SUMMARY:"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" Still Sizzles After All These Years
DESCRIPTION:Every month\, Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF) treats the town to a classic movie at the gloriously restored 1947 Village Theatre at 820 Orange Avenue. You may have seen these films a zillion times on TV\, but to see them the way they were meant to be seen –  larger than life on the big screen – is a whole new experience! \nJoin CIFF on Wednesday\, July 31\, for the 1958 film adaption of the Tennessee Williams 1955 Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play\, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Feast your eyes on two of the most gorgeous icons in cinematic history\, Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman\, who star as Maggie the Cat and her alcoholic husband Brick Pollitt. Burl Ives\, reprising his role from the play\, also shines as the bombastic family patriarch\, Big Daddy Pollitt. Doors open at 5 p.m. for complimentary adult beverages\, followed at 5:30 by a vintage cartoon and the feature presentation. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at coronadofilmfest.com. \nCreating a sense of claustrophobia and tension\, while adding to the film’s Southern personality\, the story is set in the confines of the family mansion and takes place over the course of one day in the life of the wealthy southern Pollitt family. The family\, in all its glorious dysfunction\, is gathered under one roof to celebrate Big Daddy’s 65th birthday. The film also stars  Jack Carson and Judith Anderson\, along with an impressive supporting cast. This movie is a Master Class in ensemble acting\, worth watching closely for that reason alone. \nAlthough Tennessee Williams was disappointed in the changes to his original play\, necessary due the the censorship of the time\, the film nonetheless holds up brilliantly as a thought-provoking study of the complexities of the human relationship. It was well-received critically and at the box office\, and was nominated for six Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, Best Actor (Paul Newman)\, Best Actress (Elizabeth Taylor)\, Best Director (Richard Brooks)\, Best Writing (Richard Brooks and James Poe)\, and Best Cinematography (William Daniels). It was MGM’s most successful release of 1958\, but “Gigi” swept the 1959 Oscars with a record-breaking nine wins! \nNext month\, celebrate America’s love of baseball with the 1984 heartwarmer\, “The Natural\,” starring Robert Redford\, on Aug. 28. Tickets are available now. And – YES! – now is the time to get your badges for CIFF 2024\, Wed. Nov. 6 – Sun. Nov. 10.

SUMMARY:"My Penguin Friend" Free Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:A sweeping family adventure\, My Penguin Friend is a triumphant tale of friendship between a lonely father and a little lost penguin who recharges his spirit and heals his family with an unshakable\, ocean-crossing loyalty. Humble fisherman João (International star Jean Reno) has turned away from the world in the wake of tragedy. But when he discovers a penguin drifting alone in the ocean\, drenched in oil from a spill\, his first instinct is to help. To his wife’s (Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza) dismay\, he not only rescues the sea creature\, but takes the flightless bird under his wing. For the first time in years João starts to feel joy\, even if he cannot fathom just how unbreakable a bond is being formed. When the penguin suddenly disappears back into the immense wilds of the ocean\, João believes it is impossible that he will ever see his friend again. But thousands of miles away\, the penguin is caught in misadventures of his own\, determined to use his unique GPS-like powers to find his way back to the place he now considers home. Based on an emotional true story that riveted the world and filmed on the spectacular coasts of Brazil and Argentina\, My Penguin Friend is a tale that traverses the magic of the ocean\, the beauty of nature\, and the transformative power of love. \nSeating is not guaranteed\, so arrive early to secure your spot in line! \n5:00pm Line opens\n5:30pm Theater doors open\n6:00pm Film presentation begins\nPLEASE READ\n\nGeneral Public Seating is open on a first come basis.  Although there are plenty of seats in the Village main theater we recommend arriving early.\nSaving seats will not be allowed so please make sure your whole party enters the theater at the same time.

