DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Black History Month\, the Coronado Historical Association and the San Diego History Center invite you to the book launch of Cynthia Hudgins’s memoir\, The Other Side of the Fence. This compelling and important work chronicles the life of Cynthia Hudgins\, a woman who grew up in Coronado in the 1920s and 1930s and was raised there by her formerly enslaved grandparents\, Amos and Annie Hudgins. Claire Fishback\, an author and Cynthia’s granddaughter\, has worked diligently to transcribe Cynthia’s manuscript that was left behind after her passing at the age of 93 in 2015. Kevin Ashley\, who publishes the Coronado Black History Project blog was instrumental in bringing Cynthia’s story to the public’s attention. Both will attend the launch to share the background and process of publishing Cynthia’s memoir. \nThis event is free to attend\, but RSVP is required. RSVP at this website. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture in the Wine and Lecture series: WARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History. \nWARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History by Boat Unit veterans James Gray and Phil Garn is the first book about “The Silent Ones\,” now known as Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC). The book is profusely illustrated with many never-published photos\, documents\, insignia\, and charts as well as dozens of veteran interviews. The book tells the story of Naval Special Warfare Boat Units — from the Boat Support Units of the 1960s prowling the coast of North Vietnam and the waterways of the Mekong Delta to today’s Special Boat Teams in action around the world — with some background on maritime special operations since Colonial times. The book is published by the Combatant Craft Crewman Association\, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and honoring our veterans. \nMember ($15.00 each)\nNon-Member ($18.00 each) \nImportant Registration Information: Attendance is restricted to fully vaccinated persons with a booster shot. Gray is a retired Master Chief Petty Officer (SWCC) who served from 1969 to 1999 primarily in Naval Special Warfare commands from Boat Support Unit 1 to Special Boat Squadron 1 to Special Boat Unit 12 with combat deployments to Vietnam with MST-2 and the Persian Gulf as a Petty Officer in Charge of a 65 foot Sea Specter. He is a co-founder and contributor of the WARBOATS and PTF Nasty websites. He is the founder\, first President and current Historian of the Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). A longtime Naval historian\, he has written numerous articles ranging from “Ethos” to “On Target” as well as co-author of WARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History. \n \nPhil G. Garn served in Special Boat Units 12 and 13 as an officer in charge of Sea Fox and Sea Specter craft\, division officer\, reserve operations officer and officer in charge of the Tactical Operations Crew at NAB Coronado before starting a 26 year carrier in Federal law enforcement with the US Postal Inspection Service. He is a co-founder\, former Secretary and current Historian for Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). With a longtime interest in Naval history and unconventional warfare\, he has published a number of articles on Naval Special Warfare subjects and was co-author of WARBOATS. \n

On September 5\, 2024\, at 5:30 pm CHA will be hosting preservationist Maria Curry to talk about preservation efforts in Tijuana.\n \nTijuana has been called “the house of all people” and the “most visited border city in the world” where new communities form every day because of intense migration. In this quickly growing city with its bustling neighborhoods of free trade\, older buildings from the modernist era become hard to preserve. These architectural gems are often abandoned and then become obsolete or torn down. Unfortunately\, urban development\, economic forces\, and ineffective laws prevent preservationists from protecting Tijuana’s significant past.  Its tiled arcades and historically significant landmarks are at risk. As an advocate for historic conservation\, a public official\, and an academic in historic preservation\, Maria Curry will discuss the challenges to safeguarding the splendor of Tijuana’s architectural gems and local memory of bygone days.\n \nMaria Curry is an expert in historic preservation at the Secretaria de Cultura de Baja California. DESCRIPTION:It is unclear if U.S. policy makers and military leaders fully realize that we have already been thrust into an artificial intelligence (AI) race with authoritarian powers. Join George Galdorisi as he discusses how his new book Algorithms of Armageddon examines this most pressing security issue. \nRegister to receive reminder emails only; registration does not guarantee seating for this event. Registration is not required. \n \n\nGeorge Galdorisi is Director of Strategic Assessments and Technical Futures for the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific. Prior to joining NIWC Pacific\, he completed a thirty-year career as a naval aviator\, culminating in 14 years of consecutive experience as executive officer\, commanding officer\, commodore\, and chief of staff. \nDuring his career as a naval aviator he completed an array of operational assignments in all five Navy fleets. After completing a tour as Test Director in the LAMPS Mk III helicopter Program Office\, he was one of a small cadre of officers who stood up the Navy’s first LAMPS Mk III squadron\, HSL-41. His operational assignments culminated in commanding officer tours of HSL-43\, the Navy’s first operational LAMPS Mk III squadron\, HSL-41\, the LAMPS Mk III Fleet Replacement Squadron\, USS Cleveland (LPD-7)\, and Amphibious Squadron Seven. His last operational assignment spanned five years as Chief of Staff for Cruiser-Destroyer Group Three\, during which he made combat deployments to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf