SUMMARY:Democratic Club General Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next general membership meeting of the Coronado Democratic Club will be held on Saturday\, November 19th\, in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library. Doors open at 10:30 am and the meeting will begin at 11 am. \nLocal resident Kevin Ashley will give a brief overview of the early history of the African American community in Coronado\, covering the period from 1885 until World War II. Kevin spent the past several years researching the nearly forgotten history of Coronado’s pioneering African American community. He previously shared some of this research on his blog\, The Coronado Black History Project. Kevin is currently collaborating with the Coronado Historical Association\, the San Diego History Center\, and a granddaughter of former Coronado resident Cynthia Hudgins to publish Cynthia Hudgins’ remarkable memoir The Other Side of the Fence: Life on Both Sides of the Color Line. The book is scheduled for release in February of 2023 to coincide with Black History Month. \nIn the spirit of the holiday season\, we will also be accepting donations at the meeting for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank\, a non-profit organization providing food to the hungry in our community. You may bring non-perishable food items to the Winn Room and drop them off between 10:30 and noon on the 19th.

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Firekeeper's Daughter" by Angeline Boulley
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering. Registration is not required. \n \nFor our September meeting\, we will discuss the 2022 Printz Medal winner Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley\, a groundbreaking young adult thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community. \nAbout Firekeeper’s Daughter:  \nEighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in\, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college\, but when family tragedy strikes\, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie\, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. \nYet even as Daunis falls for Jamie\, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder\, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. \nReluctantly\, Daunis agrees to go undercover\, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined\, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time\, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. \nNow\, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing\, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community\, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: The Mist by Stephen King
DESCRIPTION:Spoilers Book Club\nThe Spoilers Book Club reads books that are turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \nEvent Details\n\nIn the wake of a summer storm\, terror descends…David Drayton\, his son Billy\, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there\, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves\, a religious zealot\, Mrs. Carmody\, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly\, staying in the store may prove fatal\, and the Draytons\, along with store employee Ollie Weeks\, Amanda Dumfries\, Irene Reppler\, and Dan Miller\, attempt to make their escape. But what’s out there may be worse than what they left behind. \nThis exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine. \nThe Mist (Rated R)\n2007\n2h 6m

SUMMARY:Christ Church Coronado Election Eve Service
DESCRIPTION:The peace and justice committee of Christ Church Coronado is sponsoring an election eve prayer service at 6 p.m. November 4 at Christ Episcopal Church\, on the corner of Ninth Street and C Avenue. In this contentious political time\, let us gather to pray for peace\, calm hearts and wise decisions. The service will be a contemplative service with the intention of promoting healing of the divisiveness in our community and our country. The service is open to all. Please join us as we pray for unity and for safe and fair elections; asking for God’s help and guidance as we enter a decisive day. \nThe peace and justice committee of Christ Church was formed in September 2020. Through education\, advocacy and action\, our mission is for our church to be a bridge of love to the community and beyond as we bring people together to make systemic changes and heal the deep divisions that exist in our society. In 2020\, we facilitated antiracism training and conducted voter education\, organized prayer vigils for safe elections and introduced civil discourse materials to the congregation. Since then\, we have continued these efforts and worked toward reducing homelessness\, ending the environmental crisis associated with the beach pollution\, and protecting the needs and rights of LGBTQ+ students. \nGraphic: The Coronado Times / canva
