All students are welcome to attend and join the post-screening moderated discussion. \nThe 2025 The War That Shaped Our World CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues – To honor the 80th Anniversary of the end of WWI\, the 2025 CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues to present a slate of Hollywood film classics made during and/or about WWII on Sunday March 16 at 1PM in the Library’s Winn Room with an “open to the entire community” screening of Legendary Hollywood Director John Ford’s They Were Expendable starring Robert Montgomery\, John Wayne and Donna Reed. WWII themed screenings will continue through May. The complete Student Classic Series schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF Website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. All Student Classic screenings are free. \nIn October 1944\, General Douglas McArthur returned to the Philippines\, as he had promised\, after being evacuated to Australia in 1942. Less than a year later\, Japan surrendered\, ending the Second World War. Director John Ford’s 1945 They Were Expendable is based on a bestselling book of the same name recounting the heroic actions of Navy officers and sailors assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three during the disastrous fall of the Philippines in the wake of the December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Ford’s film is a fictionalized account of the exploits of Medal of Honor recipient John C. Bulkeley and the men of Squadron Three. Just before the fall of Corregidor\, it was LT Bulkeley and his crew who evacuated MacArthur and his family aboard PT 41\, a 77-foot motor torpedo boat\, and carried them over 600 miles of open ocean to Mindanao\, from where they were flown to Australia. As MacArthur put it\, “You have taken me out of the jaws of death. I shall never forget it.” \nMacArthur left behind more than 36\,000 Army\, Marine and Navy forces\, including the men of Squadron Three\, few of whom escaped the disastrous consequences of a military defeat that stunned our nation. The dogged resistance of those who remained delayed the Japanese advance. They bought\, with their lives and blood\, desperately needed time for the Pacific Fleet to rebuild and rearm to begin to take the fight to the enemy. More than 60\,000 Filipino and 15\,000 American prisoners of war suffered through the infamous 66-mile Bataan Death March. The film also honors The Angels of Bataan\, the 11 Navy nurses\, 67 Army nurses captured and imprisoned by the Japanese\, the largest group of American women ever captured and imprisoned in wartime. \nDirector John Ford (then Captain Ford USNR on active duty) crafted a movie\, with a screenplay by visionary Naval Aviator and Coronado legend\, Frank “Spig” Wead (CDR USN Ret.)\, that tells a gripping story of honor\, courage\, and commitment\, perhaps better than any other Navy themed film in Hollywood history. Ford’s unflinching dramatization of a disastrous military defeat examines the human and emotional costs of war and the impossibly difficult choices those who lead officers\, sailors and\, yes\, even nurses\, face in wartime. Starring Robert Montgomery\, John Wayne and Donna Reed\, this superb motion picture is a history lesson necessary and appropriate for all ages. DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association’s popular Wine & Lecture series continues Thursday\, February 20 at 5:30 pm with a special presentation from two USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum docents.  \nUS Navy veterans and long-time Midway docents Brian Butler and Steve Walker will present a dynamic visual journey titled The Midway Story. As the Midway comes off of its 20th-anniversary on the waterfront in 2024\, the presentation will highlight the Midway’s 47 years as an active duty US Navy ship\, as well as demonstrate how the museum earned the distinction of being one of San Diego’s pre-eminent tourist attractions. \nFirst opened in 2004\, the Midway has steadily grown its count of visitors as well as guest accolades. In 2024\, Midway welcomed its 20 millionth guest. With more than 26\,000 guest reviews\, Midway ranked #1 among 751 Things To Do in San Diego last year\, according to Trip Advisor\, a national travel assistance platform. The Museum was also ranked the fourth most popular museum of any type nationally in 2024.  \nAn even more primary reason for Midway’s acclaim is the patriotism\, skill\, and dedication of the more than 700 volunteers who donate more than 235\,000 hours annually. Within the volunteers\, the Docent team is considered the Midway’s “secret sauce” that makes the guest experience special. Many docents are US Navy veterans and their knowledge of how an aircraft carrier operates as well as their shared personal experiences are what guests say they remember and appreciate the most during their visit.  \n \nLate in 2024\, the Midway kicked off an ambitious new project – Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier. Davenport examines the urgent need for better civic education to preserve the republic\, highlighting the disconnect between young Americans and the foundational principles of self-government and freedom. Attendees will learn about this important issue and actionable solutions to bridge this civic knowledge gap at this talk. \n \n\nDavid Davenport is a research fellow emeritus at the Hoover Institution specializing in constitutional federalism\, civic education\, modern American conservatism\, and international law. During his career at Hoover\, he also served in administrative capacities as counselor to the director and the inaugural director of Hoover’s Washington\, DC\, program. Davenport is the former president of Pepperdine University (1985–2000). Under his leadership\, the university experienced significant growth in quality and reputation. He is the cofounder of Common Sense California and the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership. He also served on the board of California Forward\, a major bipartisan reform group\, and was a member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California Performance Review Commission. He