embarked in the USS Carl Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln. During this final tour he also led the U.S. Delegation for military-to-military consultations with the Chinese Navy. \nHe began his writing career in 1978 with an article in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings. He has written fourteen books\, including the New York Times best seller\, Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor\, the novelization of the Bandito Brothers/Relativity Media film and The Kissing Sailor\, which proved the identity of the two principals in Alfred Eisenstaedt’s famous photograph. His reboot of the best-selling Tom Clancy’s Op-Center Series includes three consecutive the New York Times best sellers\, Out of the Ashes\, Into the Fire and Scorched Earth. His most recent fiction project is a new series of Rick Holden thrillers published by Braveship Books (The Coronado Conspiracy\, For Duty and Honor and Fire and Ice). His most recent non-fiction project is AI at War How Big Data\, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Are Changing Naval Warfare. Additionally\, he has published more than four hundred articles in professional journals and national newspapers. \nHe has received a number of national and international writing awards\, including: the Navy League of the United States Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement\, the U.S. Naval Institute General Prize Essay Contest\, the Surface Navy Association Literary Award\, the Navy League of Australia’s Annual Essay Competition\, the Naval Helicopter Historical Association Literary Award\, and the Military Writers Society of America Silver Medal Award\, among others. \nHe is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and holds a Masters Degree in Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Masters Degree in International Relations from the University of San Diego. He graduated from both the Naval War College’s College of Command and Staff and the College of Naval Warfare\, and in 1994 he received the Naval War College’s Admiral John Hayward Award for Academic Achievement. Additionally\, he is a graduate of MIT Sloan School’s Program for Senior Executives.

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the September Wine & Lecture on Thursday\, September 19\, 2024\, at 5:30 p.m.   \nEighty-two years ago\, Howard “Skippy” Smith founded the nation’s first black-owned and managed defense production plant in San Diego. Author Agin Shaheed will discuss the life of this skydiver turned national-recognized entrepreneur. \nBorn in Alabama in 1913\, “Skippy” Smith moved to Los Angeles California during the Great Depression with little to nothing in his pocket with hopes of becoming a pilot. By 1939\, he had become a renowned skydiver with his partner Mac “Skip” Gravelly. The duo became well known for the difficult and dangerous free fall jumps followed by delayed parachute openings at air shows.  \nSmith would eventually move to San Diego and become the first African American hired by defense contractor Standard Parachute to test\, pack\, and inspect parachutes manufactured for WWII. Around the same time\, comedian Jack Benny’s partner\, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson\, was looking for ways he could contribute to the war effort and was introduced to Smith. With Anderson’s financial backing\, Smith’s Pacific Parachute Company opened on 8th Street in San Diego in March 1942. Pacific Parachute earned recognition from Time Magazine as the “Top Black Owned Business in the United States” in 1943. Smith also notably employed one of the few integrated workforces in San Diego at that time.   \nAgin Shaheed\, a native Californian\, served in the US Navy from 1968-1972. He has authored two books in his “unsung hero” series. First\, Charles C. Flint\, The Man\, and His Times\, chronicles the life of one of Los Angeles’ most remarkable Black citizens. He also recently released the book\, A Musical Blueprint\, Ernie Freeman\, The Man\, and His Times which recounts the life of the Grammy-winning arranger\, composer\, conductor\, producer\, director\, bandleader\, orchestra leader\, and voice coach. DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t love a compelling biography? Many Coronadans have read Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego and now the legacy continues with a new book\, The Sugar King of California: The Life of Claus Spreckels penned by the same author\, Sandra Bonura.  \n \nThis is a rags-to-riches story of a colorful and controversial immigrant and his role in the development of America’s sugar industry. He became one of the richest Americans in history and triumphed in an era rife with cronyism and corruption which ultimately transformed California’s agriculture\, industry\, and transportation. He wielded a clenched fist over Hawai‘i’s economy for nearly two decades after occupying a position of unrivaled power and political influence with the Hawaiian monarchy\, while also advancing major technology developments on the islands. Harshly criticized by his enemies for ruthless business tactics but loved by his employees\, he was unapologetic in his quest for wealth\, asserting “Spreckels’s success is California’s success.”  \n \nBut there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. Spreckels’ biography is one of triumph and tragedy\, a portrait of a family torn apart by money\, jealousy\, and ego with lessons for us all. \n\nDr. Sandra Bonura\, who has been praised for her ability to breathe life into forgotten histories\, is a native San Diegan who spent her childhood in Coronado. Bonura has worked with the Coronado Historical Association as a docent and served as the guest curator for its exhibit John D. Spreckels: The Man\, The Legacy.   \nRegister today for the October 17 lecture to hear more about the book and the primary sources she utilized to gain perspective on the “Sugar King.” Dr. Bonura is known for her meticulous research and vivid storytelling.
