SUMMARY:Brains and AI: The Future of Education and Learning
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, June 10 at 6:30 pm\, join the Coronado Public Library as we welcome UCSD’s Dr. Terrance Sejnowski who will share insights into the future impacts of AI on education and learning. Classrooms\, teachers\, lessons\, homework\, reading\, writing\, and arithmetic look the same today as they did when we were children\, what will the future bring to education? How will artificial intelligence (AI) and personal social robots shape the next generation? This lecture is based his personal experiences with “Learning How to Learn\,” a wildly popular Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)\, with 6 million viewers in 200 countries\, his insights from how brains learn\, and the recent developments in AI described in his book ChatGPT and the Future of AI. This free lecture is open to all. \nTerry Sejnowski received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins\, where he was a Professor of Biophysics. He currently holds the Francis Crick Chair at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and is a Distinguished Professor of Biology and Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California\, San Diego\, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. He also is the founding editor-in-chief of Neural Computation and is currently President of the Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation Board. In 1992\, Sejnowski co-authored The Computational Brain with Patricia Churchland and in 2002 the book Liars\, Lovers\, and Heroes; What the New Brain Science Reveals About How We Become Who We Are with Steven R. Quartz. His book\, The Deep Learning Revolution\, was published by the MIT Press in 2018.

SUMMARY:Darkroomers: Where We Wander exhibit opening reception
DESCRIPTION:Where We Wander is a collection of photographs created by members of the Darkroomers Photographic Club\, captured both close to home and around the world. \n \nTogether\, these images reflect the many ways we move through and observe the world around us. Some photographs come from distant places. Others were made in familiar neighborhoods\, quiet corners\, or everyday spaces. What connects them is the photographer’s attention to the moment. \nWherever we wander\, we are looking closely. We are noticing light\, place\, people\, details\, and stories. This exhibition celebrates the act of slowing down\, seeing with intention\, and appreciating the world through photography. \nAbout Darkroomers: The Darkroomers Photo Club (DRPC) is a photography club with a strong emphasis on printing photographs\, thoughtful critiques\, and creative growth. Quarterly photo challenges\, interclub competition\, photo field trips\, workshops\, and friendly camaraderie are the hallmark of the club. \nWe are a member of the Southern California Association of Camera Clubs (SCACC). The Darkroomers club meets monthly at the Photographic Arts Building in Balboa Park adjacent to Spanish Village. These meetings are held on the 1st\, 3rd\, and sometimes a 5th Wednesday of the month. Social hour begins at 6pm and the meeting begins at 7pm. \nThe club holds quarterly challenges and annual interclub competitions with members of other SCACC member clubs. SUMMARY:We Must All Hang Together: How Revolutionary Americans imagined the United States into being
DESCRIPTION:During the American Revolution\, Americans were not only fighting for independence. They were also trying to imagine what their new nation would look like. Revolutionary leaders such as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington helped promote powerful visual symbols — from flags and seals to allegorical figures like Liberty — that expressed the ideals of the emerging United States and helped unite a diverse population around a shared identity. At the same time\, writers such as the enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley and radical voices like Abigail Adams used words and imagery to challenge Americans to think about who should be included in this new nation. This talk explores how a wide range of Americans helped create the symbols and ideas that allowed people to imagine — and ultimately bring into being — the United States. \n\nEdward J. Blum is a professor of nineteenth-century United States History in the History Department at San Diego State University. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. His research\, writing\, and teaching involve politics\, constitutionalism\, war\, society\, and culture in the United States from the founding of the nation through the era of the Civil War. He has particular interests in how numerical information\, data\, demography\, statistics\, and the Census play roles in shaping the course of United States history. \nProfessor Blum is committed to both top-notch scholarship and reaching out to the broader public. He is the author and co-author of several books including War is All Hell: The Nature of Evil and the Civil War (2021)\, Reforging the White Republic: Race\, Religion\, and American Nationalism\, 1865-1898 (2005; reissued 2015)\, W. E. B. Du Bois\, American Prophet (2007)\, and The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America (2012). For these\, he has won the C. Vann Woodward Prize from the Southern Historical Association\,  the Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship\, the Gustave O. Arlt Award in the Humanities\, and the John T. Hubbell Prize for best article published in Civil War History in 2015. \nPublicly\, Blum has authored pieces for the New York Times\, CNN\, the Atlantic Monthly\, Newsweek\, and many other outlets. He is also the Project Director for the American Revolution and Constitution History Project at SDSU\, which looks to energize civic and patriotic reflection in San Diego.

Enjoy inspiring patriotic music performed by Westwind Brass while mingling with friends and neighbors over complimentary drinks and light bites. \nCHA’s Flag Mural Project was funded through the Coronado Community Foundation’s Fall 2025 Arts & Culture Grant Program\, which invested in projects that celebrate creativity\, inspire learning\, and strengthen Coronado’s cultural landscape. Composed of over 200 hand-painted tiles created by Coronado residents\, the mural represents a wide range of backgrounds\, experiences\, and organizations\, and celebrates the many individuals and groups that contribute to community life. Participants included many local organizations as well as individual residents and community leaders\, including representatives of local government\, the military\, civic organizations\, public safety\, education\, and faith-based communities. Together the tiles form a visual representation of the values of America as well as the relationships and shared experiences that make Coronado unique. The mural also reflects a central theme of both the exhibit and the broader America250 commemoration: history is not only something we inherit but something we continue to create. \nCome raise a glass as we salute our nation’s past and celebrate our shared community. Guided by her lifelong belief in “beauty and nature above all else\,” the New Jersey native and clinical social worker turned her beach walks along Silver Strand into a monumental grassroots movement. As a founder of the Silver Strand Beautification Project (SSBP)\, Liza united local residents\, city leaders\, state agencies\, and the U.S. Navy to revitalize public spaces. Her vision and tenacity led to landmark achievements\, including the award-winning Nature’s Bridge to Discovery interactive trail\, the undergrounding of coastal utilities\, five landscaped highway medians\, the unique Silver Strand bus shelters\, and the creation of Grand Caribe Shoreline Park. Today\, Liza continues her advocacy\, inspiring the community to protect and preserve these scenic coastal treasures for future generations. \n \nDavid R. Landon is a native of Guilford\, Connecticut\, who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1975 with a BS in Business Administration. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1976 and retired as a Captain in 2006 after 30 years on active duty. He has commanded HSL-­51 in Atsugi Japan\, HSL-­41 in San Diego California\, Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility in San Diego and Naval Base Coronado\, which included NAS North Island\, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado\, NALF San Clemente Island\, the Silver Strand Training Complex\, La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Complex and OLF Imperial Beach. Since retiring from the Navy\, David has worked as the Chief Operating Officer and co-­owner of Priority Solutions\, a permanent placement- ­recruiting firm and as a Program Manager and leadership advisor for Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC). He assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Systems Technology Incorporated (STI) in 2011 and retired from STI in DEC 2017.

As someone who began her career in the pre-digital era\, she has an abiding interest in photo restoration\, digital archiving\, and historical preservation. In her free time\, you can usually find her browsing antique stores for old photographs\, hiking the beautiful Colorado trails\, reading\, or spending time with family. Marsha lives with her husband\, Ray Agostinelli\, a technology professional and creative writer\, in Boulder\, CO.
