The Sun & Sea Festival hosts the city’s famous sandcastles with multi-award-winning professional sand carver teams competing for top prizes alongside a kids’ sandcastle competition named Sandcastle Smashdown on Saturday\, July 18. This family-friendly free event also features a fun-filled street festival and live entertainment all day. \nThe festivities kick-off Friday night with the Sun & Sea Ball at Mike Hess Brewing in IB. \nFRIDAY\, JULY 17\n\n8 am to Sunset – Mega Castle construction\, Pier Plaza\n6 p.m. to 11 p.m. – Back to the 70s Sun & Sea Ball at Mike Hess Brewing 805 Ocean Ln\, (at Seacoast Drive). Free admission\, all ages welcome. DJ music\, craft brews\, and raffle prizes. A percentage of proceeds will be donated to the Sun and Sea Festival\, a not-for-profit assn.\n\nSATURDAY\, JULY 18\nSandcastles at Portwood Pier Plaza \n\n8 a.m. to sunset – Monument Castle\n8 a.m. – Master Sandcastle Competition Starts (Awards at 4 p.m.)\n10 a.m. – Kids Sandcastle Contest called Sandcastle Showdown starts (Awards at Noon)\n\nStreet Festival – Along Seacoast Drive \n\n10 a.m. to 5 p.m.– Street Festival – A great selection of food\, refreshments and crafts. The Coronado Public Library\, in collaboration with the Silver Strand Youth Center\, will be hosting exciting events for all ages every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. all summer long. Kids\, teens\, and adults can sign up for our Summer Reading Program at these events\, log their reads\, and pick up their prizes while enjoying a different fun-filled event each week. These events will take place outside\, so pack your sunscreen and a blanket to sit on and enjoy. Please note that public restrooms are not available at this location. \nThis program is made possible thanks to the support of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library and the City of Coronado. \n\nOn Wednesday\, July 22\, get ready to walk on the wild side as Wild Wonders presents Our Big Backyard. This program focuses on native North American animals\, featuring many from our own beautiful country\, with an “at home” conservation theme. You’ll learn about our animal friends and some up close animal encounters.
