SUMMARY:Holiday Concert with the Daneen Wilburn Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Recording artist Daneen Wilburn\, featuring Grammy winner Kamau Kenyatta on piano\, Richard Sellers on drums\, and Cecil Mcbee Jr on bass\, performing your favorite holiday classics with special arrangements by Kamau Kenyatta.\n\n\nDaneen Wilburn was born and raised in San Diego. She began singing at the age of three and by the time she was seven\, she was the lead singer in the family band that included her talented brothers and sisters. At age 19\, Daneen was performing at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Her performance led to an invitation to sing at the legendary Hollywood Bowl for its Easter Sunrise Service. Soon after\, she was sharing the stage with some of gospel music’s biggest names\, including Darryl Coley\, Edwin Hawkins and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. \nIn 1990\, Daneen married and began a family. She decided to leave music to focus on her children\, a decision she’s never regretted. However\, in 2013\, Daneen returned to the music scene\, with a soldout concert\, at 98 Bottles in San Diego\, where she combined her gospel roots with a soulful jazz vibe. In 2014\, on Jackie Robinson Day\, she was invited by the San Diego Padres to sing the national anthem. Padres’ owner Robert Fowler was so moved by her performance that he later asked Daneen to sing for the memorial service of Padres legend Tony Gwynn at Petco Park. Her rendition of “Amazing Grace” uplifted an audience of thousands that included baseball legends Reggie Jackson\, Steve Garvey\, Trevor Hoffman\, Joe Torre\, and sports announcer Bob Costas. The next morning’s front page headline in the San Diego Union Tribune simply read\, “Amazing Grace.” Since then\, Daneen has performed for former First Lady Laura Bush\, and at the wedding of soccer superstar\, and gold medalist\, Alex Morgan. She recorded her debut\, self-titled album\, produced by Grammy winner Kamau Kenyatta\, which was released in the summer of 2017. \nKamau Kenyatta is a Grammy award-winning producer and arranger. Kamau is a teaching professor at the University of California San Diego Music Department. He was honored with the prestigious Barbara J. and Paul D. Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award at UCSD in May 2009. Originally from Detroit\, his versatility comes from his early exposure to a vast array of musical styles. \nKamau has worked with jazz greats such as Hubert Laws\, Donald Byrd\, Yusef Lateef\, Jim Pepper\, and Earl Klugh. World tours have taken him to over 20 countries and include stints with The Supremes\, Carl Anderson (from Jesus Christ Superstar)\, Oscar Brown\, Jr.\, SWV\, Silk\, the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and New Kids on The Block. Kamau has also collaborated with Hubert Laws in writing the score for “Small Steps\, Big Strides\,” a documentary concerning the history of African-American film. He wrote and supervised music for “The Dawn At My Back\,” a Sundance Film Festival award-winning interactive DVD-ROM memoir. In 2015\, Kamau scored the film\, “Spirits Of Rebellion\,” by Zeinabu Irene Davis. \nIn 2016\, he completed the score for the Gregory Porter biopic\, “Don’t Forget Your Music.” The film was released in the UK in the fall of 2016. Kamau served as musical director for Blues Schoolhouse\, an educational program for middle-school children\, at the International House Of Blues (San Diego). In 2009\, Kenyatta joined the Music Department at California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA). He served as Department Co-Chair from 2010-11. Destiny\, a recording that showcases Kenyatta as pianist\, composer and producer\, was released in the spring of 2007. The Elegant Sadness\, his most recent recording in the same roles was released in the fall of 2019. Kamau produced Water and Be Good for vocalist Gregory Porter on the Motema label – both were nominated for Grammy awards. In 2013\, Kenyatta served as associate producer and arranger for Porter’s Blue Note Records debut disc Liquid Spirit. In February 2014\, this project won a Grammy in the “Best Jazz Vocal Album” category. 