Aligned with this effort\, the Coronado Historical Association in partnership with the Coronado Arts Commission\, invites you to join us for a free lecture to learn about the future of historic buildings in Tijuana. On September 5\, 2024\, at 5:30 pm CHA will be hosting preservationist Maria Curry to talk about preservation efforts in Tijuana.\n \nTijuana has been called “the house of all people” and the “most visited border city in the world” where new communities form every day because of intense migration. In this quickly growing city with its bustling neighborhoods of free trade\, older buildings from the modernist era become hard to preserve. These architectural gems are often abandoned and then become obsolete or torn down. Unfortunately\, urban development\, economic forces\, and ineffective laws prevent preservationists from protecting Tijuana’s significant past.  Its tiled arcades and historically significant landmarks are at risk. As an advocate for historic conservation\, a public official\, and an academic in historic preservation\, Maria Curry will discuss the challenges to safeguarding the splendor of Tijuana’s architectural gems and local memory of bygone days.\n \nMaria Curry is an expert in historic preservation at the Secretaria de Cultura de Baja California. She holds an architectural engineering degree\, a master’s degree in restoration of monuments\, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Historic Preservation from Cornell University.\n \nThis event is free and open to the public however capacity is limited so reservations are required. DESCRIPTION:After immigrating to America and becoming involved in the development of America’s sugar industry\, Claus Spreckels became one of the richest Americans in history. He triumphed in an era rife with cronyism and corruption and ultimately transformed California’s agriculture\, industry and transportation. But there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. \nLocal author Sandra Bonura gives us a rags to riches story of this colorful and controversial immigrant who started the legacy known in Coronado\, San Diego\, and beyond. Join Sandra Bonura on Friday\, August 30 at 1pm in the Winn Room as she discusses her newest book and all that went into writing this biography. \nAbout the Book \nClaus Spreckels (1828–1908) emigrated from his homeland of Germany to the United States with only seventy-five cents in his pocket\, built a sugar empire\, and became one of the richest Americans in history alongside John D. Rockefeller\, Warren Buffett\, and Bill Gates. Migrating to San Francisco after the gold rush\, Spreckels built the largest sugar beet factory of its kind in the United States. His sugar beet production in the Salinas Valley changed the focus of valley agriculture from dry to irrigated crops\, resulting in the vast modern agricultural-industrial economy in today’s “Salad Bowl of the World.” When Spreckels gave America its first sugar cube\, he became the “Sugar King.” \nThe indomitable Spreckels was a colorful and complicated character on both sides of the Pacific. A kingpin in the development of the Hawai‘i-California sugarcane industry\, he wielded a clenched fist over Hawai‘i’s economy for nearly two decades after occupying a position of unrivaled power and political influence with the Hawaiian monarchy\, while also advancing major technology developments on the islands. The Sugar King’s legacy continued as the Spreckels family developed large portions of California\, building and breaking monopolies in agriculture\, shipping\, railroading\, finance\, real estate\, horse breeding\, utilities\, streetcars\, and water infrastructure\, and building entire towns and cities from infrastructure to superstructure. \nIn The Sugar King of California Sandra E. Bonura tells the rags-to-riches story of Spreckels’s role in the developments of the sugarcane industry in the American West and across the Pacific\, triumphing in a milieu rife with cronyism and corruption and ultimately transforming California’s industry and labor. Harshly criticized by his enemies for ruthless business tactics but loved by his employees\, he was unapologetic in his quest for wealth\, asserting “Spreckels’s success is California’s success.” But there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. Spreckels’s biography is one of business triumph and tragedy\, a portrait of a family torn apart by money\, jealousy\, and ego. \nAbout the Author \nHistorian Dr. Sandra Bonura is a retired professor who is busy on her 2nd career resurrecting the forgotten stories of overlooked historical figures. She is a frequent storyteller and lecturer on the importance of using a multitude of primary sources to gain perspective on major historical events. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture in the Wine and Lecture series: WARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History. \nWARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History by Boat Unit veterans James Gray and Phil Garn is the first book about “The Silent Ones\,” now known as Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC). The book is profusely illustrated with many never-published photos\, documents\, insignia\, and charts as well as dozens of veteran interviews. The book tells the story of Naval Special Warfare Boat Units — from the Boat Support Units of the 1960s prowling the coast of North Vietnam and the waterways of the Mekong Delta to today’s Special Boat Teams in action around the world — with some background on maritime special operations since Colonial times. Gray is a retired Master Chief Petty Officer (SWCC) who served from 1969 to 1999 primarily in Naval Special Warfare commands from Boat Support Unit 1 to Special Boat Squadron 1 to Special Boat Unit 12 with combat deployments to Vietnam with MST-2 and the Persian Gulf as a Petty Officer in Charge of a 65 foot Sea Specter. He is a co-founder and contributor of the WARBOATS and PTF Nasty websites. He is the founder\, first President and current Historian of the Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). A longtime Naval historian\, he has written numerous articles ranging from “Ethos” to “On Target” as well as co-author of WARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History. \n \nPhil G. Garn served in Special Boat Units 12 and 13 as an officer in charge of Sea Fox and Sea Specter craft\, division officer\, reserve operations officer and officer in charge of the Tactical Operations Crew at NAB Coronado before starting a 26 year carrier in Federal law enforcement with the US Postal Inspection Service. He is a co-founder\, former Secretary and current Historian for Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). With a longtime interest in Naval history and unconventional warfare\, he has published a number of articles on Naval Special Warfare subjects and was co-author of WARBOATS. \n

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Black History Month\, the Coronado Historical Association and the San Diego History Center invite you to the book launch of Cynthia Hudgins’s memoir\, The Other Side of the Fence. This compelling and important work chronicles the life of Cynthia Hudgins\, a woman who grew up in Coronado in the 1920s and 1930s and was raised there by her formerly enslaved grandparents\, Amos and Annie Hudgins. Claire Fishback\, an author and Cynthia’s granddaughter\, has worked diligently to transcribe Cynthia’s manuscript that was left behind after her passing at the age of 93 in 2015. Kevin Ashley\, who publishes the Coronado Black History Project blog was instrumental in bringing Cynthia’s story to the public’s attention. Both will attend the launch to share the background and process of publishing Cynthia’s memoir. \nThis event is free to attend\, but RSVP is required. RSVP at this website.
