SUMMARY:"Alice by Heart"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Musical Theatre and Drama Conservatory brings Alice by Heart to the stage. Alice by Heart is a touching musical which explores themes of grief\, loss\, and first love against the backdrop of World War II’s London Blitz. \nThe performance opens in the Coronado Performing Arts Center\, 650 D Avenue\, on Friday\, Oct. 17 at 7 pm\, with additional showtimes on Saturday\, Oct. 18 at 7 pm\, Sunday\, Oct. 19 at 2 pm\, Friday\, Oct. 24 at 7 pm\, and Saturday\, Oct. 25 at 7 pm. \nThe story follows Alice Spencer and her dying friend\, Alfred\, as they seek refuge in an underground tube station and use their love for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to escape the harsh realities of war. The musical celebrates the power of imagination and friendship to help people find the courage to move forward. While the original Alice in Wonderland is a fantasy\, Alice by Heart uses the story as a metaphor for growing up\, coping with death\, and navigating first love in a time of crisis. \nDirector Barbara Wolf shares\, “Alice By Heart is one of my new favorite musicals. My students introduced it to me two years ago\, and I fell in love with it immediately! It is written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater\, who wrote the musical “Spring Awakening\,” which is profound in its meaning and beautiful in its story and music. We are all very excited to be rehearsing this wonderful musical and then to share it.” \nAlice By Heart is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. \nTickets are available at cosafoundation.org. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Sophie Webber
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 pm in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 24\, we will have Sophie Webber on the cello. \n \n\n“outstanding… every note has meaning rather as a look or a touch does; the resulting conversations she has with the music are endlessly absorbing… Her subjective narrative suggests the freedom with which Pablo Casals brought the music back to life a century ago.” ~ LAURENCE VITTES |  GRAMOPHONE \nCellist Dr. Sophie Webber\, whose “every note has meaning rather as a look or a touch does” (Gramophone) is an internationally acclaimed soloist\, chamber musician\, arts activist\, and educator. Praised as “an exceptional and creative musician” (Interlude) and “sublime to hear” (Time Out Chicago)\, she has released three critically acclaimed albums\, “Escape: Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello” (2018)\, “B2C: Bach to Choir” (2020\, featuring Bach’s Cello Suites Nos.1 and 3\, alongside Sophie’s original choral accompaniment with vocables by former Kings Singer baritone and arranger\, Phil Lawson\, performed by the Chicago Choir of the Church of Ascension) and most recently\, “Roots: Transcriptions of Romantic Works for Cello and Piano” with pianist Ines Irawati (2022). \nHer former teachers include Janos Starker\, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi\, and Helga Winold at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music\, and Richard Markson at Trinity College of Music\, London\, from where she graduated with a First Class Honors degree\, as well as the Sir John Barbirolli memorial prize for cello. \nA dedicated educator\, Sophie has served as cello faculty at Southeast Missouri State University\, Jacobs School of Music Summer Clinic\, Oxford Cello School\, Trinity College of Music Junior Department\, Lake Forest College and the Music Institute of Chicago. She is a keen music theorist and pianist\, and held a position as Music Theory Instructor at Indiana University for four years. She has taught a variety of university level courses\, and is frequently invited to give guest masterclasses at universities across the States. Following the pandemic’s push to move more music teaching online\, Dr Sophie has also given regular online cello lessons and classes for the past five years. In 2024\, Sophie began teaching an online cello course\, “Dr Sophie Cello Lab\,” including group and individual instruction\, international guest cellist clinicians\, and with a strong community component. \nSophie’s students have served as section and principal cellists in the Chicago and San Diego Youth Symphony Orchestras\, have won or been placed in regional and national competitions (such as State Youth Concerto Competitions\, the Society of American Musicians Competition\, MidWest Young Artists Discover National Chamber Music Competition\, Confucius Chinese Fine Arts Society Competition\, and the Walgreen National Concerto Competition) and have gone on to study cello performance at some of the nation’s top music schools. \nIn 2009\, she founded Fused Muse Ensemble\, an IL non-profit with a mission to amplify voices too often left unheard through music and mixed media. \nSophie’s music has been featured on BBC Radio 3\, Southern California’s Classical KUSC 91.5FM\, Chicago’s WFMT 98.7FM\, Seattle’s King FM 98.1\, Iowa Public Radio\, Tampa Bay (Florida)’s WUSF Public Media\, Rochester (New York)’s WXXI Classical 91.5\, North Carolina’s WCPE The Classical Station 89.7FM\, Portland’s All Classical 89.9 KQAC FM\, amongst others.