2016 saw releases of his production projects included Gregory Porter’s Take Me To The Alley\, Ed Motta’s Perpetual Gateways\, and Steph Johnson’s Music Is Art. In February 2017\, Kamau won a Grammy for his co-production and arrangements on Take Me To The Alley in the “Best Jazz Vocal Album” category. In 2018\, his production of Uncovered Soul by Kathy Kosins was released. Production projects released in 2019 include a self-titled project for vocalist Daneen Wilburn and Intuition: Songs From The Minds Of Women for Alicia Olatuja. In 2020\, Kamau’s production of Paulette McWilliams’ A Woman’s Story was released. His production of Allan Harris’ Kate’s Place was released in early 2021. \nCecil McBee Jr. is a very talented musician and bassist. Cecil has performed with many of the top bands in the Southern California area. Cecil has also performed with many pop and jazz super stars such as Ike Turner\, Patrice Rushen\, Donna Summer Band\, Craig Phillinganes\, Hubert Laws\, Chico Hamilton\, Steve Laurie\, Fat Burger Band\, Dr Dave\, and others. \nRichard Sellers has been playing drums professionally for over 20 years. In that time\, he has performed with countless groups and ensembles in a variety of styles\, including straight-ahead jazz\, avant-garde jazz\, Brazilian\, Latin\, funk and hip-hop. \nIn addition\, he has worked extensively as a teacher\, applying his unique rhythmic approach and meticulous technical methods. A native of Valencia\, California\, Richard received early\ntraining from Stewart Fischer (brother of jazz giant Clare)\, Earl Palmer\, and Joe Porcaro. The support of such greats prepared him for his move to San Diego nearly six years ago\, when he began to make frequent performance appearances at San Diego State University\, and gigged incessantly with the best professionals in town.

SUMMARY:Holiday Sing-A-Long
DESCRIPTION:Get into the holiday spirit with a Holiday Sing-a-Long with Marilyn Rees\, Rob Taylor and Mary Taylor! Bring your singing voice or simply enjoy the music with hot cocoa and cookies. \n\nPerformer Biographies: \nBorn in New York City\, Marilyn Rees’s father was in the Navy and her family moved several times. They landed in Coronado in 1955\, and she graduated from Coronado High School in ‘57 and went off to Stanford University. She spent several years traveling to Mexico City\, Vienna\, and after graduation\, Maracaibo\, Venezuela. Eventually\, she ended up back in Northern California\, got married\, had two children\, and worked in the Gifted Program and started up the computer program in the Lafayette School District. She moved back to Coronado and has lived here full-time since 2000. Marilyn played every Monday night at Vigilucci’s and now plays weekly at Emerald C Gallery on Saturdays. \nMary Munger Taylor has traveled throughout the United States and Europe\, acting and singing in venues ranging from opera to summer stock to Broadway. Personal favorites include starring on Broadway as Sally Bowles opposite Joel Grey in Hal Prince’s 20th anniversary revival of Cabaret. Since that time Mary’s appearances have included the creation of the role of Eve in the late AJ Antoon’s Genesis at Joe Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival. She can be heard as Mae Jones on the London Records release of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene\, and acted as Drama Coach on that company’s recording of Marc Blitztein’s Regina. Since moving to Coronado with her husband of 28 years (Robert Taylor\, CHS ’62)\, Mary has appeared nightly at San Diego’s premiere theatrical institution\, The Old Globe\, as House Manager. \nRobert Taylor grew up in Coronado before heading off to MIT in the 1960s. After more than five decades away\, he returned to his beloved hometown after retiring from his most recent position as Vice President of Systems at Morgan Stanley in New York City. Coming home brought him back to his roots and all-time passion — music. In 2014\, Rob performed in the La Jolla Playhouse’s much-acclaimed The Hunchback of Notre Dame. San Diego appearances with the San Diego Master Chorale include the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience (2018)\, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2019)\, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2018) and Star Wars: A New Hope (2018). He sings with the San Diego Master Chorale\, the Christ Church Choir and occasionally with Sacra Profana\, San Diego’s premiere professional a capella chorale. As current President of Coronado Rotary (2021-22)\, Rob relishes “giving back” to the vibrant Coronado community. When he can find time\, he also enjoys tutoring local middle and high school students in math\, as well as his ongoing vocal studies with San Diego Opera’s Michael Sokol.
