SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Lori Bell
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 19\, we will have Lori Bell on the flute. She will be playing From Bach to Bebop\, including songs by Bach\, Telemann\, Piazolla\, Debussy\, Hoover\, and more. \n\nAcclaimed flutist and a three time Global Music Award recipient\, Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego\, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. \nIn 2016 Lori paid heartfelt tribute to her family and birthplace on her critically acclaimed album ‘Brooklyn Dreaming’ earning four star ratings from Jazz Journal UK\, Jazz Times\, the Los Angeles Times (four and a half stars) and Downbeat\, which chose it as “Best Albums of 2016.” Huffington Post also chose ‘Brooklyn Dreaming’ for their “Best of Jazz 2016”. Bill Milkowski wrote in the March 2016 issue of Downbeat: “Bell flaunts prodigious chops on both C flute and alto flute\, though her pen might be mightier than her sword. Her originals all reveal a wide harmonic palette\, a sophisticated rhythmic sensibility and a refined sense of dynamics\, along with an urge to swing.” Veteran jazz critic Scott Yanow chose it as one of his Top 25 Best jazz CD’s of 2016. It also won a Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement for compositions and arrangements. \nHer most recent album project released in 2024 is a tribute to the legendary saxophonist and composer\, Joe Henderson. The Lori Bell Quartet – Recorda Me; Remembering Joe Henderson was selected at Jazz Congress in NYC for Jukebox Jury\, received international press\, and was selected Top 10 Jazz Critics Poll in Cadence Magazine\, Top 10 Essential Releases by jazz critic Scott Yanow\, and Best Jazz Albums of 2024 in All About Jazz. \nLori has toured in Asia\, including Singapore and Hong Kong. She has also performed in high profile ensemble settings at The Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, SOKA Performing Arts Center\, The Wadsworth Theatre at UCLA\, Birdland NYC\, The Blue Note NYC\, SFJAZZ in the Joe Henderson Lab\, and most recently\, on a project of jazz arrangements and classical compositions for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Library. She has performed three times at the Gala for the National Flute Association. \nEqually fluent in both jazz and classical idioms\, Lori is devoted to chamber music: the breadth of classical repertoire for flute and piano she has recorded and performed with her stellar musical partner\, Diane Snodgrass\, especially showing that commitment. The album ‘Night Soliloquy’ features 20th century French and American repertoire. “While there are many attractive features to Bell’s performances\, the most important one is that she is a storyteller. This CD is highly recommended not only for the repertoire but for the captivating performances by Bell and Snodgrass.” ~ Flute Talk Magazine \n“Lori Bell is a Pearl Artist\, but I hadn’t heard of her before. She is a fantastic player and the run down to a low B in her own arrangement of the Boulanger will be a delight for any flutist to hear.” ~ American Record Guide \nLori has also performed with the International Orchestra\, Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra\, and various chamber ensembles including ‘Night People’ featuring music by composer Joe Garrison which she produced three albums with. In addition to her global renown as a performer and recording artist\, Lori is a respected force in music education. She is currently on the faculty as an Instructor of Flute and studio artist teacher at San Diego State University and over the years\, has privately taught hundreds of students of all ages in flute\, piano (her secondary instrument)\, classical technique\, jazz improvisation\, theory\, composition and arranging with a focus on artistry and imagery at her studio in San Diego. \nLori has taught master classes for the New York Flute Club\, Columbia University\, Mannes Music Conservatory NYC\, The New School NYC\, San Jose State University\, Chico State\, San Diego State University\, UCLA\, Utah State University\, The National Flute Association 1989\, 2003\, 2016\, University Wisconsin Green Bay\, San Diego Flute Guild\, in Hong Kong and Singapore.