SUMMARY:Locally-made "Serenity Now" movie screening
DESCRIPTION:Cast\, crew\, family\, friends and the public are invited to this complimentary screening. \n \nJoin the local cast and crew for the world premiere of “Serenity Now\,” a short film about a frantic dog mom who hits up the local pet wellness spa for some wacky cures…with the hope of taming her humping hound before love slips away. The special screening will take place on Sunday\, Oct. 26 from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Winn Room. \nThe movie was written and created by a class of novice filmmaking students and produced entirely in Coronado. The class met at the Coronado Library this past summer for once a week production instruction. \nAfter the classes concluded\, the dedicated new filmmakers continued their learning experience during four weeks of production and three weeks of editing\, post production and creation of the final cut of the movie. \nThe story revolves around an off-the-wall pet wellness spa and its owner Sage\, who is convinced she can cure every dog’s ailments through new age potions and remedies. \nBut things get a bit complicated when Lila and her dog Wilbur pay a visit to the SERENITY NOW wellness spa with the hope of curing the pup of his boyfriend-repelling and amorous antics. \nAfter repeated attempts\, Sage and her chief canine therapist\, Dr. Donatella\, simply cannot cure Wilbur. Lila is devastated. She loves her dog – but wants a boyfriend. \nIn a last ditch effort to ‘fix’ Wilbur\, Lila hatches a sure-fire plan which will not only help her and Wilbur\, but change the lives of Sage and Dr. Donatella forever. \n“Serenity Now” features incredible aerial views of Coronado\, beach and downtown scenes\, and talented local actors including some of your friends! For most of the cast and crew\, this was their first movie production and a true learning experience. \nThe production team is excited to share their finished film with you\, along with stories of their on-set experiences. Cast and crew will also answer questions and provide tips on how to make your own movie on your phone. Refreshments will be served. \nCast\, crew\, family\, friends and the public are invited to this complimentary screening.

SUMMARY:CoSA DigArts Horror Nights: Whispers in the Woods
DESCRIPTION:It screens and causes screams at the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Digital Arts Conservatory’s Horror Nights taking place on Tuesday\, October 28 and Thursday\, October 30. For two chilling and thrilling nights\, students will showcase their A+ work focused on the theme: Creepy Campfire stories – ranging from ghost stories to monster and stalker lore\, it’s all happening at the Coronado High School Black Box Theatre\, 650 D Avenue from 6 to 7:30 pm each night. \nTo prepare for the project\, students chose a campfire story to represent their form of digital art that includes their unconventional storytelling and suspenseful audience appeal. Students explored how campfire stories can be brought to life through creativity and horror. \n“Students are excited to test their skills in a horror genre\,” said Anna Woerman\, CoSA DigArts Conservatory Director and Teacher. “They love horror and retelling the genre in their own way. Students get to be creative within the theme and they like to push the limits\, within a PG-13 appropriateness\,” added Woerman. \nHorror Nights\, now in its 16th year\, is a much-loved DigArts tradition. Since horror night occurs in October\, students are tasked with beginning their projects as soon as they start school. They begin with sketches and brainstorming\, then they storyboard\, film\, animate\, or begin to design in Illustrator or Photoshop in anticipation of their show October 28 and 30. \nThe event is recommended for middle school aged children or older. Concessions will also be available for sale. \nTickets are $10 for adults\, $5 for students\, staff\, seniors\, and military and are on sale now at cosasandiego.com or can be purchased prior to each performance.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for complimentary wine\, followed by a vintage cartoon and the feature at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at coronadofilmfest.com. \nNicholson plays writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrence\, who travels with his wife (Duvall) and young son (Lloyd) to accept a caretaker position at the remote Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rocky Mountains while it’s closed for the winter. Upon arrival\, Jack is informed that a previous caretaker\, Charles Grady\, had killed his wife\, two young daughters\, and himself at the hotel a decade ago. Creepy enough for you? Well wait\, there’s more! Son Danny\, who it turns out is clairvoyant\, starts having disturbing visions\, Jack has writer’s block and violent outbursts and starts drinking again\, then descends into complete insanity (as only Jack Nicholson can do). \nAlert: THIS IS NOT A “FAMILY FILM”! But it IS a chilling\, majestic piece of cinematic fright for the ages\, brilliantly written\, directed\, shot and acted\, and the perfect scary movie you asked for! \nNext month: “Nobody’s Fool”\, the comedy drama starring Paul Newman\, Bruce Willis\, and Jessica Tandy on Wednesday\, November 26\, the day before Thanksgiving. This is considered the ultimate “Thanksgiving movie.” Bring the fam. Tickets are on sale now. \n  \nIn the meantime\, we invite you to celebrate Ten Incredible Years of the Coronado Island Film Festival\, November 5–9!\nExperience over 130 films\, from powerful documentaries to Oscar contenders\, along with Tribute Awards\, parties\, and free screenings at the Coronado Public Library.\nLearn more and get your tickets and passes at coronadofilmfest.com.\n

Continuing the trend\, its second performance on Sunday\, November 16 at 3 pm\, promises more excitement with compositions by Handel\, Astor Piazzolla\, Fritz Kreisler\, Dmitri Shostakovich\, and Alfred Schnittke. Located at Coronado’s Resurrection Lutheran Church\, 1111 5th St.\, the concert is free\, though donations are appreciated. \nThe brainchild of Musica Vitale’s founder and Music Director\, Elena Vizuet\, the series consists of vocalists from Musica Vitale\, Coronado’s only professional vocal ensemble. \nAccompanying the vocalists will be the Ghukasyan String orchestra from Ensenada\, led by founder and first violinist Nonna Alakhverdova\, violin professor at the Autonomous Ensenada University\, Baja California. Rounding up the ensemble are pianist Olena Galytska\, second violinist Eric Ghukasyan\, and cellist Ruben Ghukasyan. \nAs Vizuet describes it\, “This eclectic program offers something for everyone! Don’t miss a chance to immerse yourself in a beautiful sound of string instruments right in your neighborhood!”
