bring non-perishable food items to the Winn Room and drop them off between 10:30 and noon on the 19th.

SUMMARY:Port Special Board Meeting on Central Embarcadero Redevelopment
DESCRIPTION:Figure 10 from https://pantheonstorage.blob.core.windows.net/waterfront-development/20211229-1HWY1-Seaport-San-Diego-Project-Description.pdf. Project Land-Side and Water-Side Uses \n\nAs part of ongoing public outreach efforts for the potential redevelopment of the Central Embarcadero\, the Port of San Diego invites the public to an upcoming special meeting at which the Board of Port Commissioners will further discuss\, receive\, and listen to public and stakeholder feedback regarding 1HWY1’s proposed Seaport San Diego project. \nThe special Board meeting is scheduled for 12 pm on Thursday\, July 21\, 2022\, and will take place in the Boardroom at the Port Administration Building at 3165 Pacific Highway in San Diego. The agenda\, along with information on how the public can participate in the meeting\, will be published here this week. \nThe Board of Port Commissioners selected the 1HWY1 development team after a competitive process in 2016. Since then\, 1HWY1 has been refining its proposed project in response to Board\, Port staff\, and stakeholder feedback\, due diligence findings\, and input from prospective partners. 1HWY1 is proposing a mixed-use development program that includes parks\, open spaces and plazas\, piers\, walkways\, beaches\, nature trails\, shared streets\, and public rooftop; hotels at various service levels and price points; an event center; a “Blue Tech Innovation Center” block made up of an aquarium\, blue tech office space\, and an observation tower; fish processing plant; parks\, restaurants\, retail\, and more. \nOn Tuesday\, March 8\, 2022\, during the Board of Port Commissioners’ regular monthly meeting\, Port staff and 1HWY1 presented a draft preliminary Seaport San Diego project description to the Board and the public. Port staff collected feedback from the Board\, the public\, and stakeholders and has worked with 1HWY1 on changes to the project description. As part of the July 21 Special Board Meeting\, Port staff and the 1HWY1 team will be presenting an updated draft preliminary project description to the Board for further feedback and direction to Port staff. The public and stakeholders may also provide comments on the project description at this time. \nThe Central Embarcadero is a prime site on the San Diego Bay waterfront and includes Seaport Village and surrounding areas between the Manchester Grand Hyatt and USS Midway. There are many steps to go with 1HWY1 before the Seaport San Diego project can move on to the construction phase\, including various future Board actions and approvals over the next several years related to items such as environmental review\, financing\, and leasing. \nThe Port appreciates the public’s interest and engagement as the due diligence\, design\, and the entitlement and permitting process for the proposed Seaport San Diego project continues. \nFor more information and to sign up to receive updates\, go to portofsandiego.org/centralembarcadero.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host an annual Membership Meeting at the Coronado Public Library Winn Room on Friday April 22 from 5:30 until 7 pm. This is an important meeting for the Friends of the Library as a vote will be held among the membership in attendance to approve the slate of officers for the Friends’ Board. Proposed Bylaws changes also need to be approved\, making changes to membership levels and life memberships. Approximately one-half hour of business should be part of the membership meeting business. \nCollectible books will be for sale after the meeting\, and a raffle will also be held. The Membership meeting precedes the Saturday Book Sale which will be held for one day only on April 23\, from 9 am until 4 pm. The Book Sale location will be held on the grounds outside the Winn Room adjacent to the Coronado Library. The usual types of items will be for sale: books of all types including non-fiction and text-books\, children’s books\, art books\, best-sellers and mysteries\, collectible books\, audio-books\, DVDs\, and various gift items. \nThe change to a one-day sale is being caused by several reasons. Donations of books have not been accepted recently due to Covid\, so the inventory is lower. At the same time the increasing costs of renting tents\, tables\, and other equipment associated with conducting the multi-day book-sale has reduced the income that is raised to help support the Coronado Library. Thus\, setting up at Spreckels Park with the usual rented equipment for three days was not deemed the best way to achieve the Friends’ fundraising goals. \nThe Friends of the Coronado Public Library was formed in 1970 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization to support the Coronado Library and its various activities. This includes a host of public programs\, children’s and teen activities\, concerts\, art\, and certain collections. \n  \n  \n  \n
