SUMMARY:Soroptimist program on human trafficking awareness and prevention
DESCRIPTION:Children as young as eight years-old can fall victim to trafficking\, and the average age is just thirteen. Trafficking has been reported in all schools in San Diego\, and it happens in plain sight. The Center for Justice & Reconciliation at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is fighting this attack on our youth with an outreach program showcasing in San Diego middle and high schools. Students in grades six through twelve learn to recognize grooming tactics and hear about practical tools designed to protect themselves and their peers from exploitation. Coronado Soroptimist invite middle/high school students and their families\, CUSD faculty\, as well as all interested community members to attend this important information session on Monday\, Feb. 23 at 5:30 pm in the Winn Room. \nPLNU’s outreach program\, kNOwMORE\, is a drama-based and student-centered human trafficking awareness and prevention curriculum grounded in the latest sex trafficking research in San Diego and developed in collaboration with leading experts. The main vehicle for presenting this information is a film that will be shared with attendees. The film features actors portraying various at-risk situations before participating in a follow-up panel discussion. \nEbony Robinson\, kNOwMORE’s program manager and a survivor of exploitation herself\, will be the evening’s speaker. She is a leader in the field of assisting survivors of trafficking with over ten years of experience in a number of different settings\, including schools\, the juvenile justice system\, and survivor transition programs. \n \nPlease join the Soroptimists as they seek to strengthen our community’s awareness and expand understanding of the tools needed to protect local youth from the consequences of trafficking in the San Diego area. \nkNOwMORE website link \nCoronado Soroptimist

SUMMARY:Free film screening of "Three (Extra)Ordinary Women"
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8)\, Soroptimist International of Coronado\, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival\, is proud to host a free screening honoring three extraordinary women whose stories reflect courage\, leadership\, and resilience. This gathering aligns with Soroptimist’s mission to support and empower women and girls\, while creating space for meaningful conversation and connection. When women come together\, we lift one another higher — because reaching the top of any mountain is powerful\, but sharing the view\, the journey\, and the lessons along the way is what truly transforms us all. \n \nThrough captivating images of Mount Kilimanjaro and eye-catching animation\, Three (Extra)Ordinary Women tells the personal stories of three women of color who have collectively overcome poverty\, abuse\, systemic racism\, and political occupation through practicing forgiveness\, helping others\, and immersing themselves in nature. As they brave their biggest physical obstacle yet – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – trekking up Africa’s tallest peak through arctic temperatures and some of the highest altitude on the planet\, they discover they still have emotional hurdles to climb. \nWhile centering women of color in nature (rarely seen as the outdoors have traditionally not been a safe place for POC)\, the film touches on themes of trauma\, self-worth\, sisterhood\, empowerment\, resilience\, and nature as a healing agent that facilitates growth. \nThis film is timely in light of the conflict taking place between Israel and Palestine by exploring the Palestinian occupation and systemic racism in the United States and how both have equally disenfranchised people of color. But the message is not about more divisiveness\, it is about how tough-yet achievable-forgiveness\, healing\, overcoming\, and reconciliation can be. \nRSVP TODAY:  https://coronadofilmfest.com/three-extraordinary-women/ \nPlease note: An RSVP or reservation does not guarantee a seat.  Seating is first come\, first seated when doors open at 1:30 pm. Guests will not be admitted once the screening has begun. \n

