SUMMARY:2026 Preservation Symposium
DESCRIPTION:May is National Preservation Month\, and Coronado is joining communities nationwide in celebrating our unique heritage. We’re fortunate to have so many meaningful historic places\, and we’ll be highlighting them throughout the month. Our celebrations include a City Council Proclamation\, the presentation of plaques to recently designated historic homes\, and the beloved Historic Home Tour on Mother’s Day. \nThe celebrations will culminate in the annual Preservation Symposium on Thursday\, May 21\, at 5:30 pm. A wine and cheese reception will be followed by the the program at 6 pm. \nThis year’s program features a documentary screening and discussion with filmmaker Scott Goldstein. \nThe evening will address the unforgettable impact of loss in architectural history\, highlighted by the demolition of the iconic Maslon House in Rancho Mirage — designed by Richard Neutra in 1962. The razing of this modernist masterpiece in 2002 caused international outrage and directly inspired a new preservation movement in the region. \nFilmmaker Scott Goldstein will join us to present a portion of his documentary work and share his intensely personal connection to this landmark structure. Through interviews and archival footage\, the film brings the house back to life\, exploring the home\, the Maslon family\, and their incredible collection of modern art. \nGoldstein will recount his powerful story of returning to the desert only to find the magnificent home gone\, replaced by a structure that “just wasn’t the same.” Join us to hear this powerful\, firsthand account\, see related footage\, and discuss why architectural preservation matters and how the loss of history shapes the present.

SUMMARY:"Honoring America" with the Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra invites audiences to an inspiring evening of music and patriotism with its upcoming concert\, Honoring America\, on May 23 at 7 p.m. A pre-concert talk begins at 6:30 p.m.\, offering guests deeper insight into the program. The performance will take place at the Coronado Performing Arts Center\, located at 650 D Avenue in Coronado. \n \nUnder the direction of Maestro Osvaldo Mendoza\, the orchestra presents a thoughtfully curated program that celebrates the spirit and legacy of the United States in anticipation of the nation’s 250th anniversary. While often referred to informally as a sesquicentennial\, this milestone is more accurately a semiquincentennial — marking 250 years since the founding of the country. This concert serves as a musical tribute to that historic occasion\, blending beloved patriotic works with evocative American compositions. \n \nThe evening includes the iconic The Star-Spangled Banner\, immediately setting a tone of reverence and unity. From there\, audiences will be treated to the sweeping grandeur of a fanfare by John Williams\, whose music has come to define modern American cinematic sound. The program continues with The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa\, a rousing march that remains one of the most recognizable symbols of American musical pride. \nA highlight of the evening is Quiet City by Aaron Copland\, featuring guest soloist Ken Fitzgerald on trumpet. This introspective and haunting work captures the emotional landscape of urban life\, offering a contrast to the more celebratory pieces on the program. Fitzgerald’s performance is expected to bring both technical brilliance and expressive depth to the stage. \nThe concert also includes Trumpet Concerto by William Perry\, further showcasing Fitzgerald’s artistry and expanding the evening’s exploration of American musical voices. In addition\, audiences will experience Lincoln Portrait\, a powerful work that combines narration with orchestral music to honor President Abraham Lincoln and the enduring ideals he represents. \nRounding out the program is An American in Paris by George Gershwin\, a vibrant and jazzy depiction of an American traveler’s experiences abroad. Its lively rhythms and colorful orchestration provide an energetic and joyful conclusion to the evening. \nWith its blend of patriotic favorites and masterful compositions\, Honoring America promises to be both a celebration and a reflection — honoring the past while looking toward the future. SUMMARY:FOCUS event in support of homeless children and youth
DESCRIPTION:Across San Diego County\, compassionate organizations are changing lives every day by providing shelter\, counseling\, education\, job training\, mentoring\, and hope. These agencies are not only helping young people survive — they are helping them heal and build futures. \nTo learn more about the realities of youth homelessness and meet organizations successfully addressing this crisis\, the public is invited to attend a special community evening on May 27 from 5:45 to 7:30 pm in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library. \nHosted by FOCUS\, the event will feature several nonprofit partners working directly with children and youth experiencing homelessness\, including Urban Street Angels\, Youth Assistance Coalition\, Storefront\, and Solutions for Change. \nGuests will have the opportunity to hear brief presentations\, ask questions\, connect directly with agency representatives\, and learn how our community can be part of meaningful solutions. \nBehind every statistic is a child longing not just for shelter\, but for safety\, dignity\, and hope. This evening is an opportunity to listen\, to learn\, and perhaps most importantly\, to discover how together we can create solutions where compassion becomes action.