is a former senior fellow of the Ashbrook Center\, where he worked on civic education projects. \nDavenport and Jeffrey Sikkenga have co-authored a new book on civic education in 2024\, A Republic If You Can Teach It: Fixing America’s Civic Education Crisis. With his colleague Gordon Lloyd\, Davenport co-authored Equality of Opportunity: A Century of Debate\, which was released in 2023. They also co-wrote How Public Policy Became War (2019)\, Rugged Individualism: Dead or Alive? (2017)\, The New Deal and Modern American Conservatism: A Defining Rivalry (2013); These books offer distinctive ways of understanding both historic and current debates between progressives and conservatives in the United States. \n\nA Republic If We Can Teach It: Fixing America‘s Civic Education Crisis is a call to action\, an effort to save our republic through better civic education. America faces a crisis in civic education that imperils the long-term health of the country. Too many Americans―especially young people―do not have the knowledge of history and principles necessary to sustain the republic. In what has become a vicious cycle\, young people are not learning about their country―its history and how it works―and they grow up disengaged and distrustful. Too many young people do not understand the principles of self-government on which America was founded. And they do not understand America’s history as the story of the struggle to live up to those principles of freedom articulated in documents like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Instead\, too many believe that America’s story is essentially one of oppression\, not freedom―injustice\, not hope. In the first half of the book\, authors Jeff Sikkenga and David Davenport diagnose the problem while proposing solutions in the second half. Truly\, America faces a civics crisis and action is needed now to reverse the trend.

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the September Wine & Lecture on Thursday\, September 19\, 2024\, at 5:30 p.m.   \nEighty-two years ago\, Howard “Skippy” Smith founded the nation’s first black-owned and managed defense production plant in San Diego. Author Agin Shaheed will discuss the life of this skydiver turned national-recognized entrepreneur. \nBorn in Alabama in 1913\, “Skippy” Smith moved to Los Angeles California during the Great Depression with little to nothing in his pocket with hopes of becoming a pilot. By 1939\, he had become a renowned skydiver with his partner Mac “Skip” Gravelly. The duo became well known for the difficult and dangerous free fall jumps followed by delayed parachute openings at air shows.  \nSmith would eventually move to San Diego and become the first African American hired by defense contractor Standard Parachute to test\, pack\, and inspect parachutes manufactured for WWII. Around the same time\, comedian Jack Benny’s partner\, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson\, was looking for ways he could contribute to the war effort and was introduced to Smith. With Anderson’s financial backing\, Smith’s Pacific Parachute Company opened on 8th Street in San Diego in March 1942. Pacific Parachute earned recognition from Time Magazine as the “Top Black Owned Business in the United States” in 1943. Smith also notably employed one of the few integrated workforces in San Diego at that time.   \nAgin Shaheed\, a native Californian\, served in the US Navy from 1968-1972. He has authored two books in his “unsung hero” series. First\, Charles C. Flint\, The Man\, and His Times\, chronicles the life of one of Los Angeles’ most remarkable Black citizens. He also recently released the book\, A Musical Blueprint\, Ernie Freeman\, The Man\, and His Times which recounts the life of the Grammy-winning arranger\, composer\, conductor\, producer\, director\, bandleader\, orchestra leader\, and voice coach. A “compelling blend of victims’ narratives and rigorous historical and legal analysis\, making a significant contribution to our understanding of corporate accountability and transitional justice\,” according to Leigh Payne of the University of Oxford\, this book shares the story of how the French National Railways were complicit in the Holocaust. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAbout the Book \nIn the immediate decades after World War II\, the French National Railways (SNCF) was celebrated for its acts of wartime heroism. However\, recent debates and litigation have revealed the ways the SNCF worked as an accomplice to the Third Reich and was actively complicit in the deportation of 76\,000 Jews and other civilians to death camps. Sarah Federman delves into the interconnected roles—perpetrator\, victim\, and hero—the company took on during the harrowing years of the Holocaust. Grounded in history and case law\, Last Train to Auschwitz traces the SNCF’s journey toward accountability in France and the United States\, culminating in a multimillion-dollar settlement paid by the French government on behalf of the railways. The poignant and informative testimonies of survivors illuminate the long-term effects of the railroad’s impact on individuals\, leading the company to make overdue amends. In a time when corporations are increasingly granted the same rights as people\, Federman’s detailed account demonstrates the obligations businesses have to atone for aiding and abetting governments in committing atrocities. This volume highlights the necessity of corporate integrity and will be essential reading for those called to engage in the difficult work of responding to past harms. \nAbout the Author \nSarah Federman is an author\, educator\, and conflict resolution practitioner. Prior to this work\, she spent a decade as an international executive working with clients such as Google and the NFL. A job transfer from Manhattan to Paris led her to an encounter with her own name on a Holocaust memorial wall. This moment prompted her to turn her attention to helping people avoid mass violence\, focusing specifically on corporate complicity. She is now an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the Joan B Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego.

