DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t love a compelling biography? Many Coronadans have read Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego and now the legacy continues with a new book\, The Sugar King of California: The Life of Claus Spreckels penned by the same author\, Sandra Bonura.  \n \nThis is a rags-to-riches story of a colorful and controversial immigrant and his role in the development of America’s sugar industry. He became one of the richest Americans in history and triumphed in an era rife with cronyism and corruption which ultimately transformed California’s agriculture\, industry\, and transportation. He wielded a clenched fist over Hawai‘i’s economy for nearly two decades after occupying a position of unrivaled power and political influence with the Hawaiian monarchy\, while also advancing major technology developments on the islands. Harshly criticized by his enemies for ruthless business tactics but loved by his employees\, he was unapologetic in his quest for wealth\, asserting “Spreckels’s success is California’s success.”  \n \nBut there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. Spreckels’ biography is one of triumph and tragedy\, a portrait of a family torn apart by money\, jealousy\, and ego with lessons for us all. \n\nDr. Sandra Bonura\, who has been praised for her ability to breathe life into forgotten histories\, is a native San Diegan who spent her childhood in Coronado. SUMMARY:Naval History Symposium of the Western Naval History Association
DESCRIPTION:The Western Naval History Association will hold its 2025 naval history symposium on Saturday\, Feb. 1 and Sunday\, Feb. 2 onboard the USS Midway Museum on the waterfront in San Diego. The program runs from 8:45 am to 4:15 pm each day and includes presentations\, workshops and roundtable debates. \n \nThe symposium is open to the public\, and the fee to attend is $60\, which includes coffee service and lunch on both days (there’s no better deal than that). Attendance is included as a benefit of paid membership and the fee will include membership. \n \nPresenters include: Richard Frank\, Ed Offley\, David Winkler\, Parks Stephenson\, Leonard Heinz\, Carla Rahn Phillips\, Thomas Snyder\, Brian Walter\, Hal Friedman\, and Jon Parshall – all of them noted authors of books on naval history. \nTopics include: \n\nUSS Scorpion’s fate – structural failure\, ‘hot torpedo’ or Soviet submarine attack?\nDiving on warship wrecks\nThe Juan Carrillo Controversy and the Spanish Exploration of San Diego Bay\nRadar in World War II Pacific night battles\nVietnam War retrospective\nCollecting naval postal covers\n\nOther subjects include naval hospitals\, naval logistics in WWII\, the creation of historical documentation\, and more to be announced. Learn how to use AI tools for problem-solving\, decision-making\, and automation\, as well as strategies for leveraging AI ethically and effectively. \n \n\n\nMohammed Al Ani is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at San Diego City College\, specializing in business education\, data analytics\, and AI integration in the classroom. Holding an MBA in Data Analytics from San Diego State University and a Bachelor’s in Quantitative Economics from Tufts University\, he has taught a range of courses\, including Statistics for Business\, Business Communication\, and Small Business Management. With over five years as a Business Counselor/Advisor at the International Rescue Committee\, Al Ani has supported local entrepreneurs and now serves as full-time faculty\, designing innovative curricula like the AI in Small Business Bootcamp (2024). Actively engaged in AI’s impact on education\, he has completed multiple AI-focused professional development courses\, participated in the AAC&U Institute on AI\, Pedagogy\, and the Curriculum (2024-2025)\, and serves on San Diego City College’s Academic Senate AI workgroup. As a leader in business education\, Al Ani co-leads the Strong Workforce/Perkins project to expand entrepreneurship programs and previously contributed to UC Irvine’s Industry Advisory Board for curriculum development in Customer Experience.