SUMMARY:Imperial Beach’s Sun & Sea Festival
DESCRIPTION:A Gigantic Monument Castle\, Street Fair\, Kids-n-Kastles Competition and Live Entertainment \nOne of San Diego County’s most beloved traditions and the largest local festival held annually on the sand at Portwood Pier Plaza is back this year – with a few changes. The most notable will be the gigantic “Sandcastle City”-style monument castle without the typical sandcastle competition\, though there will be a Kids-n-Kastles competition\, according to co-chair Shirley Nakawatase. “We all loved the master’s competition\, but since the pandemic\, it’s been a challenge getting business sponsorships and new volunteers to help produce this large-scale event\,” she said. \nThis year’s Kids-n-Kastles competition will feature 15 teams and is sponsored by the Imperial Beach/South Bay Kiwanis. This year’s Sandcastle Ball is free and open to the public at Mike Hess Brewing Company on Seacoast Boulevard. Donations are requested for Rad Swag Bags (supplies are limited). \nEvent Co-Chair Sandi Crosby is part of the new wave of younger volunteer members. “Bringing new energy onto the committee is exciting\,” said Crosby. “I am looking forward to seeing the type of impact that they will make.” \nFRIDAY\, August 16 \n\nThe Sandcastle Ball will be held from 6 pm to midnight at Mike Hess Brewing 805 Ocean Ln\, Imperial Beach. Free admission\, all ages welcome. Donations are appreciated.\n\nSATURDAY\, August 17 \n\nThe “Mega” Castle will be crafted from 80 cubic yards of sand. Watch our progress at Pier Plaza from Thursday through Saturday. The best viewing days will be Friday and Saturday.\nMusic and Entertainment: Pier Plaza Stage – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Performers TBD\nKids-n-Kastles Competition: 9 a.m. arrival. Fifteen teams compete from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the sand just north of the Pier. Those interested can sign up at www.sunandseafestival.com.\n\nPhoto: Trina Frederiksen for The Coronado Times\nThe City of Imperial Beach is famous for sandcastles\, starting with the U.S. Open Sandcastle competition held on July 25\, 1981. The annual competition lasted for 31 years and ended in 2011. In 2012\, The San Diego Port District produced IB Kids Fest at Pier Plaza in June. This reignited the tradition of the original Imperial Beach celebration with a new Sun & Sea Festival in 2013 featuring a professional sand sculpture display and the children’s Kids ‘N Kastles competition. The festival format\, adopted by a large group of local volunteers\, stayed the same until the 2020 pandemic. In 2021\, organizers\, in partnership with the City of Imperial Beach and the San Diego Port District\, were able to continue the town’s love of sandcastles without the street festival. The event\, billed as Sandcastle City\, presented the largest sandcastle ever built on Imperial Beach’s Pier Plaza along with several smaller sand sculpture displays at local businesses for several weeks. The ninth annual Sun & Sea Festival held in July 2022 returned to the original festival format with a smaller sandcastle competition and a scaled-back street festival. The event took a one-year hiatus in 2023. \n2024 Sun & Sea Festival Seeks Sponsors\nThe festival committee is seeking sponsorship funding from regional and local businesses to uphold our tradition of hosting a free public event. “Imperial Beach is the home of the original sandcastle competition\, and it is part of our culture\,” said Mariko Nakawatase\, sponsorship chair. We are deeply grateful to our longtime sponsors\, many of whom continue to support us in 2024. Those who have signed up to date are: The Port of San Diego\, the City of Imperial Beach\, and EDCO. “We are thrilled to include local businesses who we are looking forward to working with\, they are Imperial Beach Community Clinic\, Dwayne Snyder Stucco \, WyYerd Fiber\, Ashley Ortega- Mortgage Lender\, Raising Cane’s\, Southbay Urgent Care\, and Pacific Realty Sales and Management. “We are always thankful for the support and look forward to collaborating with any business interested in joining us\,” adds Nakawatase. If you would like to participate as a sponsor\, please contact Mariko Nakawatase at marikonakawatase@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:CIFF Classic Film "The Natural"
DESCRIPTION:If you’re following the smokin’ hot San Diego Padres these days\, then you understand why Coronado Island Film Festival couldn’t resist bringing you the beloved 1983 baseball classic\, “The Natural\,” as its monthly Classic Movie selection for August. \nSee this inspiring film as it was meant to be seen: on the big screen at Coronado’s Village Theatre. Doors open at 5 p.m. for complimentary adult beverages\, followed at 5:30 by a vintage cartoon and the feature presentation. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at coronadofilmfest.com. \nThe stellar cast includes Robert Redford\, Robert Duvall\, Glenn Close\, Kim Basinger\, Wilford Brimley\, Barbara Hershey\, Robert Prosky\, and Richard Farnsworth. The film is based on Bernard Malamud’s 1952 novel and was directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson (“Rain Man\,” 1988). \nIt was nominated for four Academy Awards\, including Best Supporting Actress for Glenn Close. \nFilm critics have noted that\, unlike most Hollywood actors who have starred as baseball players down through the years\, Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs in the 1983 classic “The Natural\,” actually looks the part! \nRedford\, who celebrated his 88th birthday on August 18\, was 47 when he filmed “The Natural\,” portraying Hobbs at ages 19 and 35. Too old for the part\, yes\, but his boyish good looks and genuine athletic ability make it all work.

