SUMMARY:CoSA Instrumental Music Fall Recital
DESCRIPTION:Coronado musician Matt Heinecke is back and excited to bring Coronado School of the Arts’ (CoSA) talented young artists on stage for their first concert of the year. The CoSA Instrumental Music Fall Recital is happening in the Black Box Theatre at 650 D Avenue on Tuesday\, October 15 at 6pm. \nThe recital will feature a string quintet\, jazz ensemble\, woodwind trio\, saxophone trio\, and an all-new brass quintet. Several solo pianists will also be featured. For many of the students\, it will be their first time performing in a small\, intimate setting where they can really connect with their audience\, according to Heinecke. \n“Our focus is to provide students with real-life experiences as professional musicians\, which makes these small ensembles such a great opportunity\,” said Heinecke. “To get that experience in high school is invaluable.” \nHeinecke\, who has chaired the Instrumental Music Conservatory in the past\, has a long relationship with many of the young artists and is happy to work with them again. \n“I have taught many of these students since they were in middle school\, some as early as 4th grade\, and it is very special to see them level up and take on these new challenges\,” said Heinecke. “I’m excited to back as CoSA’s music department director!” \nTickets range from $5-$10 and are available for purchase on EventBrite. \nThe CoSA Instrumental Music Conservatory emphasizes the study of classical and jazz music. Students receive intensive training in their chosen instruments in wind\, percussion\, brass\, jazz and string. Students also study music theory\, ear training\, jazz theory and improvisation\, electronic music skills\, composition and orchestration. \nClasses are also offered in music history and culture\, music technology and the music business. Students play piano\, drums\, violin\, viola\, cello\, saxophone\, electric guitar\, tuba\, trombone or any other instrument they desire to learn. CoSA Instrumental Music students are passionate about their craft\, and many go on to study music in college\, or continue to perform as adults. \nAbout CoSA\nCoronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, home to 200 scholar artists grades 9 through 12\, who attend the nationally ranked Coronado High School. CoSA provides an intense\, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego\, who are admitted after a competitive application/audition process.\nEach school day CoSA offers three or more hours of instruction\, pairing young artists with educators who are also industry specialists. With a curriculum designed by professional artist/educators\, students are immersed in their chosen specialty in one of six conservatories: Classical and Contemporary Dance\, Digital Arts (Animation\, Filmmaking\, Game Design\, and Graphic Design)\, Instrumental Music\, Musical Theatre & Drama\, Theatre Production\, Design & Management and Visual Art. CoSA is a State of California-approved Career Technical Education program.\nOur award-winning student artists perform and exhibit at the Coronado Performing Arts Center on the Coronado High School campus\, in either the 570 seat Main Stage or 80 seat Black Box theatre. Coronado Performing Arts Center is also available for rent to local organizations. About twenty five percent of the CoSA budget is raised each year by the CoSA Foundation. If you would like to see the arts continue to thrive in education\, please consider making a donation at www.cosafoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Kimmi Bitter
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 18 we welcome Kimmi Bitter who is taking the country music scene by storm and won the Song of the Year at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards. \n \n\n“The future of classic country is Kimmi Bitter\,” as Saving Country Music boldly states. Driven by a hyper-obsession for the 1960s\, Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang create a captivating soundscape that blends golden-era Countrypolitan with psychedelic twangs and a mod flair. \nCreating a buzz from her grassroots efforts and vigorous touring\, her debut album “Old School” hit the ground running in 2024 landing on the Top 25 Americana Album Radio Chart and has garnered three separate song nominations to date. Tracks like the tear-jerking ballad “My Grass is Blue” have grown comparisons of time when Patsy Cline and The Jordanaires overtook the radio waves. Saving Country Music called it “solid country gold\,” nominating it for Single of the Year alongside the likes of Charley Crockett and Sierra Ferrell. Though driving her career independently\, she is no stranger to building her accolades. \n“Aquamarine” took home Song of the Year at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards alongside fellow nominees Jason Mraz\, P.O.D.\, Slightly Stoopid\, and Thee Sacred Souls. Additionally\, her breakout album skyrocketed to #1 on the Alt. Country Specialty Charts for four consecutive weeks. She’s a San Diego Music Award winner for Best Country/Americana Artist\, with “My Grass is Blue” snagging another Song of the Year nod in 2023. Regarding her live performance\, she was notably coined one of the “biggest musical takeaways” at Nashville’s most recent Americanafest. \n \n\nRegister to receive reminder emails only for this event. SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: The Mist by Stephen King
DESCRIPTION:Spoilers Book Club\nThe Spoilers Book Club reads books that are turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \nEvent Details\n\nIn the wake of a summer storm\, terror descends…David Drayton\, his son Billy\, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there\, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves\, a religious zealot\, Mrs. Carmody\, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly\, staying in the store may prove fatal\, and the Draytons\, along with store employee Ollie Weeks\, Amanda Dumfries\, Irene Reppler\, and Dan Miller\, attempt to make their escape. But what’s out there may be worse than what they left behind. \nThis exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine. \nThe Mist (Rated R)\n2007\n2h 6m

