DESCRIPTION:Attack aviation is intense and dangerous. It necessitates the direct engagement of ground targets at low altitude. Attack aircraft are usually fighters or fighter-sized aircraft\, with one or two engines\, and one or two crew. For this event\, R. G. Head (Brig. Gen.\, Ret.) will present his new book US Attack Aviation: Air Force and Navy Light Attack: 1916 to the Present. This is a story about flying. It is told by naval aviators\, Air Force fighter pilots\, and the men who built the airplanes the pilots flew. \nAuthor R. G. Head (Brig. Gen.\, Ret.) has extensive experience in combat (325 missions\, DFC\, Silver Star) and an in-depth understanding of doctrine (taught future pilots at the Air Force Academy) and gained first-person exposure to the policy and engineering aspects of the aircraft procurement process while serving at the Pentagon and later as a private consultant working in collaboration with the US Navy. His work provides an overview history of American attack aviation from its inception to present\, including both the US Navy and Air Force. The pillars of the narrative are several case studies that characterize the evolution of technology and tactics over time: SBD Dauntless\, AD Skyraider\, A-4 Skyhawk\, A-7 Corsair II\, A-10 Thunderbolt II\, and F/A-18 Hornet. Each of the cases contains first-person accounts that include a description of the aircraft’s origin\, competitive procurement\, major attack features\, and combat employment. Head (Brig. And\, that history is easiest to see on foot – when you have a chance to linger in front of a tiny\, shingled house\, perhaps\, and meet the resident as he comes out into the yard to water his roses and tells you about the multiple generations who have lived in the home. Or\, when you seemingly stumble upon the magical house from which the Wizard of Oz was born. \nWe’re proud to host you on Coronado’s premier walking tour. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. SUMMARY:History of the U.S. Submarine Force
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to join us for a special lecture in conjunction with the latest exhibit A View from the Periscope. CHA welcomes Commander Jeff Tyler\, USN\, Ret. to speak about the history of the U.S. Naval Submarine Force. The presentation will include an overview of the Navy’s submarines from Ohio ballistic missile class submarines to the Virginia fast attack submarine class. The presentation will cover submarine specifications and systems\, as well as notable submarine incidents and disasters. \nReception at 5:30 pm\, followed by 6:00 pm lecture. Doors open at 5:20 pm. \nTickets can be purchased at coronadohistory.org\, by calling 619-435-7242\, or in the Museum Store. \nMember ($15 each) | Non-Member ($18 each) \nImportant Registration Information: Attendance is restricted to fully vaccinated persons with a booster shot. He is a graduate of the Naval Enlisted Science Education Program (NESEP) at the University of Washington. Over his 25+ year Naval career\, he served on the USS Lewis & Clark (SSBN 644)\, USS John Adams (SSBN 620)\, USS George Washington (SSBN 598)\, USS Corporal (SS 346)\, USS Grouper (AGSS 2l4)\, USS Florikan (ASR 9)\, and USS Point Loma (AGDS 2).  CDR Tyler has received several awards including the Navy Command at Sea Badge\, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star\, Navy Achievement Medal\, and the National Defense and Vietnam Service Medals.  CDR Tyler is a USN Mk 12 Dive System diver.  In retirement\, he has been active in the Rotary Club of Coronado\, the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission\, the Coronado Island Film Festival\, and the Coronado Community Foundation.  In George Galdorisi’s novel\, “The Coronado Conspiracy\,” “Jeff Tyler” is the National Security Advisor to the President of the United States. \n
