DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re fascinated by physics\, architecture\, or infrastructure\, join us to uncover the science and engineering behind building bridges that last. \n \n  \nAbout the Speaker:  \nPrior to coming to UC San Diego\, Palermo was a professor in structural Engineering at the University of Canterbury\, Christchurch\, New Zealand\, which he joined in 2009. He started his career as a Faculty in 2005 as Assistant Professor (tenured) at Politecnico di Milano\, Department of Structural Engineering. \nPalermo has three patents\, over 400 publications in international journals and conference proceedings. Palermo is a member of several associations and is a Fellow of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE)\, Engineering New Zealand\, the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE). He served as President of the Concrete NZ Learned Society in 2021-2022 and New Zealand Head Delegate of the fib (Federation International du Beton) 2015-2023. Palermo is a passionate teacher and received several awards at the University of Canterbury. In 2021 Palermo was awarded as the “Most Influential International Accelerated Bridge Construction Person of the Year Outside U.S.” in Academia at the 2021 Accelerated Bridge Construction Conference in Miami.

SUMMARY:2025 Preservation Symposium: Historic Places with Elsa Sevilla
DESCRIPTION:May is National Preservation Month\, and Coronado is joining communities nationwide in celebrating our unique heritage! We’re fortunate to have so many meaningful historic places\, and we’ll be highlighting them throughout the month. Our celebrations include a City Council Proclamation\, the presentation of plaques to recently designated historic homes\, and the beloved Historic Home Tour on Mother’s Day\, May 11. \nThe celebrations will culminate in the annual Preservation Symposium on Thursday\, May 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The program will include a reception starting at 5:30 pm followed by the presentations at 6 pm. \nJoin Coronado MainStreet\, the Historical Association\, and the City of Coronado for the Preservation Symposium sponsored by the Coronado Community Foundation as we champion preservation in our community. This year’s speakers include a City Planner who will outline the City’s approach to historic preservation\, as well as keynote speaker Elsa Sevilla\, host of KPBS’s Historic Places. Elsa will share how she approaches her work incorporating history into entertaining media. In the latest from the series\, Elsa steps inside the legendary Hotel del Coronado\, a National Historic Monument\, as it undergoes a stunning transformation. But in the spring of 1975\, World War II widow and retired librarian Ruth Quinn was murdered\, execution-style\, in her cottage. Her death sent a shock wave through the community. The granddaughter of Jujubes and Jujyfruits creator Henry Heide\, Ruth was found fully clothed with her shoes on\, in her bed\, dead from two gunshot wounds. To this day\, her murder has never been solved\, but whispers about her brother\, her son\, and even a local petty thief still swirl. \nThe Coronado Historical Association is proud to host Coronado author Taylor Baldwin Kiland as she sifts through the dirt for the facts about Ruth’s life and her untimely end fifty years ago.