SUMMARY:CIFF Celebrates Halloween with "Young Frankenstein"
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a break from the ever-constant and\, oh so brutal election-year vitriol? Well\, CIFF has a welcome treat for us all with a screening of the 1974 comedy horror spoof\, Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein\,” on Wed.\, October 30\, at Coronado’s Village Theatre\, 820 Orange Avenue. \nPresented by Coronado Island Film Festival as part of the popular monthly Classic Film Series\, doors open at 5 pm for a Meet and Greet with complimentary libations\, followed by a vintage cartoon and the feature presentation at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and are available at coronadofilmfest.com. \nHalloween costumes are encouraged. \n \nThe film\, a parody of the classic horror films of the 1930s and ’40s\, is directed by Brooks and written by Brooks and his friend and frequent collaborator\, Gene Wilder\, who plays the title character. Also starring are Peter Boyle as the monster\, Terry Garr\, Cloris Leachman\, Marty Feldman\, Madeline Kahn\, Kenneth Mars\, Richard Haydn\, and Gene Hackman\, in a hilarious turn as the Blind Hermit. \nCloris Leachman is her usual fearless self as the intimidating housekeeper Frau Blücher. Those who attended the CIFF Leonard Maltin Celebrity Tribute Award Gala at the Del in 2019 will never forget her as she accepted that year’s Legacy Award\, bringing down the house by climbing onto a stunned Leonard Maltin’s lap! That may have been one of her last public appearances before her death in 2021 at age 94. \nAt Brooks’ insistence (and a firm stand with the studio\, who wanted color)\, “Young Frankenstein” is shot entirely in black and white for vintage authenticity. To make his point\, he changed studios from Columbia to 20th Century Fox. \nThis is a cast of very funny people who obviously “got” Brooks’ brand of comic genius and had great fun working together. Many of the lines are ad-libbed (and left in) and scenes regularly required extra takes because the cast and crew repeatedly cracked up. \nMel Brooks\, still active at age 98\, considers this the best film he ever directed. It so happens this is the second Brooks film CIFF has screened in this year’s Classic Series (remember “Blazing Saddles” in June?)\, deemed appropriate because both movies were released in the same year (1974)\, fifty years ago. \nTickets are available at coronadofilmfest.com. And\, while you’re at it\, CIFF 2024 badges and individual tickets are now available for our 9th annual festival\, Wed. Nov. 6 – Sun. Nov. 10.

SUMMARY:Billy Wilder’s "The Apartment" - CIFF Classic Film
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Island Film Festival and the creative mind of the great Billy Wilder (“Some Like it Hot”) have just made your Thanksgiving holiday a little bit racy and a lot more fun. \nThe 1960 romantic comedy-drama “The Apartment” will come to Coronado’s Village Theatre on Wed.\, November 30 (the night before Thanksgiving). \nProduced\, directed and written (with I.A.L. Diamond) by Wilder and nominated for ten Academy Awards (winner of five)\, the film is part of CIFF’s monthly Classic Film Series. Doors will open at 5 pm for a Meet and Greet with complimentary libations\, followed by a vintage cartoon and the feature presentation at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and are available at coronadofilmfest.com. \n \nFollowing the success of 1958’s “Some Like it Hot\,” Wilder was eager to work again with actor Jack Lemmon\, whom he compared to the brilliant Charlie Chaplin and thought could do no wrong. The film also stars Shirley MacLaine\, Fred MacMurray\, and Jack Kruschen. The film won Best Picture\, Best Director (Wilder)\, and Best Screenplay (Wilder and I.A.L Diamond). Lemmon and MacLaine were nominated for Best Actor and Actress\, and Kruschen\, who plays  Lemmon’s doctor neighbor\, for Best Supporting Actor. Both Lemmon and MacLaine won Golden Globes for their performances. \nAustria/ Hungarian-born Wilder and the Romanian-born Diamond enjoyed a thirty-year collaboration\, including the1958 “Some Like it Hot.” The two managed to combine witty dialogue with sexual situations\, exploring male-female relationships with the right mix of satire\, humor\, and sentiment without ever becoming sleazy or cliché. \n“The Apartment” tells the story of lonely bachelor insurance clerk C.C. “Bud” Baxter (Lemmon) attempting to curry favor and climb the corporate ladder by allowing his married superiors to use his Upper West Side apartment for their illicit romantic liaisons. Meantime\, Baxter falls for the building’s elevator operator Fran Kubelik (MacLaine)\, who\, as it turns out\, is having an affair with Baxter’s boss. Oh dear. \nIn the hands of any other director\, this could have been yet another wacky rom-com with some sex thrown in\, but Wilder has given these characters depth and humanity\, and his cast more than rises to the occasion. Prepare to enjoy brilliant writing\, directing\, and spot-on\, Oscar-worthy performances\, all on Village Theatre’s big screen. There’s no experience quite like it.

Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards\, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. \n \nDecember 4: The Russian Question (1948\, Not Rated\, 91 min\, Russian with English subtitles) \nRenowned director Mikhail Romm’s controversial\, rarely screened feature throws audiences back to the dawn of the Cold War when a natural affinity between two nations had been corrupted by American yellow journalism and the power of capitalist money. An honest journalist struggles with his conscience when he is forced to write a scaremongering report about Soviet belligerent and expansionist intentions in order to further a campaign of propaganda undertaken by American media and conservative elites.
