SUMMARY:Learn to Save a Life: Free CPR & AED Training Offered
DESCRIPTION:In a cardiac emergency\, every second counts. San Diego Project Heartbeat is offering a free\, hands-only CPR and AED training session to help community members learn how to act quickly and confidently when a life is on the line. \nThe one-hour training will take place on Friday\, August 15\, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the John D. Spreckels Center\, 1019 Seventh Street in Coronado. \n \nThis class is designed to teach participants how to recognize the signs of sudden cardiac arrest and how to properly perform hands-only CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED). While this training does not provide official CPR certification\, it offers essential skills that could make the difference between life and death in an emergency. \nThe goal of Project Heartbeat is to increase survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest by providing community access to training and defibrillators. According to health experts\, CPR—especially if performed immediately—can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required. Participants can sign up online at coronado.ca.us/civicrec\, by calling 619-522-7343\, or by visiting the Spreckels Center front desk. \nTake this opportunity to learn how to save a life—it could be the most important hour of your summer.

SUMMARY:Learning to relax through mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This winter series taught by UCSD’s Jamie Pineda will provide insights into relaxation and how to experience the mind freer from emotional reactivity. It will offer information on what mindfulness is and how to develop it to live a stress free\, happier\, and healthier life. \nPerfect for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Sessions begin weekly on Sundays starting Jan. 4. Attend one class or all four. \n\nClass 1: Learning to Relax \nWe will explore what creates an unbalanced mind and why learning to relax is important. Most of us believe that getting rid of thoughts is the way to a calm and peaceful mind. The key is in how to do it. By allowing the mind to rest as it is\, we can turn down the volume of thinking so it no longer bothers us. We call this way of attending “mindfulness.” \n\nJaime Pineda is professor of neuroscience\, cognitive science\, and psychiatry at the University of California\, San Diego. He is the author of several books\, the latest being Controlling Mental Chaos: Harnessing the Power of the Creative Mind (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2023). He is a long-time contemplative practitioner and a certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher (MMTCP\, 2025). He now dedicates his time sharing the insights he’s learned as a neuroscientist and mindfulness student.
