SUMMARY:Coronado Flower Show
DESCRIPTION:The largest tented Flower Show in the U.S. and Coronado’s longest running tradition will be held April 23-24\, 2022. \nWeekend long centennial celebration brings together local businesses\, nonprofits and community groups across the arts\, agriculture\, environmental and education fields. More than 4\,000 plant lovers anticipated to attend the two-day outdoor event. \nThe 100th Annual Coronado Flower Show\, a co-production of the Coronado Floral Association (CFA) and City of Coronado\, and supported by the County of San Diego\, will make its return April 23-24\, 2022 to Spreckels Park. Event organizers are thrilled to bring together again anthophiles (people who love flowers!)\, as well as plant-curious community members from around San Diego County to commemorate this major milestone\, despite a two-year hiatus during the pandemic. \n“As we approach our celebration to recognize our 100th anniversary\, we grow more excited each day to once again bring our community together to experience the sights and scents of beautiful floral design\, appreciate the carefully curated home fronts and witness the joyful moment when show exhibitors are recognized for their artistry\,” says Diana Drummey\, 2022 Chair\, Coronado Flower Show. “We look forward to celebrating our centennial with the City of Coronado neighbors and our wider community of friends and longtime supporters. In addition\, we acknowledge a new generation of gardening and floral design enthusiasts that will take us into the next 100 years.” \n\n100 Years of the Coronado Flower Show – April 23 & 24 \n \n\nWhat to expect at this year’s show \nDuring the pandemic\, many new habits and hobbies were discovered by homebodies. One obsession that social distancing inspired was a newfound love for plants and gardening. For three years\, new gardeners have blossomed everywhere\, creating a new passion and appreciation for the world of horticulture and plant care. Coronado Flower Show organizers encourage these new plant enthusiasts to attend the event to not only build their skills\, but also meet and learn from seasoned gardening aficionados. \nKnown as the “longest running tradition in Coronado\,” the Coronado Flower Show offers its attendees beautiful landscape displays and a variety of floral competitions with a mission to educate the public. The show is organized using the National Garden Clubs\, Inc. flower show rules. Over the two-day event\, more than 4\,000 attendees will gather in Spreckels Park in the center of Coronado. Visitors will enjoy live bandstand entertainment\, delicious food\, a beer & wine garden\, as well as shopping featuring several local artists and small businesses. \nPrior to the event\, from April 8-10\, there will be a “Home Front Judging” event to recognize and appreciate exceptional home and business gardens throughout the city. During the three-day event\, over 150 local community volunteers will show up to walk the beautiful streets of Coronado to appreciate the meticulously curated gardens\, home fronts\, store fronts\, apartment buildings\, condominium complexes\, churches\, and school gardens. The volunteers’ results of the “Home Front Judging” event are due by April 11 and ribbon winners will be announced prior to the Coronado Flower Show weekend. \n\nAnd the Winners Are… 2022 Home Front Judging Results \n \n\n“I’ve participated in the Coronado Flower Show for over 30 years and am excited to once again take part in this year’s event\,” says Carvill Veech\, Coronado resident and longtime Coronado Flower Show participant. “I look forward to meeting up with old friends and encourage new flower enthusiasts to join in the fun of this 100-year tradition by entering their own flower arrangement\, plant or cut flower.” Veech is a flower arranger\, a Master Flower Show Judge\, and has participated in the Coronado Flower Show since 1990. She has won countless awards and ribbons from “Best Picture Box” to “Best Designers Choice\,” and much more. \n“We’re thankful to our wonderful sponsors\, including Coronado Floral Association\, City of Coronado\, and the County of San Diego for making this year’s 100th celebration possible. The Coronado Flower Show has always been volunteer-driven\, and with the support of the community we’re able to continue the city’s most cherished springtime tradition\,” says Drummey. \n\nThe 1922 Club \n \n\nFor up-to-date details about this year’s event and ways to get involved\, visit coronadoflowershow.com. \nRELATED: \nFlower Show Kick-Off Party Blooms Big and Bright; Coronado Flower Show Set to Celebrate 100 Years \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Low Tide Ride & Stride 2022
