SUMMARY:Chicano Artists: A History through Today
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) by joining the Library for a lecture celebrating Chicano art and artists. Julia Fister will lead attendees through a brief look at the history of Mexico\, which helps to explain how the movement began and still continues to this day. She will take a look at the precursors to the modern Chicano artists\, and then at the modern Chicano artists in San Diego’s Chicano Park and Los Angeles. \nThis program is presented by San Diego Oasis. \n\nJulia Fister\, a St. Louis\, Missouri native\, graduated from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and from Fontbonne University in St. Louis with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. After an early career in investment banking and several years as a graphic designer\, she arrived at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) as a volunteer after completing a Master’s Degree in Art History at San Diego State University. Fister was soon hired by OMA to create and direct an education program for 5th graders\, later titled ArtQuest\, and within six years\, the program grew to serve over 7\,000 students from Oceanside and the surrounding areas. Moving into the role of Director of Education at OMA\, Fister oversaw ArtQuest and created a robust Education Department\, serving both children and adults. During her 6 1/2 year tenure\, she created a summer camp program\, increased the Free Family Art Day attendance to over 5\,000 family members a year from 600\, revamped the museum’s docent program\, increased the Artist Alliance from 15% to 25% of membership\, created OMA’s first on-site art classroom\, and was instrumental in developing and creating OMA’s first international traveling exhibition. Following OMA\, Fister worked as an education specialist for the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad\, where she revamped and created new educational programming for the museum.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Search for a North Island Plane
DESCRIPTION:Local award-winning historian and preservationist Alexander D. Bevil will use historic photographs and maps to reveal a forgotten chapter in North Island’s early military history: the search for missing pilot 1st Lieutenant Charles L. Webber\, and his passenger\, Assistant Chief of Cavalry Lt. Colonel Frances C. Marshall. The search\, which lasted from December 7\, 1922 to February 1923\, was the largest and longest combined air and ground search in American military history during peacetime. The presentation will also focus on the leadership role Rockwell Field’s pilots and observers played flying outdated aircraft over forbidding mountain and desert terrain from San Diego to Tucson. It will also discuss the role these men played in recovering Webber and Marshall’s remains\, and the erection of the first of two monuments in their memory at the crash site. Two of these\, base commander Major Henry “Hap” Arnold\, and Texas-based pilot Major Theodore C. Macaulay\, would later play key command roles during World War II. After the war\, Major Macaulay would serve as an active and well-respected member of the Coronado Civic Club and a local bank branch manager. \nA graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in History\, Alexander D. Bevil is an award-winning local historian. Before\, during\, and after his 20-year tenure as a California State Parks historian\, he worked diligently trying to save historic resources both in and outside the California State Parks system. Based in San Diego\, he has evaluated numerous historic resources in California State Parks throughout southern and central California ranging from stone-built mountain cabins to “lost” towns. His favorite projects\, however\, involved investigating historic military resources\, especially “lost” aircraft crash sites.

SUMMARY:US Attack Aviation: From the Red Baron to TOPGUN
DESCRIPTION:Attack aviation is intense and dangerous. It necessitates the direct engagement of ground targets at low altitude. Attack aircraft are usually fighters or fighter-sized aircraft\, with one or two engines\, and one or two crew. For this event\, R. G. Head (Brig. Gen.\, Ret.) will present his new book US Attack Aviation: Air Force and Navy Light Attack: 1916 to the Present. This is a story about flying. It is told by naval aviators\, Air Force fighter pilots\, and the men who built the airplanes the pilots flew. \nAuthor R. G. Head (Brig. Gen.\, Ret.) has extensive experience in combat (325 missions\, DFC\, Silver Star) and an in-depth understanding of doctrine (taught future pilots at the Air Force Academy) and gained first-person exposure to the policy and engineering aspects of the aircraft procurement process while serving at the Pentagon and later as a private consultant working in collaboration with the US Navy. His work provides an overview history of American attack aviation from its inception to present\, including both the US Navy and Air Force. The pillars of the narrative are several case studies that characterize the evolution of technology and tactics over time: SBD Dauntless\, AD Skyraider\, A-4 Skyhawk\, A-7 Corsair II\, A-10 Thunderbolt II\, and F/A-18 Hornet. Each of the cases contains first-person accounts that include a description of the aircraft’s origin\, competitive procurement\, major attack features\, and combat employment. Head (Brig. During Christmastime\, Bill can be found at Balboa Park’s Spreckels Organ Pavillion as Santa Claus. He played baseball for the legendary House of David baseball team as “Baseball Santa” and also played over-the-line for “Real Santas United to End Childhood Obesity.” His scale-model reproduction of Lane Field is on display at Petco Park. Billy Swank was a “morning-glory.” He couldn’t hit the curveball…and never thought he’d become Santa Claus as an old man.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science: Solstice Sea Star Search
DESCRIPTION:Take part in a citizen science opportunity to search for sea stars! The California Academy of Sciences and the Nature Conservancy are requesting your help finding and reporting sea stars along the California coast during December 20-23. Join our environmental librarian as we search for sea stars in the tide pools and upload our observations into iNaturalist to share our data with researchers. Library staff can assist you with setting up and using iNaturalist throughout the event. \nWhere? We will be at the tidepools in the rocks behind/in front of the Hotel del Coronado. \nWhat were looking for? Sea stars\, also known as starfish or bat stars. Any sea star observations are important for researchers\, but they are particularly looking for observations of Sunflower Stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides). If you find any of these species\, please additionally email your iNaturalist sighting to solsticeseastarsearch@gmail.com. \nWhy the solstice? The best time to observe tide pools is during low tide. The winter and summer solstices typically coincide with some of the lowest tides in the year\, which can make them a great time for tide pooling! \nHow do we report observations? We will be using iNaturalist\, a free citizen science app used to connect people to nature and advance biodiversity science and conservation. Library staff can assist you with setting up and using iNaturalist throughout the event. Please bring your smart device. \nTeen volunteers can get community service credit for participating in this event. Contact tdavies@coronado.ca.us for verification.

SUMMARY:Emerald Keepers Eco-Lecture: Solar Electricity
DESCRIPTION:Learn about putting solar panels on your home!\nHave you ever wished you could have locked in that 1.75% 30 year morgage rate or lamented the price of gas today? Inflation is hurting our wallets. Product sizes are shrinking and prices are rising. It costs close to $100 to fill a 20 gallon gas tank. Natural gas and electric rates are at an all time high. SDG&E recently announced that rates went up even more beginning January 1. \nFortunately\, there is one way to reverse the effects of inflation and help the environment – solar energy.  It is possible to lock in electricity rates that SDG&E charged in 2012. If you’ve ever wondered how solar could benefit you but wanted more information\, don’t miss this informative workshop. \nPlease bring your SDG&E bill and reusable water bottle/coffee cup.
