SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Every Living Thing" by Jason Roberts
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. \nFor our April meeting\, we will discuss the 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner Every Little Thing by Jason Roberts\, an epic and extraordinary account of scientific rivalry and obsession in the quest to survey all of life on Earth. \n \nAbout Every Little Thing \nIn the eighteenth century\, two men — exact contemporaries and polar opposites — dedicated their lives to the same daunting task: identifying and describing all life on Earth. Carl Linnaeus\, a pious Swedish doctor with a huckster’s flair\, believed that life belonged in tidy\, static categories. Georges-Louis de Buffon\, an aristocratic polymath and keeper of France’s royal garden\, viewed life as a dynamic swirl of complexities. Each began his task believing it to be difficult but not impossible: How could the planet possibly hold more than a few thousand species — or as many could fit on Noah’s Ark? \nBoth fell far short of their goal\, but in the process they articulated starkly divergent views on nature\, the future of the Earth\, and humanity itself. Linnaeus gave the world such concepts as mammal\, primate\, and Homo sapiens\, but he also denied that species change and he promulgated racist pseudoscience. Buffon formulated early prototypes of evolution and genetics\, warned of global climate change\, and argued passionately against prejudice. The clash of their conflicting worldviews continued well after their deaths\, as their successors contended for dominance in the emerging science that came to be called biology. \nIn Every Living Thing\, Jason Roberts weaves a sweeping\, unforgettable narrative spell\, exploring the intertwined lives and legacies of Linnaeus and Buffon — as well as the groundbreaking\, often fatal adventures of their acolytes — to trace an arc of insight and discovery that extends across three centuries into the present day.

We’re fortunate to have so many meaningful historic places\, and we’ll be highlighting them throughout the month. Our celebrations include a City Council Proclamation\, the presentation of plaques to recently designated historic homes\, and the beloved Historic Home Tour on Mother’s Day. \nThe celebrations will culminate in the annual Preservation Symposium on Thursday\, May 21\, at 5:30 pm. A wine and cheese reception will be followed by the the program at 6 pm. \nThis year’s program features a documentary screening and discussion with filmmaker Scott Goldstein. \nThe evening will address the unforgettable impact of loss in architectural history\, highlighted by the demolition of the iconic Maslon House in Rancho Mirage — designed by Richard Neutra in 1962. The razing of this modernist masterpiece in 2002 caused international outrage and directly inspired a new preservation movement in the region. \nFilmmaker Scott Goldstein will join us to present a portion of his documentary work and share his intensely personal connection to this landmark structure. Through interviews and archival footage\, the film brings the house back to life\, exploring the home\, the Maslon family\, and their incredible collection of modern art. \nGoldstein will recount his powerful story of returning to the desert only to find the magnificent home gone\, replaced by a structure that “just wasn’t the same.” Join us to hear this powerful\, firsthand account\, see related footage\, and discuss why architectural preservation matters and how the loss of history shapes the present.

SUMMARY:Coronado Island Film Festival presents Movie on the Beach: "Dirty Dancing"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival invites guests to step into the summer of 1963 on Friday\, June 26\, for its annual Movie on the Beach fundraiser — this year featuring the classic Dirty Dancing\, presented under the stars on the Coronado shoreline. \n \nWith the Hotel del Coronado as the backdrop\, the evening will transform the beach into a nostalgic coastal homage to Kellerman’s Mountain House in the Catskills. As the sun sets over the Pacific\, guests will be welcomed by glowing bonfires\, ocean breezes\, and the nostalgic soundtrack that will have you “Swayzing” as DJ Trisha Lynn and Marilyn Klisser of Club Coronado bring some heat to the sand. \nBeach chairs will be provided\, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets or jackets as the night may get chilly when the evening breeze rolls in. With a themed cocktail in hand and feet in the sand\, attendees can settle in for a unique cinematic experience. \nFor those seeking an elevated experience\, a limited number of exclusive fire pit lounges are available. Each includes a private fire pit\, seating for up to six guests\, a double-wide chaise lounge\, and a bespoke gift\, offering an intimate way to experience the evening. \nMovie on the Beach serves as a critical fundraiser supporting CIFF’s mission\, year-round outreach\, and cultural programming. \n“Year after year\, our movie on the beach — made possible by the Hotel del Coronado — grows into something more spectacular than the last\,” said Merridee Book\, CEO & Artistic Director\, Coronado Island Film Festival. “And yet the heart of this gathering has never been about the spectacle. It is about what happens when a community comes together around something it loves — and chooses to invest in it. The funds raised sustain our five-day festival and the free educational programming that reaches students\, emerging filmmakers\, and film lovers throughout the year. This is cinematic magic with real\, lasting impact.” \nTICKETS \nSponsorship opportunities are available for this event. Contact Jon Book at  sponsorship@coronadofilm.com.