DESCRIPTION:Support First Responders and Wounded Warriors \nCelebrate the 25th Anniversary of Coronado Rotary’s Low Tide Ride & Stride. Kick off summer and Father’s Day Weekend by running\, walking or biking along Coronado Beach on Saturday\, June 18. This new 3.1 mile up-and-back course is chip-timed with awards for the top five cyclists and runners. Enjoy waves breaking on the golden sands on one of the most beautiful beaches in world. Share the morning with dolphins\, sea lions\, a variety of shorebirds\, and your fellow participants. \nEvery participant receives a beautiful long-sleeve tech shirt and a colorful\, custom designed keepsake 25th Anniversary participant’s medal. Afterwards\, enjoy the perfect locals‘ morning at Sunset Park with a continental style breakfast and a wide array of vendors. Relax in your beach chair to the music of local musician\, Matt Heinecke. \nWhat better way to begin your Father’s Day weekend — gazing at the ocean\, listening to music and chatting with friends and family after a satisfying run\, walk or bike ride across the same sands on which Navy SEALs train? \nThe Low Tide Ride & Stride is Coronado Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser with the majority of the proceeds going to support combat-wounded veterans and first responders.* The hundreds of thousands of dollars raised over the years by this event have become increasingly important to military and first responders — both local and across the nation. \nIn recognition of the impact of Low Tide Ride & Stride donations\, the event has received both the San Diego Military Advisory Council’s Achievement Award and the Armed Services YMCA Admiral St George Award. \nJoin us Saturday\, June 18th at the 25th Anniversary of the Low Tide Ride & Stride \nSign up today at www.lowtideride.com \n* Beneficiaries: Wounded Warrior Homes\, Armed Services YMCA San Diego\, Rotary Firefighters Home\, and First Responders Children’s Foundation.

SUMMARY:San Diego Therapeutic Horsemanship to Host Ukrainian Refugee Horse Therapy
DESCRIPTION:San Diego Therapeutic Horsemanship\, a nonprofit that provides horse-based therapy programs to veterans and others who have experienced trauma\, will host a group of refugee families from Ukraine for an afternoon of equine therapy on Saturday\, June 18\, from 2 PM to 5 PM. The event will include interacting with horses\, taking photos\, creating souvenirs\, and enjoying a barbeque and horseback drill team show. \nSeeking to help refugees of the Ukrainian conflict\, the board of San Diego Therapeutic Horsemanship based at Driftwood Ranch in the Tijuana River Valley reached out to Catholic Charities\, which is a nonprofit working with refugees at the Mexico-U.S. border. Tijuana River Valley Equestrian Association\, which also operates from Driftwood Ranch\, will also be participating. \n“The therapeutic opportunity that we offer with the horses promotes mindfulness\,” says Francesa Buitenkant\, San Diego Therapeutic Horsemanship Program Supervisor. “The focus on the horse gives people a break from trauma. We work with veterans\, but also have a program that serves youth who are victims of crime or abuse\, living in foster care\, experiencing homelessness\, or grieving the loss of a family member. This is why we wanted to extend this program to the refugee families. It’s what we do. We hope our equine activities can help these families also.” \nDuring the event on June 18\, participating families will meet some of the horses who live at Driftwood\, have their pictures taken with them\, and make a souvenir frame (one per family) and a horse necklace. A farrier will also give a shoeing demonstration and a roper will let kids try their hand at roping a calf replica. The day will end with a barbeque and a presentation by the girls riding team Escaramuza Realeza Charra. \n

DESCRIPTION:Help document California’s incredible coastal biodiversity and take part in this year’s Snapshot Cal Coast with a BioBlitz! Library staff will teach you how to use iNaturalist to make observations of the plants and animals you see at the beach. \nSnapshot Cal Coast is an annual California statewide community science effort that encourages people to make and share observations of plants\, animals\, and seaweeds along the California coast using the iNaturalist app. Led by the California Academy of Sciences with support from the California Ocean Protection Council\, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife\, and the MPA (Marine Protected Area) Collaborative Network\, and an array of other partners\, we are creating a valuable snapshot in time of where species are located along our coast. \nMake sure to download the free iNaturalist app and bring your device to participate! Look for the Library’s green pop-up near the main lifeguard tower. We will have specimens from the San Diego Natural History Museum for folks to view! \n  \n