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Sophie Webber
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 pm in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 24\, we will have Sophie Webber on the cello. \n \n\n“outstanding… every note has meaning rather as a look or a touch does; the resulting conversations she has with the music are endlessly absorbing… Her subjective narrative suggests the freedom with which Pablo Casals brought the music back to life a century ago.” ~ LAURENCE VITTES |  GRAMOPHONE \nCellist Dr. Sophie Webber\, whose “every note has meaning rather as a look or a touch does” (Gramophone) is an internationally acclaimed soloist\, chamber musician\, arts activist\, and educator. Praised as “an exceptional and creative musician” (Interlude) and “sublime to hear” (Time Out Chicago)\, she has released three critically acclaimed albums\, “Escape: Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello” (2018)\, “B2C: Bach to Choir” (2020\, featuring Bach’s Cello Suites Nos.1 and 3\, alongside Sophie’s original choral accompaniment with vocables by former Kings Singer baritone and arranger\, Phil Lawson\, performed by the Chicago Choir of the Church of Ascension) and most recently\, “Roots: Transcriptions of Romantic Works for Cello and Piano” with pianist Ines Irawati (2022). \nHer former teachers include Janos Starker\, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi\, and Helga Winold at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music\, and Richard Markson at Trinity College of Music\, London\, from where she graduated with a First Class Honors degree\, as well as the Sir John Barbirolli memorial prize for cello. \nA dedicated educator\, Sophie has served as cello faculty at Southeast Missouri State University\, Jacobs School of Music Summer Clinic\, Oxford Cello School\, Trinity College of Music Junior Department\, Lake Forest College and the Music Institute of Chicago. She is a keen music theorist and pianist\, and held a position as Music Theory Instructor at Indiana University for four years. She has taught a variety of university level courses\, and is frequently invited to give guest masterclasses at universities across the States. Following the pandemic’s push to move more music teaching online\, Dr Sophie has also given regular online cello lessons and classes for the past five years. In 2024\, Sophie began teaching an online cello course\, “Dr Sophie Cello Lab\,” including group and individual instruction\, international guest cellist clinicians\, and with a strong community component. \nSophie’s students have served as section and principal cellists in the Chicago and San Diego Youth Symphony Orchestras\, have won or been placed in regional and national competitions (such as State Youth Concerto Competitions\, the Society of American Musicians Competition\, MidWest Young Artists Discover National Chamber Music Competition\, Confucius Chinese Fine Arts Society Competition\, and the Walgreen National Concerto Competition) and have gone on to study cello performance at some of the nation’s top music schools. \nIn 2009\, she founded Fused Muse Ensemble\, an IL non-profit with a mission to amplify voices too often left unheard through music and mixed media. \nSophie’s music has been featured on BBC Radio 3\, Southern California’s Classical KUSC 91.5FM\, Chicago’s WFMT 98.7FM\, Seattle’s King FM 98.1\, Iowa Public Radio\, Tampa Bay (Florida)’s WUSF Public Media\, Rochester (New York)’s WXXI Classical 91.5\, North Carolina’s WCPE The Classical Station 89.7FM\, Portland’s All Classical 89.9 KQAC FM\, amongst others.

SUMMARY:"Alice by Heart"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Musical Theatre and Drama Conservatory brings Alice by Heart to the stage. Alice by Heart is a touching musical which explores themes of grief\, loss\, and first love against the backdrop of World War II’s London Blitz. \nThe performance opens in the Coronado Performing Arts Center\, 650 D Avenue\, on Friday\, Oct. 17 at 7 pm\, with additional showtimes on Saturday\, Oct. 18 at 7 pm\, Sunday\, Oct. 19 at 2 pm\, Friday\, Oct. 24 at 7 pm\, and Saturday\, Oct. 25 at 7 pm. \nThe story follows Alice Spencer and her dying friend\, Alfred\, as they seek refuge in an underground tube station and use their love for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to escape the harsh realities of war. The musical celebrates the power of imagination and friendship to help people find the courage to move forward. While the original Alice in Wonderland is a fantasy\, Alice by Heart uses the story as a metaphor for growing up\, coping with death\, and navigating first love in a time of crisis. \nDirector Barbara Wolf shares\, “Alice By Heart is one of my new favorite musicals. My students introduced it to me two years ago\, and I fell in love with it immediately! It is written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater\, who wrote the musical “Spring Awakening\,” which is profound in its meaning and beautiful in its story and music. We are all very excited to be rehearsing this wonderful musical and then to share it.” \nAlice By Heart is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. \nTickets are available at cosafoundation.org. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.

The special screening will take place on Sunday\, Oct. 26 from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Winn Room. \nThe movie was written and created by a class of novice filmmaking students and produced entirely in Coronado. Lila is devastated. She loves her dog – but wants a boyfriend. \nIn a last ditch effort to ‘fix’ Wilbur\, Lila hatches a sure-fire plan which will not only help her and Wilbur\, but change the lives of Sage and Dr. Donatella forever. \n“Serenity Now” features incredible aerial views of Coronado\, beach and downtown scenes\, and talented local actors including some of your friends! For most of the cast and crew\, this was their first movie production and a true learning experience. \nThe production team is excited to share their finished film with you\, along with stories of their on-set experiences.