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Joshua White Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 20\, the Joshua White Trio will be performing The Music of Johnny Mercer. \n\nJoshua White is one of the music scene’s most creative and technically accomplished pianists. Praised by legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock as having “immense talent” and lauded for his “daring and courageous approach to improvisation … on the cutting edge of innovation”\, Joshua has distinguished himself as a formidable leader of distinct voice among his peers.  Born and raised in Southern California\, Joshua received early training at the piano and developed rapidly through rigorous study of both Western European Classical literature and the Black American Music traditions. Shortly after placing in the top two as a finalist of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition\, Joshua began concertizing as a soloist and musical collaborator all over the world — and continues to maintain an active touring schedule throughout Europe\, Africa\, and Asia.  Joshua White can most often be heard with his critically-acclaimed TRIO (featuring Karl McComas-Reichl\, bass & Tyler Kreutel\, drums)\, as well as these musical ensembles: The Mark Dresser Quintet\, Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble\, The Daniel Rosenboom Quartet\, Steph Richards & Super Sense\, and LANCASTER (featuring Eric Revis\, bass; Jeff Parker\, guitar; & Guillermo Brown\, drums). \nJazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer\, educator\, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet\, Gilbert Castellanos\, Charles McPherson\, Steph Johnson and a host of others.  Rob has released six recordings as a leader\,  “Bass is the Space – Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White\, Steph Johnson\, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is “So In Love” — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter\, Joni Mitchell\, and others. \nTyler Kreutel is a drummer/percussionist based in the Southern California area. Born and raised in San Diego\, California\, he took up the drums at the age of 12 in his middle school jazz band and hasn’t looked back since. Tyler graduated from The San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his Bachelors in Music Performance at California State University Long Beach. While in college Tyler began playing professionally in both the San Diego and Los Angeles area and has been doing so ever since. Tyler has had the great fortune of playing with many outstanding musicians including Gilbert Castellanos\, Charles McPherson\, Henry Franklin\, Joshua White\, Marshall Hawkins\, Steve Cotter and is one of the most in demand drummers in Southern California. He has taught at both The Orange County School of the Arts and Downey High School and is currently teaching at YLJC.

SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: "Postcards From The Edge" by Carrie Fisher
DESCRIPTION:The Spoilers Book Club reads books that have been turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \n \n“Postcards From The Edge” by Carrie Fisher\n\nWhen we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale\, she’s feeling like “something on the bottom of someone’s shoe\, and not even someone interesting.” Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation\, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a “drug hospital.” \nJust as Fisher’s first film role—the precocious teenager in Shampoo—echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing\, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. This stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne’s vivid\, excruciatingly funny experiences inside the clinic and as she comes to terms with life in the outside world. “Postcards from the Edge” is more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers—and delights—of all our addictions\, from money and success to sex and insecurity. \nFilm\n“Postcards from the Edge” (1990)\nRated R\nRuntime: 1h 41m

SUMMARY:Spielberg’s 1998 Masterpiece\, "Saving Private Ryan"
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for eleven\, and winner of five\, Academy Awards\, “Saving Private Ryan” is considered by many to be the greatest war movie ever made. Presented by Coronado Island Film Festival as part of the popular monthly Classic Film Series\, it will screen at Coronado’s Village Theatre\, 820 Orange Ave.\, on Wednesday\, September 25. \nDoors will open at 5 pm for a Meet and Greet with complimentary wine\, followed by the feature presentation at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and are available at coronadofilmfest.com. \nDirector Steven Spielberg won the Oscar for his work\, as did cinematographer Janusz Kaminski. The opening 24-minute battle scene on Omaha Beach cost $12 million to film over a four-week period\, using 1500 background actors\, and is thought to be one of the greatest pieces of combat cinema ever made. \nThe film is set in Normandy\, France\, and stars Tom Hanks as Capt. John Miller\, who has been ordered to locate a young private from Iowa named James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) behind enemy lines\, to send him safely home to his grieving mother after his three brothers have all been killed in action. \nThe cast includes Edward Burns as rebellious soldier Richard Reiben\, Tom Sizemore as Mike Horvath\, Miller’s great friend and second-in-command\, and Jeremy Davies as Timothy Upham\, the French and German interpreter. \nAlso watch for the familiar faces of Ted Danson\, Paul Giamatti\, and Bryan Cranston. The music by John Williams is just perfect. \nAs one reviewer put it in 1998\, “It gives us a million reasons why no one should go to war and one very powerful reason to go to war. It’s a soul-numbing\, realistic depiction of what our grandfathers\, fathers\, uncles\, brothers and sons have faced in humanity’s darkest moments. Not just in WWII\, but in any war. No one can see this movie without being altered in some way.” \nTickets are available at coronadofilmfest.com. And – while you’re at it – now is the time to get your badges for CIFF 2024\, Wed. Nov. 6 – Sun. Nov. 10. \nOn October 30\, be sure to join us at our next classic film offering for another of Mel Brooks’ adventures into pure wackiness\, “Bride of Frankenstein\,” as we celebrate Halloween together.

SUMMARY:FILM FORUM CORONADO: "The Spiritualist"
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival\, presents FILM FORUM CORONADO\, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s Winn Room. Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards\, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. \n \nOctober 2: The Spiritualist (1948\, Approved\, 80 min) \nFrom out of the surf it came… a familiar voice… a voice that belonged to the afterlife. John Alton’s stunning cinematography elevates this supernaturally-tinged\, moody masterwork. A psychic (Turhan Bey) insinuates himself into the cliffside mansion of a wealthy widow by convincing her he can communicate with spirits. With Cathy O’Donnell and Lynn Bari.
