SUMMARY:CIFF Educational Classic Film: "Shane"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival’s 2026 Educational Classic Film Program presents the 1953 Classic Western “Shane” directed by George Stevens. \nThe screening is FREE and open to the public of all ages. \n \nShane: Hollywood’s Most Iconic Western? \nFive short years before the release of Shane\, Director George Stevens returned from a harrowing tour on active-duty during WWII in the Army’s European Film Unit\, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit. Stevens filmed both the D-Day Invasion and the liberation of the Nazi Death Camp at Dachau\, experiences that profoundly changed him\, for the man with the camera cannot avert his eyes. George Stevens understood death’s horrible finality as few other filmmakers ever have. \nStevens’ young son\, George Jr.\, after reading Jack Schaefer’s huge 1949 bestselling novel\, Shane\, urged his father to bring the story to the big screen. In Stevens’ capable hands as both producer and director\, A. B. Guthrie Jr.’s Oscar nominated screenplay adaptation of Shane yielded one of Hollywood’s most enduring Western classics. Set in the post-civil war homesteading era\, Stevens’ movie never glorifies violence; it is shown sparingly and realistically. Set against the majestic Wyoming mountains\, and based on an actual range war\, Shane is a complex\, multi-layered story of men reluctantly called to defend their homes\, wives\, children\, and community by standing up to other men who have no qualms about violently imposing their will on homesteaders who are “inconvenient” to their way of life on what was once a vast Western open range. \nStevens’ masterpiece features an all-star cast\, including two Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominees\, 10-year-old Brandon DeWilde\, then the youngest nominee ever for a competitive Oscar\, and Jack Palance\, in his first movie role\, as Shane’s darkly menacing adversary. Loyal Griggs breathtakingly captures the splendor of the homesteader’s valley set against the majesty of the Grand Tetons\, work for which Griggs won a Best Cinematography Oscar. \nAt the movie’s core is the unforgettable performance of one of Hollywood’s most unlikely stars\, the diminutive Alan Ladd as Shane\, the tale’s enigmatic Knight Errant. Few cinematic moments are more iconic than Shane riding toward the horizon\, as a young boy’s call to the man he and his family will never forget\, to “come back\,” echo off the Wyoming mountains. \nShane is the fourth screening in the 2026 Educational Classic Film Program “The Art of Adaptation\,” which continues to run through the end of May. \nDon’t miss this chance to screen this milestone film in the chronicle of American cinema and participate in post-screening discussion of Shane’s significance cinematically\, historically and culturally. The screener with “The Best Take” during discussion will receive a handsome hard-copy of the Jack Schaefer novel compliments of CIFF. The remaining 2026 “The Art of Adaptation” screening schedule is\, in April: The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Double Indemnity (1944); and in May: A Tale of Two Cities (1937)\, and Les Misérables (1935).

SUMMARY:¡Guerra! The People and Places of the US-Mexico War in San Diego Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In December 1846\, the largest battle of the US-Mexico War in California occurred about 30 miles north of Old Town\, in the San Pasqual Valley near today’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park. American and Mexican forces struggled for control of Alta California and the battle paved the way to the eventual Mexican surrender near Los Angeles\, a month later. As part of the broader war from 1846 to 1848\, the action near San Diego secured control of Upper California for the United States and ensured its inclusion as part of the land ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 175 years ago\, in 1850\, California became the 31st state. \n\nDavid Miller received his PhD from the University of California\, San Diego in 2007. His research focus is the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States. \nDavid has been with USD since 2005\, offering a range of upper and lower-division courses including The Civil War and Reconstruction\, The Civil War and Reconstruction in Popular Culture\, US Immigration History\, California History\, A History of Race and San Diego\, US History to 1877\, and Race and Ethnicity in the American Experience. Miller received the 2017 Faculty Award for Exceptional Teaching\, the 2019 Center for Educational Excellence “Best Attendance” award\, and in 2020 the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture travel grant to explore the history of immigration in San Francisco and New York City from a Catholic perspective. He is the History Department’s internship program coordinator. \nDavid also serves as the co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History\, a joint venture with the San Diego History Center\, and can be found on any given day out and about exploring our city.

