On October 17\, we will have Phil Dannels on the piano. \n \n\nPianist\, composer\, and tenor Dannels studied music at Point Loma Nazarene University. He has been heard in recital throughout the United States and has performed as a soloist at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego in masterclass with Lang Lang. Dannels has performed under the auspices of the San Diego Opera\, Bodhi Tree Concerts\, and Point Loma Opera Theatre. He spent several seasons as the assistant conductor for Point Loma Opera Theatre and directed their production of Donizetti’s Rita. In addition\, he has served as a répétiteur (tutor/coach) for various operas\, operettas\, and musicals throughout the San Diego area.

The discussion will cover the critical ethical and environmental issues tied to AI\, including bias and inequality\, social justice\, concerns about privacy and data use\, and touch on the environmental impact of AI technologies. \nThe session will also present a framework for how higher ed can incorporate these competencies into curricula\, showing how librarians and educators are well-equipped to guide these conversations. By linking AI literacy to established information literacy principles\, we help our campus communities navigate the intricate world of AI ethically\, responsibly\, and effectively. \nAbout the Speakers:  \nLucy Campbell (MLIS) is a Senior Assistant Librarian at SDSU\, serving as Electronic and Continuing Resources Librarian since 2023. With over 15 years experience as an academic librarian\, she has a broad research portfolio that includes work in UX\, discovery systems\, digital resource management\, and qualitative methods including metadata practices\, and student research engagement. \nKeven Jeffery (MLIS) is a Librarian at SDSU\, serving as Digital Technologies Librarian since 2007. Keven brings technical and infrastructure capability\, particularly in programming\, digital systems\, API integrations\, and technological innovation. Students explored how campfire stories can be brought to life through creativity and horror. \n“Students are excited to test their skills in a horror genre\,” said Anna Woerman\, CoSA DigArts Conservatory Director and Teacher. “They love horror and retelling the genre in their own way. Students get to be creative within the theme and they like to push the limits\, within a PG-13 appropriateness\,” added Woerman. \nHorror Nights\, now in its 16th year\, is a much-loved DigArts tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception & Lecture: Bitter Sweet with Kitty Morse
DESCRIPTION:CHA is proud to announce the opening of its newest WWII exhibit. In honor of this exhibit\, join us Thursday\, November 6\, for an exhibit opening reception and lecture featuring author Kitty Morse. Kitty will discuss her new book\, Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France. This book was written after she discovered her great-grandfather’s journal chronicling the advance of the Germans in Le Grand Est (Alsace-Lorraine) between April and December 1940\, and two notebooks filled with recipes written in her great-grandmother’s hand in a suitcase left to her by her mother. Bitter Sweet takes place in and around her mother’s birthplace\, Châlons-sur-Marne (now Châlons-en-Champagne). Blanche Lévy-Neymarck\, Morse’s maternal great-grandmother\, died at Auschwitz in 1944 along with one of her daughters and her son-in-law. Blanche’s husband Prosper\, an army surgeon in WWI\, was twice the recipient of the Légion d’Honneur. This book is not just the story of a family torn apart by war\, but it also features 70 unique recipes that show the rich history of a family. \nOn Thursday\, November 6\, a wine & cheese reception at 5:30 pm will be followed by the lecture from 6 to 7 pm. \nTickets are available now  \nMember ($15.00 each)\nNon-Member ($20.00 each) \nImportant Registration Information: Capacity is limited and reservations are required. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 17. While studying for her master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Kitty catered Moroccan diffas\, or banquets\, and went on to teach the intricacies of Moroccan cuisine in cooking schools and department stores nationwide. In June 2002\, she conducted a Culinary Concert on Moroccan culture and cuisine hosted by Julia Child\, as a benefit for the Harry Bell Foundation of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Kitty’s books have been translated into French\, German\, Polish\, and Czech. In 1984 (and for the next 25 years) she initiated annual gastronomic tours to Morocco that included culinary demonstrations in her family home\, a Moorish riad south of Casablanca. Her monthly e-newsletter\, The Kasbah Chronicles\, in French and in English\, is now in its 12th year of circulation.

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library and the San Diego Writers Festival will host a series of writing workshops this fall. Each focused on a different topic\, writers both new and experienced will find new strategies to hone their craft. Writers who attend a workshop will have the opportunity to have the entry fee waived if they choose to participate in Acorn Publishing Debut Author contest (details available here.) \n \nThis month\, attendees will learn tips to help get the word out on their work. From first to final draft\, a writer works with a very select few individuals. All that changes as you near publication\, and beyond. As a writer you now must market your work\, and yourself. That’s a tough job. It can be even tougher when you’re an introvert. In this workshop you’ll learn your introvert type\, and the natural abilities that come with that type. We’ll talk about how to use those hidden skills to grow your network and readership in a way that feels natural and comfortable. Extroverts welcome! \nThis event will take place via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:COSA Visual Arts. Courtesy CUSD\nCome experience “All at Once\,” an exhibition of original artworks\, live model figure drawings and a student designed fashion show. The opening reception for the exhibit is free and open to the public on Thursday\, Dec. 11 starting at 5:30 pm and closing at 7 pm in the Black Box Gallery on the Coronado High School campus\, 650 D Avenue. \nYou won’t want to miss the fashion show which hits the runway at 6 pm. \nAspiring fashion designer and visual art student\, Wendy Alcaraz collaborated with her fellow artists to design a clothing line based on artworks produced in the studio. The artworks will be projected as the artists themselves model the clothing inspired by their artworks. This year there will be digital illustrations on display. Junior Isabella Vilcans will display some prized hand-blown glass. Some of the most stunning figure drawings we have had in years will be featured in the show. The robot cannot go back until the question of “what do people need?” is answered. \nBut the answer to that question depends on who you ask\, and how. \nThey’re going to need to ask it a lot.

SUMMARY:Poetry for the People
DESCRIPTION:This year’s course will feature poems by state poets laureate. The responsibility of a State Poet Laureate is essentially the same as the U.S Poets Laureate\, “…to make public appearances at poetry readings or literary events and to promote awareness of poetry.” 46 states and the District of Columbia have a State Poet Laureate\, most appointed for a one or two-year term. \nThose participating in Poetry For The People XXlll will read selections from these State Poet Laureates and\, most importantly\, are encouraged to bring to the discussions their own insights\, observations and perceptions. Class members’ contributions are a vital part of the class experience. \n\nChuck Kamar received his bachelor’s from Boston State and his master’s from Boston University. He taught for 34 years in the Newton Public Schools\, the last 20 of which were at Newton North High School. In 1998 he won the Paul E. Elicker Award for Excellence in Teaching. \n\nRegister to receive reminder emails for this series. Registration is encouraged\, but not required.