SUMMARY:CIFF Educational Classic Film: "Shane"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival’s 2026 Educational Classic Film Program presents the 1953 Classic Western “Shane” directed by George Stevens. \nThe screening is FREE and open to the public of all ages. \n \nShane: Hollywood’s Most Iconic Western? \nFive short years before the release of Shane\, Director George Stevens returned from a harrowing tour on active-duty during WWII in the Army’s European Film Unit\, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit. Stevens filmed both the D-Day Invasion and the liberation of the Nazi Death Camp at Dachau\, experiences that profoundly changed him\, for the man with the camera cannot avert his eyes. George Stevens understood death’s horrible finality as few other filmmakers ever have. \nStevens’ young son\, George Jr.\, after reading Jack Schaefer’s huge 1949 bestselling novel\, Shane\, urged his father to bring the story to the big screen. In Stevens’ capable hands as both producer and director\, A. B. Guthrie Jr.’s Oscar nominated screenplay adaptation of Shane yielded one of Hollywood’s most enduring Western classics. Set in the post-civil war homesteading era\, Stevens’ movie never glorifies violence; it is shown sparingly and realistically. Set against the majestic Wyoming mountains\, and based on an actual range war\, Shane is a complex\, multi-layered story of men reluctantly called to defend their homes\, wives\, children\, and community by standing up to other men who have no qualms about violently imposing their will on homesteaders who are “inconvenient” to their way of life on what was once a vast Western open range. \nStevens’ masterpiece features an all-star cast\, including two Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominees\, 10-year-old Brandon DeWilde\, then the youngest nominee ever for a competitive Oscar\, and Jack Palance\, in his first movie role\, as Shane’s darkly menacing adversary. Loyal Griggs breathtakingly captures the splendor of the homesteader’s valley set against the majesty of the Grand Tetons\, work for which Griggs won a Best Cinematography Oscar. \nAt the movie’s core is the unforgettable performance of one of Hollywood’s most unlikely stars\, the diminutive Alan Ladd as Shane\, the tale’s enigmatic Knight Errant. Few cinematic moments are more iconic than Shane riding toward the horizon\, as a young boy’s call to the man he and his family will never forget\, to “come back\,” echo off the Wyoming mountains. \nShane is the fourth screening in the 2026 Educational Classic Film Program “The Art of Adaptation\,” which continues to run through the end of May. \nDon’t miss this chance to screen this milestone film in the chronicle of American cinema and participate in post-screening discussion of Shane’s significance cinematically\, historically and culturally. The screener with “The Best Take” during discussion will receive a handsome hard-copy of the Jack Schaefer novel compliments of CIFF. The remaining 2026 “The Art of Adaptation” screening schedule is\, in April: The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Double Indemnity (1944); and in May: A Tale of Two Cities (1937)\, and Les Misérables (1935).

SUMMARY:CIFF Educational Classic Film "The Maltese Falcon" (1941)
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival presents Director John Huston’s 1941 Best Picture Oscar Nominated feature film\, “The Maltese Falcon” on Sunday\, April 12\, 1:30-4 pm in the Coronado Public Library Ruby Room. The screening is free and open to the public of all ages and is part of this year’s Educational Classic Film Series – “The Art of Adaptation.” \n \nJohn Huston’s Landmark Film Noir Classic: “The Maltese Falcon” \nAs darkness descended on Europe in the late 1930s and early ’40s\, a new movie genre\, (in retrospect) labeled Film Noir\, emerged from Hollywood. It featured stories of the darker side of human nature and fatalistic themes of murder\, crime\, double-dealing\, and corruption. The moral ambiguity of the genre appealed to the anxieties of audiences facing a world seemingly gone mad. \nWarner Brothers long held the film rights to Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel\, The Maltese Falcon\, based on a story he serialized in the pulp fiction magazine Black Mask. The Warners produced a notorious pre-code version in 1931 and a later comedic version in 1936\, “Satan Met a Lady\,” starring Bette Davis that was a notable flop. \nThe Warners offered a young\, promising screenwriter\, John Huston\, the opportunity to adapt and remake Hammett’s story for a third time as his directorial debut. The result: perhaps the most enduring\, admired\, and imitated detective mystery movie ever made. “The Maltese Falcon” is a definite must-see in the American film canon. \nIn addition to the story’s appeal with audiences\, Bogart’s “hard-boiled” detective\, Sam Spade\, proved his breakout role as a leading man. The supporting ensemble cast includes an exceptional roster of Warner Brothers Golden Age contract talent: Mary Astor as the story’s femme fatale\, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre in their first of many screen pairings and the inimitable Elisha Cook\, Jr. as Greenstreet’s gun-toting “boy” who Bogart’s Sam Spade continually delights in humiliating. \nFeaturing a roster of menacing\, murderous\, deceitful characters\, and crackling\, quotable dialogue\, all wrapped in Arthur Edeson’s shadowy cinematography\, its themes of betrayal\, greed\, and cynicism make “The Maltese Falcon” the quintessential example of the Film Noir genre. Don’t miss this timeless 1941 Warner Brothers Classic! \nThis screening is free and open to the public of all ages.
