SUMMARY:Delta Beach Clean Up With Emerald Keepers
DESCRIPTION:Join Emerald Keepers on Saturday\, February 8 from 10 am to 12 noon to support the Navy’s cleanup of Delta Beach. \nDelta Beach\, on the bay side of Coronado’s Naval Amphibious Base\, is located 2.7 miles south of the Hotel Del. Look for the large Emerald Keepers sign by a gate in the fence. Volunteers can park at the Fiddler’s Cove parking lot at the south end of Delta Beach\, or parking will also be available on the sand inside the gated entrance to Delta Beach. \nRecruit your friends and neighbors as there is a large beach area to clean up. Registration is not required. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and\, a picker and bucket if you have them. Emerald Keepers will have some gloves\, buckets\, and pickers available for volunteers. \nOn the bay side of Coronado’s Naval Amphibious Base\, Delta Beach is not usually open to the public or Navy activity as it is was recently designated a critical habitat for the Least Tern and Snowy Plover birds. As a result\, the large amount of trash that washes ashore is not accessible for most beach cleanups and accumulates throughout the year.

SUMMARY:CHA Hosts Midway Docents for Wine & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association’s popular Wine & Lecture series continues Thursday\, February 20 at 5:30 pm with a special presentation from two USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum docents.  \nUS Navy veterans and long-time Midway docents Brian Butler and Steve Walker will present a dynamic visual journey titled The Midway Story. As the Midway comes off of its 20th-anniversary on the waterfront in 2024\, the presentation will highlight the Midway’s 47 years as an active duty US Navy ship\, as well as demonstrate how the museum earned the distinction of being one of San Diego’s pre-eminent tourist attractions. \nFirst opened in 2004\, the Midway has steadily grown its count of visitors as well as guest accolades. In 2024\, Midway welcomed its 20 millionth guest. With more than 26\,000 guest reviews\, Midway ranked #1 among 751 Things To Do in San Diego last year\, according to Trip Advisor\, a national travel assistance platform. The Museum was also ranked the fourth most popular museum of any type nationally in 2024.  \nAn even more primary reason for Midway’s acclaim is the patriotism\, skill\, and dedication of the more than 700 volunteers who donate more than 235\,000 hours annually. Within the volunteers\, the Docent team is considered the Midway’s “secret sauce” that makes the guest experience special. Many docents are US Navy veterans and their knowledge of how an aircraft carrier operates as well as their shared personal experiences are what guests say they remember and appreciate the most during their visit.  \n \nLate in 2024\, the Midway kicked off an ambitious new project – Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier. The 10-acre park will be located adjacent to the museum and is scheduled to open in 2028. Freedom Park will be the largest veteran-themed park on the West Coast. Butler and Walker’s presentation will also give an update on this project. \nThe Coronado Historical Association has a long history of collaborating with the USS Midway Museum. Most recently\, in 2023\, the Midway hosted a satellite installation as part of CHA’s Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Fifty Years of Freedom exhibit. CHA is excited to again partner with the Midway by hosting two of their best docents for this exciting lecture to be held in CHA’s lecture hall. SUMMARY:Best of the Best: "Brown Girl Dreaming" by Jacqueline Woodson
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering below. Registration is not required. \n\nFor our February meeting\, we will discuss the 2014 Newberry Honor winner Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson\, a powerful memoir that tells the moving story of her childhood in mesmerizing verse. \nPlace this title on hold via our online catalog\, or check out the e-book through the CloudLibrary app. \n \nAbout Brown Girl Dreaming \nRaised in South Carolina and New York\, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems\, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s\, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful\, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged\, each line a glimpse into a child’s soul as she searches for her place in the world. Woodson’s eloquent poetry also reflects the joy of finding her voice through writing stories\, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child. Her love of stories inspired her and stayed with her\, creating the first sparks of the gifted writer she was to become.

SUMMARY:"Let’s Call Her Barbie" - A Book and Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Did you know March 9 is Barbie’s birthday? Come celebrate the iconic doll’s 66th birthday with author Renee Rosen. Rosen’s latest novel “Let’s Call Her Barbie“ is a fresh and fun story about the invention of the doll we all know. She will talk about her inspiration for the book and more. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Limited preferred seating is available with purchase of Let’s Call Her Barbie” through Adventures by the Book. Please visit https://adventuresbythebook.com/calendar-event/renee-rosen-3-4-25/ for more information. \nAbout Let’s Call Her Barbie  \nWhen Ruth Handler walks into the boardroom of the toy company she co-founded and pitches her idea for a doll unlike any other\, she knows what she’s setting in motion. It might just take the world a moment to catch up. \nIn 1956\, the only dolls on the market for little girls let them pretend to be mothers. Ruth’s vision for a doll shaped like a grown woman and outfitted in an enviable wardrobe will let them dream they can be anything. As Ruth assembles her team of creative rebels—head engineer Jack Ryan who hides his deepest secrets behind his genius and designers Charlotte Johnson and Stevie Klein\, whose hopes and dreams rest on the success of Barbie’s fashion—she knows they’re working against a ticking clock to get this wild idea off the ground. \nIn the decades to come—through soaring heights and devastating personal lows\, public scandals and private tensions— each of them will have to decide how tightly to hold on to their creation. Because Barbie has never been just a doll—she’s a legacy. \nAbout Renée Rosen  \nRenée Rosen is the USA Today bestselling author of “Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl\,” “The Social Graces\,” “Park Avenue Summer\,” “Windy City Blues\,” “White Collar Girl\,” “What the Lady Wants\,” and “Dollface.” Renée lives in Chicago.
