From everyday objects that have become treasured to extraordinary objects that are one-of-a-kind\, CHA preserves the collection for future generations while sharing with them with current ones. The luncheon provides valuable support for CHA and the program includes opportunities to give to high-priority projects to ensure the continued protection of the collection. We invite you to join us for a special opening reception of the CHA’s latest exhibit\, A View from the Periscope\, followed by a panel discussion and sharing of sea stories from local submariners. The program will include remarks from special guest Captain Kenneth Douglas\, Commander\, Submarine Squadron Eleven\, who will give a brief update on current Naval submarine operations. \nDoors open for the reception at 5:15 pm and will include wine and refreshments provided by the Naval Submarine League. Program to follow starting at 6:00 pm. \nFREE – Reservations required. If you have any questions please email info@coronadohistory.org or call 619-435-7242. \nAbout the Speakers: \nCaptain Sam Ward\, USN (Ret.) \nCaptain Ward grew up in Coronado\, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960 and completed his military service in 1987. He served in several submarines\, including USS Halibut (SSGN 587); USS Skate (SSN 578)\, and USS Hammerhead (SSN 663).  He commanded USS Archerfish (SSN 678)\, Submarine Development Squadron 12\, and Naval Submarine School. Captain Ward was awarded the Legion of Merit (6)\, the Meritorious Service Medal (2)\, and several lessor awards. He has lived in Coronado since 1999. He attends Christ Church in Coronado and is a member of the Naval Submarine League. \nCaptain Jeffrey Fischbeck\, USN (Ret.) \nRetired Navy Captain Jeff Fischbeck\, a 1971 graduate of Colgate University\, served his thirty-year naval career onboard five nuclear submarines\, including USS GREENLING (SSN 614)\, USS HENRY CLAY (SSBN 625)\, USS LAPON (SSN 661)\, and USS POGY (SSN 647). He commanded USS LA JOLLA (SSN 701)\, homeported in San Diego from 1988 to 1991. His other San Diego tours included Deputy Submarine Squadron Commander (1991-1992) and Director of the Navy’s Arctic Submarine Laboratory (1998-2002).  Shore tours included command of the NROTC at Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh\, and submarine billets in Naples\, Italy\, and Brussels\, Belgium.  Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal\, Legion of Merit\, Meritorious Service Medal\, among other personal and unit awards.  After retiring from the Navy\, he worked as a senior consultant for the Department of Homeland Security\, and served as President of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the Naval Submarine League and the Optimist Club of Point Loma. \nCaptain Charles MacVean\, USN (Ret.)\, Ph.D. \nBorn and raised in Ridgewood\, New Jersey\, MacVean received his commission through the NROTC Program at Dartmouth College.  Following assignment to the USS FORREST SHERMAN (DD-931)\, the Navy sent him to Cornell University where he earned a Ph.D. in Nuclear Science and Engineering.  He entered the Navy Nuclear Power Program.  MacVean’s sixteen years of sea duty included 4.5 years underwater and qualification in submarines on the USS TINOSA (SSN-606)\, where he was the Navigator.  Following TINOSA\, he was the Navigator on USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (SSBN-598).  After a shore tour with the Secretary of Defense\, he was the commissioning Executive Officer on USS PARCHE (SSN-683).  MacVean commanded SEAWOLF (SSN-575) during the midst of the Cold War and then commanded SUBMARINE DEVELOPMENT GROUP ONE here in San Diego.  Captain MacVean was awarded two Distinguished Service Medals and a Legion of Merit among other awards.  After the Navy\, he provided executive-level leadership for two companies providing advanced technology hardware and software to the Navy and Marine Corps.  He also served on the Board of Trustees for the San Diego Maritime Museum and the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation\, while remaining active in the Naval Submarine League. \nCaptain Bill Green\, USN (Ret.) \nCaptain William Green entered the Navy after completing NROTC through the University of Southern California in 1952. The culmination of Captain Green’s submarine duty was as commander of the USS Tunny (APSS-282)\, which was specially configured to conduct unconventional warfare in Vietnam. While in command\, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V and two Navy Commendation Medals with Combat V. Green\, an intelligence sub-specialist\, also served in many intelligence assignments including assistant naval attaché in Moscow\, USSR (1969-1971)\, defense attaché in Rome\, Italy (1976-1979)\, and was an analyst at the National Security Agency. He retired from the Navy in 1983. \nCaptain Kenneth Douglas\, USN \nCaptain Douglas hails from Long Island\, NY and enlisted in the Navy in 1993.  Following Nuclear Power training\, he was selected for an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.  He graduated with merit in 1998 with a major in Aerospace Engineering. His afloat tours include the submarines USS MICHIGAN\, USS BREMERTON\, USS CHEYENNE and Executive Officer of USS ASHEVILLE.  He commanded USS PASADENA (SSN 752) from July 2015 until October 2017 where the ship was awarded the Submarine Squadron 11 Battle Efficiency award.  He has completed six strategic deterrent patrols as well as several deployments to the Western Pacific and South America. His assignments ashore have included an instructor tour at Tactical Training Group Pacific\, Junior Board Member on the US Fleet Forces Command Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board\, Special Assistant to the Commander of United States Strategic Command\, Deputy Commander of Submarine Squadron ELEVEN and the Submarine Commanding Officer and Post-Commanding Officer detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington\, TN. CAPT Douglas is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Joint Forces Staff College.  He holds a M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Columbia University. His personnel awards include the Legion of Merit\, Defense Meritorious Service Medal\, Meritorious Service Medal\, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal\, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal\, and various campaign and unit awards.