SUMMARY:Hospital Auxiliary's Summer Fair fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its Summer Fair on Friday\, June 5 from 9 am to 2 pm at the hospital’s Sandermann Auditorium at 265 Soledad Place. \nAt last fall’s Holiday Fair\, Auxiliary volunteer Mari Gilbert introduced her fun vintage items of family heirlooms and collectibles for sale. Gilbert assured the fundraising planners\, “If it’s old\, somebody wants it!” \nSharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary invites the public to a summer gift fair on June 5 from 9am -2pm on Soledad Place (behind the hospital)\, raising funds for the hospital’s projects. Mari Gilbert\, pictured\, will be selling her vintage treasures. Residents are encouraged to donate their no longer needed collectibles to raise additional monies. Proceeds benefit Sharp Coronado Hospital’s Primary Stroke Center and the Katy Green & Cathy McJannet Nursing Scholarship Program. Come shop\, stay for lunch\, and support a great local cause.\nPurchasing “vintage” is a current trend to recycle items instead of discarding them to landfills — and to relive a time past. Clothing\, handbags\, china\, toys and games\, all play a part. At Gilbert’s booth\, look for fashion from the ’80s to today\, including denim\, leather jackets\, designer items\, rock and roll t-shirts\, and jewelry for both men and women. If you are looking for a Father’s Day gift\, consider a military or nautical collectible\, print\, or antique. What are some of the more unusual things that will be available? Check out Hotel del Coronado memorabilia from the 1930s when Gilbert’s grandmother actually lived there. \nAdditional artists and vendors will be selling their wares\, including many unique handmade items. A portion of their sales will be donated to the Auxiliary\, the nonprofit organization that supports the hospital’s programs and projects. \nHome decor\, handmade newborn outfits\, charcuterie boards\, bottle carriers\, housewares\, cloth carry bags\, hand-crafted greeting cards\, jewelry\, homemade jams\, and hostess gifts will be for sale. \nSpecialty Accessories\, a favorite vendor\, will have a large selection of clothing for sale. Pouch Leather Bags is returning with many sizes and colors. Once again\, Pampered Chef will be displaying their wide range of cooking tools. \nThe Auxiliary’s Quilt and Afghan Committee will be selling lap quilts and other handmade textile creations. Approximately 80 items are made each year and then donated to clients at the Villa or in hospice care. The Holiday and Summer Fairs are the only time they are available for sale. 100% of their sale price is donated to the Auxiliary. \nAfter you shop\, enjoy food from the Nono Jose Argentinas food truck vendor; word is that the empanadas are wonderful! \nMost of the funds raised at this event will be directed to the Auxiliary’s pledge in support of the Primary Stroke Center\, offering expert stroke care to our community.  Additionally\, the Auxiliary has begun supporting the Katy Green and Cathy McJannet Nursing Scholarship program. Through this program\, current Sharp Coronado Hospital employees can apply for funding to advance their nursing careers.

SUMMARY:Coronado Island Film Festival presents Movie on the Beach: "Dirty Dancing"
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival invites guests to step into the summer of 1963 on Friday\, June 26\, for its annual Movie on the Beach fundraiser — this year featuring the classic Dirty Dancing\, presented under the stars on the Coronado shoreline. \n \nWith the Hotel del Coronado as the backdrop\, the evening will transform the beach into a nostalgic coastal homage to Kellerman’s Mountain House in the Catskills. As the sun sets over the Pacific\, guests will be welcomed by glowing bonfires\, ocean breezes\, and the nostalgic soundtrack that will have you “Swayzing” as DJ Trisha Lynn and Marilyn Klisser of Club Coronado bring some heat to the sand. \nBeach chairs will be provided\, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets or jackets as the night may get chilly when the evening breeze rolls in. With a themed cocktail in hand and feet in the sand\, attendees can settle in for a unique cinematic experience. \nFor those seeking an elevated experience\, a limited number of exclusive fire pit lounges are available. Each includes a private fire pit\, seating for up to six guests\, a double-wide chaise lounge\, and a bespoke gift\, offering an intimate way to experience the evening. \nMovie on the Beach serves as a critical fundraiser supporting CIFF’s mission\, year-round outreach\, and cultural programming. \n“Year after year\, our movie on the beach — made possible by the Hotel del Coronado — grows into something more spectacular than the last\,” said Merridee Book\, CEO & Artistic Director\, Coronado Island Film Festival. “And yet the heart of this gathering has never been about the spectacle. It is about what happens when a community comes together around something it loves — and chooses to invest in it. The funds raised sustain our five-day festival and the free educational programming that reaches students\, emerging filmmakers\, and film lovers throughout the year. This is cinematic magic with real\, lasting impact.” \nTICKETS \nSponsorship opportunities are available for this event. Contact Jon Book at  sponsorship@coronadofilm.com.