In this quickly growing city with its bustling neighborhoods of free trade\, older buildings from the modernist era become hard to preserve. These architectural gems are often abandoned and then become obsolete or torn down. Unfortunately\, urban development\, economic forces\, and ineffective laws prevent preservationists from protecting Tijuana’s significant past.  Its tiled arcades and historically significant landmarks are at risk. As an advocate for historic conservation\, a public official\, and an academic in historic preservation\, Maria Curry will discuss the challenges to safeguarding the splendor of Tijuana’s architectural gems and local memory of bygone days.\n \nMaria Curry is an expert in historic preservation at the Secretaria de Cultura de Baja California. Rockefeller\, Warren Buffett\, and Bill Gates. Migrating to San Francisco after the gold rush\, Spreckels built the largest sugar beet factory of its kind in the United States. His sugar beet production in the Salinas Valley changed the focus of valley agriculture from dry to irrigated crops\, resulting in the vast modern agricultural-industrial economy in today’s “Salad Bowl of the World.” When Spreckels gave America its first sugar cube\, he became the “Sugar King.” \nThe indomitable Spreckels was a colorful and complicated character on both sides of the Pacific. A kingpin in the development of the Hawai‘i-California sugarcane industry\, he wielded a clenched fist over Hawai‘i’s economy for nearly two decades after occupying a position of unrivaled power and political influence with the Hawaiian monarchy\, while also advancing major technology developments on the islands. The book is profusely illustrated with many never-published photos\, documents\, insignia\, and charts as well as dozens of veteran interviews. The book tells the story of Naval Special Warfare Boat Units — from the Boat Support Units of the 1960s prowling the coast of North Vietnam and the waterways of the Mekong Delta to today’s Special Boat Teams in action around the world — with some background on maritime special operations since Colonial times. Gray is a retired Master Chief Petty Officer (SWCC) who served from 1969 to 1999 primarily in Naval Special Warfare commands from Boat Support Unit 1 to Special Boat Squadron 1 to Special Boat Unit 12 with combat deployments to Vietnam with MST-2 and the Persian Gulf as a Petty Officer in Charge of a 65 foot Sea Specter. He is a co-founder and contributor of the WARBOATS and PTF Nasty websites. He is the founder\, first President and current Historian of the Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). A longtime Naval historian\, he has written numerous articles ranging from “Ethos” to “On Target” as well as co-author of WARBOATS\, 55 Years of Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft History. \n \nPhil G. Garn served in Special Boat Units 12 and 13 as an officer in charge of Sea Fox and Sea Specter craft\, division officer\, reserve operations officer and officer in charge of the Tactical Operations Crew at NAB Coronado before starting a 26 year carrier in Federal law enforcement with the US Postal Inspection Service. He is a co-founder\, former Secretary and current Historian for Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA). With a longtime interest in Naval history and unconventional warfare\, he has published a number of articles on Naval Special Warfare subjects and was co-author of WARBOATS. \n

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Black History Month\, the Coronado Historical Association and the San Diego History Center invite you to the book launch of Cynthia Hudgins’s memoir\, The Other Side of the Fence. This compelling and important work chronicles the life of Cynthia Hudgins\, a woman who grew up in Coronado in the 1920s and 1930s and was raised there by her formerly enslaved grandparents\, Amos and Annie Hudgins. Claire Fishback\, an author and Cynthia’s granddaughter\, has worked diligently to transcribe Cynthia’s manuscript that was left behind after her passing at the age of 93 in 2015. Kevin Ashley\, who publishes the Coronado Black History Project blog was instrumental in bringing Cynthia’s story to the public’s attention. Both will attend the launch to share the background and process of publishing Cynthia’s memoir. \nThis event is free to attend\, but RSVP is required. RSVP at this website.