SUMMARY:Chicano Artists: A History through Today
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) by joining the Library for a lecture celebrating Chicano art and artists. Julia Fister will lead attendees through a brief look at the history of Mexico\, which helps to explain how the movement began and still continues to this day. She will take a look at the precursors to the modern Chicano artists\, and then at the modern Chicano artists in San Diego’s Chicano Park and Los Angeles. \nThis program is presented by San Diego Oasis. \n\nJulia Fister\, a St. Louis\, Missouri native\, graduated from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and from Fontbonne University in St. Louis with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. After an early career in investment banking and several years as a graphic designer\, she arrived at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) as a volunteer after completing a Master’s Degree in Art History at San Diego State University. Fister was soon hired by OMA to create and direct an education program for 5th graders\, later titled ArtQuest\, and within six years\, the program grew to serve over 7\,000 students from Oceanside and the surrounding areas. Moving into the role of Director of Education at OMA\, Fister oversaw ArtQuest and created a robust Education Department\, serving both children and adults. During her 6 1/2 year tenure\, she created a summer camp program\, increased the Free Family Art Day attendance to over 5\,000 family members a year from 600\, revamped the museum’s docent program\, increased the Artist Alliance from 15% to 25% of membership\, created OMA’s first on-site art classroom\, and was instrumental in developing and creating OMA’s first international traveling exhibition. Following OMA\, Fister worked as an education specialist for the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad\, where she revamped and created new educational programming for the museum.

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to join us for the following lecture in the Wine & Lecture series\, The Service Knows and Will Remember: The Airplane Crash Site Memorial on Japacha Ridge. Local award-winning historian and preservationist Alexander D. Bevil will use historic photographs and maps to reveal a forgotten chapter in North Island’s early military history: the search for missing pilot 1st Lieutenant Charles L. Webber\, and his passenger\, Assistant Chief of Cavalry Lt. Colonel Frances C. Marshall. The search lasted from December 7\, 1922\, to February 1923 and was the most extensive and longest combined air and ground search in American military history during peacetime. \nThe presentation will also focus on the leadership role Rockwell Field’s pilots and observers played in flying outdated aircraft over forbidding mountain and desert terrain from San Diego to Tucson\, Arizona. It will also discuss the role these men played in recovering Webber and Marshall’s remains and the erection of the first of two monuments in their memory at the crash site. Two of these pilots\, base commander Major Henry “Hap” Arnold\, and Texas-based pilot Major Theodore C. Macaulay would later play key command roles during World War II. After the war\, Major Macaulay would serve as an active and well-respected member of the Coronado Civic Club and a local branch bank manager. \nReception at 5:30 pm\, followed by 6:00 pm lecture. Bevil is an award-winning local historian. Based in San Diego\, he has evaluated numerous historic resources in California State Parks throughout southern and central California. Ranging from stone-built mountain cabins to “lost” towns\, his favorite projects\, however\, involved investigating historic military resources: especially “lost” aircraft crash sites. In addition to explaining the memorial’s historical significance\, Mr. Bevil seeks to use his presentation to garner support for his upcoming nomination of the crash site and its memorial to the National Register of Historic Places in time for the former’s 100th anniversary this December 7th. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join CHA for a free informational forum about the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan. In 2003\, the City of Coronado and community members developed the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan to “provide a policy and regulatory bridge between the city of Coronado General Plan and individual\, project-level development.” The City Council approved the Specific Plan in 2004 after multiple community workshops and citizen involvement and have made amendments to the plan through 2014. According to Chapter VI\, the Commercial Zone Design Criteria\, “the purpose of the design criteria is to protect the special identity of the commercial areas of Coronado\,” in particular\, the special “village” character. \nThe forum will be led by Phil Monroe and other members of the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan Committee who will discuss the development and history of the plan. \n

Join us as we invite Nikki Kreibich\, Realtor Valuation Expert\, and Richard Thomas Sweeney\, author\, to provide an interesting look at the history of the Severin Grossmont Hills neighborhood in La Mesa. You will learn about Coronado and La Mesa’s architectural ties and about the Severin family’s role in mid-century residential design.   \nReception at 5:30 pm\, followed by 6:00 pm lecture.