SUMMARY:CIFF Student Classic Film: "The Search"
DESCRIPTION:“The Search” – A Mother’s Day Story of the Indomitable Love of a Mother Determined to Find Her Lost Son \n \nSunday\, May 11 at 1 PM\, the 2025 “War That Shaped Our World” CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues with director Fred Zinneman’s “The Search\,” the story of “The Lost Children of Europe.” “The Search” features the Oscar nominated first feature film appearance of Montgomery Clift and a Special Juvenile Academy Award winning performance by nine-year old Ivan Jandl. The Search is also noteworthy as American immigrant\, Austrian-born Jewish director Fred Zinnemann’s first box office success and as perhaps the first Hollywood feature film dramatizing the consequences of The Holocaust. \nFollowing the War\, orphaned children are moved to a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation camp in Germany. During an interview to determine his identity a young boy named Karel\, separated from his mother at Auschwitz\, is only able to say in broken German: “I don’t know.” While being transported to a second camp\, some children panic. Karel and another boy escape by jumping in a river. As Karel’s companion drowns\, Karel reaches the riverbank\, but when only a hat is recovered UN officials presume he has drowned. Simultaneously\, the audience learns his mother\, Hanna\, has survived the death camps and is searching for her son. While hiding in the city’s ruins Karel encounters an American soldier\, “Steve” Stevenson (Montgomery Clift) who becomes determined to help the boy. Convinced his relatives are dead\, Stevenson works on a plan to take Karel to the U.S. when his tour of duty ends in hopes of adopting him. The dramatic narrative intensifies as circumstances conspire with a mother’s indomitable love to resolve the drama: Will these two Holocaust survivors be reunited as mother and son? \n \nDirector Fred Zinnemann lost both parents to the Holocaust. In this documentary-style post-war feature\, he creates a realistic cinematic account to dramatize the real-world plight of hundreds of thousands of orphaned children struggling to survive and the compassionate people working to help redeem their post-war lives. Nominated for three Oscars in 1948 including Best Best Director for Zinnemann\, “The Search” is a movie you will never forget. \nThe complete 2025 Student Classic schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. The screening is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:CIFF Student Classic Film Series: "They Were Expendable"

WWII themed screenings will continue through May. The complete Student Classic Series schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF Website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. All Student Classic screenings are free. \nIn October 1944\, General Douglas McArthur returned to the Philippines\, as he had promised\, after being evacuated to Australia in 1942. Less than a year later\, Japan surrendered\, ending the Second World War. Director John Ford’s 1945 They Were Expendable is based on a bestselling book of the same name recounting the heroic actions of Navy officers and sailors assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three during the disastrous fall of the Philippines in the wake of the December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Ford’s film is a fictionalized account of the exploits of Medal of Honor recipient John C. Bulkeley and the men of Squadron Three. Just before the fall of Corregidor\, it was LT Bulkeley and his crew who evacuated MacArthur and his family aboard PT 41\, a 77-foot motor torpedo boat\, and carried them over 600 miles of open ocean to Mindanao\, from where they were flown to Australia. As MacArthur put it\, “You have taken me out of the jaws of death. I shall never forget it.” \nMacArthur left behind more than 36\,000 Army\, Marine and Navy forces\, including the men of Squadron Three\, few of whom escaped the disastrous consequences of a military defeat that stunned our nation. The dogged resistance of those who remained delayed the Japanese advance. They bought\, with their lives and blood\, desperately needed time for the Pacific Fleet to rebuild and rearm to begin to take the fight to the enemy. More than 60\,000 Filipino and 15\,000 American prisoners of war suffered through the infamous 66-mile Bataan Death March. The film also honors The Angels of Bataan\, the 11 Navy nurses\, 67 Army nurses captured and imprisoned by the Japanese\, the largest group of American women ever captured and imprisoned in wartime. \nDirector John Ford (then Captain Ford USNR on active duty) crafted a movie\, with a screenplay by visionary Naval Aviator and Coronado legend\, Frank “Spig” Wead (CDR USN Ret.)\, that tells a gripping story of honor\, courage\, and commitment\, perhaps better than any other Navy themed film in Hollywood history. Ford’s unflinching dramatization of a disastrous military defeat examines the human and emotional costs of war and the impossibly difficult choices those who lead officers\, sailors and\, yes\, even nurses\, face in wartime. Starring Robert Montgomery\, John Wayne and Donna Reed\, this superb motion picture is a history lesson necessary and appropriate for all ages. It is a “must see” for all who have served our Navy and for all those whose loved ones who have served or are serving today in uniform. \nThe complete 2025 Student Classic schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF Website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. All Student Classic Film screenings are free. \n  \n