SUMMARY:CHA Hosts Midway Docents for Wine & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association’s popular Wine & Lecture series continues Thursday\, February 20 at 5:30 pm with a special presentation from two USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum docents.  \nUS Navy veterans and long-time Midway docents Brian Butler and Steve Walker will present a dynamic visual journey titled The Midway Story. As the Midway comes off of its 20th-anniversary on the waterfront in 2024\, the presentation will highlight the Midway’s 47 years as an active duty US Navy ship\, as well as demonstrate how the museum earned the distinction of being one of San Diego’s pre-eminent tourist attractions. \nFirst opened in 2004\, the Midway has steadily grown its count of visitors as well as guest accolades. In 2024\, Midway welcomed its 20 millionth guest. With more than 26\,000 guest reviews\, Midway ranked #1 among 751 Things To Do in San Diego last year\, according to Trip Advisor\, a national travel assistance platform. The Museum was also ranked the fourth most popular museum of any type nationally in 2024.  \nAn even more primary reason for Midway’s acclaim is the patriotism\, skill\, and dedication of the more than 700 volunteers who donate more than 235\,000 hours annually. Within the volunteers\, the Docent team is considered the Midway’s “secret sauce” that makes the guest experience special. Many docents are US Navy veterans and their knowledge of how an aircraft carrier operates as well as their shared personal experiences are what guests say they remember and appreciate the most during their visit.  \n \nLate in 2024\, the Midway kicked off an ambitious new project – Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier. The 10-acre park will be located adjacent to the museum and is scheduled to open in 2028. Freedom Park will be the largest veteran-themed park on the West Coast. Butler and Walker’s presentation will also give an update on this project. \nThe Coronado Historical Association has a long history of collaborating with the USS Midway Museum. Most recently\, in 2023\, the Midway hosted a satellite installation as part of CHA’s Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Fifty Years of Freedom exhibit. CHA is excited to again partner with the Midway by hosting two of their best docents for this exciting lecture to be held in CHA’s lecture hall. DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA)\, San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, welcomes prospective CoSA students and families to CoSA Preview Night. The event takes place on Tuesday\, February 25 at 6 pm at the Coronado Performing Arts Center at 650 D Avenue. The preview night is open to all San Diego students who will be in grades 9 through 12 for the 2025-2026 school year. In addition\, students can begin the audition process by visiting CoSASanDiego.com. \nThis CoSA Preview Night features something new and exciting: current CoSA students will prepare performances and show off projects so the community gets a snapshot of the quality of  work created by CoSA students. It’s a great time to learn more about CoSA\, the six different conservatories\, as well as the audition and application process. \n“We’re excited to show prospective students what CoSA artists are up to\,” said Shane Schmeichel\, Director of Special Projects for CUSD. “Our CoSA Preview Night in December welcomed dozens of young artists and their families\, and we are expecting even more guests at our final preview event of the year on February 25th.” \nCoSA is home to more than 175 scholar artists in grades 9 through 12. CoSA provides an intensive\, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego\, who are admitted after an application and audition process. The purpose of the audition process is to build relationships with future teachers and to confirm that the student is passionate and dedicated to the art form so that the student is not overwhelmed once classes have started. The school is dedicated to nurturing students who are prepared to take on the challenge of becoming the next generation of young artists and critical thinkers. \nAll CoSA students attend Coronado High School\, most of whom spend the first three periods of block scheduling in academic courses\, then attend CoSA classes for two and a half hours for arts instruction. With a curriculum designed by professional artists and educators\, students are immersed in their chosen specialty in one of six conservatories: Classical and Contemporary Dance\, Digital Arts (Animation\, Filmmaking\, and Graphic Design)\, Instrumental Music\, Musical Theatre & Drama\, Theatre Production\, Design & Management and Visual Art. \n“Our students have the most amazing opportunities with this pre-professional program\,” said Linda Edison\, President of the CoSA Foundation. “It gives them creativity in doing something they love and fosters responsibility and leadership skills within a community of like-minded students. They have so many opportunities to shine!” \nAbout CoSA\nCoronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, home to 175 scholar artists grades 9 through 12\, who attend the nationally ranked Coronado High School.
