SUMMARY:Delta Beach cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Delta Beach before the 2022 cleanup.\nEmerald Keepers will be helping to clean the northern end of Delta Beach in support of Naval Base Coronado’s Environmental Team. \nDelta Beach\, on the bay side of Silver Strand\, just south of the Naval Amphibious Base is on Navy land. This stretch of coastline has been designated as a critical habitat for the western snowy plover and the California least tern. The western snowy plover is listed as threatened and the California least tern is listed as endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act. \nThis cleanup has been scheduled after least tern nesting season\, which runs April through September. This is an opportunity to see a beach normally closed to human activity\, while cleaning up a habitat for vulnerable species and keeping trash out of the San Diego Bay to protect marine animals. \nDirections: From Coronado\, head south on state Route 75 for 2.4 miles. Make a U-turn at the Fiddlers Cove Marina and RV park (Note: There is no sign or traffic light\, but it’s the first left turn lane south of the Naval Amphibious Base). Head back north for about 1 mile and look for the Emerald Keepers flag by the north gate for Delta Beach. Drive carefully across the bike path and park on the sand inside the fence line. \nBring buckets\, gloves\, and pickers if you have them. Questions? Contact info@emeraldkeepers.org

SUMMARY:“A Very Special Christmas Tree” Performance
DESCRIPTION:  \nTwo performances of “A Very Special Christmas Tree” will take place on Nov. 5 — a 12:30  pm show for elementary students and a 7 pm show for the community. The narrator is Coronado High School Principal Karin Mellina. \nThis show is written expressly for children and is 45-50 minutes in length. Performers are students in a dance class through the CHS physical education department\, and most have not danced prior to this class; what progress they’ve made in their dancing and commitment to provide a community service and mentorship for younger students. \nBecause of some wonderful donors\, this performance is FREE and is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. \nA Very Special Christmas Tree\nDeep in the forest where the fairies dwell\, a little pine tree grows among her lush and lofty neighbors. Her branches droop\, her needles are sparse\, and every other tree towers above her. Her greatest wish is to grow taller and stronger\, so she will be chosen to stand in a special place for the Christmas season.\nAfter every other tree finds a glorious home for the holiday\, the little tree is disappointed to find where she has been taken.\nBut with the help of a kind man and a wise angel\, the little tree discovers the true spirit of Christmas and that her greatest wish has come true.\n

SUMMARY:Everyone A Reader volunteer training
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Unified School District is excited to bring back the Everyone A Reader (EAR) program\, a countywide initiative that began in 1995. EAR volunteers are specially trained to provide one-to-one reading support to students in grades 1-3 who need extra reading support. \nBoth Village and Silver Strand Elementary Schools have had EAR programs in the past\, but the program has been paused since the pandemic. \n“We are excited to bring this program back to our schools\,” said Senior Director of Learning Dr. Megan Battle. “It’s a proven and effective way to help students build reading skills and confidence\, and it also supports teachers by giving students the extra attention they need.” \nThe benefits of EAR reach both students and volunteers. Students gain valuable skills and build confidence\, which can lead to success in later grades. For volunteers\, it’s a meaningful opportunity to make a tangible difference in a child’s life while also building connections in the community. \nTo participate\, volunteers must complete a training session before working with students. CUSD is hosting a one hour workshop on Monday\, Nov. 17\, 9-10 am in the District Office\, 201 Sixth Street. Volunteers must also have a CUSD volunteer clearance including Livescan Fingerprint. The district will reimburse up to $50 for the cost of fingerprinting\, which can be used for all volunteering in the district for a lifetime. \n“We welcome all community members\, even without students in school\, to participate in this rewarding program. Some of our best volunteers are grandparents!” said Dr. Battle. \nVolunteers will coordinate directly with teachers to set schedules that work best for them. \nIf you are passionate about reading and want to make a positive impact\, this is a wonderful way to get involved. \n

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "There\, There" by Tommy Orange
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. \nFor our October meeting\, we will discuss the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award winner There\, There by Tommy Orange\, a wondrous and shattering novel that follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow\, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize. \nPlace this title on hold via our online catalog\, or check out the e-book through the CloudLibrary app. \nAbout There\, There \nAmong them is Jacquie Red Feather\, newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene\, pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and working at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil\, coming to perform traditional dance for the very first time. They converge and collide on one fateful day at the Big Oakland Powwow and together this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American — grappling with a complex and painful history\, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality\, with communion and sacrifice and heroism \nA book with “so much jangling energy and brings so much news from a distinct corner of American life that it’s a revelation” (The New York Times). It is fierce\, funny\, suspenseful\, and impossible to put down — full of poetry and rage\, exploding onto the page with urgency and force. There There is at once poignant and unflinching\, utterly contemporary and truly unforgettable.
