SUMMARY:CoSA Visual Arts Showcases "Centered" - A Special Exhibit at C3 Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Visual Arts conservatory is set to enchant guests with the exhibit “Centered” at C3 Gallery at 1845 Strand Way on Tuesday\, April 29 from 5:30 to 7pm. More than 125 pieces from all students will be on display\, including 3D art. The exhibit also features a 2025 Senior Showcase called “Flashback.” \n“The seniors like the ‘Flashback’ theme because they can look through the work they have produced over the last four years and choose works they prefer\,” said Karrie Jackson\, Visual Arts Conservatory Chair. “Their work has really evolved to showcase more advanced technical skill and portraits.” \nThe opening reception will be held in the Nautilus Room\, and the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. \nFor graduating seniors like Ben Byars\, the exhibit is a chance to showcase art that has grown and developed over the years. \n“Of all the subjects I’ve painted and drawn\, portraits have been my favorite\,” said Byars. “This year has led to some of my favorite stylistic and compositional experimentation with portraiture\, and I hope to continue with it going forward.” \nAs conservatory chair\, Jackson is excited that CoSA Visual Arts has expanded this year to accommodate growing interest after running a waitlist for more than ten years. \n“I’m so grateful we can make room for more enthusiastic and skilled student artists\,” said Jackson. “I personally believe creativity should be cultivated and not competitive\, so I am happy more students have the space and the community to cultivate their interest.”

SUMMARY:An Evening with Brad Taylor: NYT Bestselling Author and Former Special Forces Officer Explores 'Into the Gray Zone'
DESCRIPTION:New York Times bestselling author Brad Taylor will be at the Coronado Library discussing his new book\, Into the Gray Zone\, with Matt Coyle. A book-signing will follow. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Limited preferred seating is available with purchase of Into the Gray Zone through Warwick’s bookstore. Please visit https://www.warwicks.com/taylor-2025-reserved-seat or call the store at 858-454-0347 for more information. \n\nBrad Taylor\, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.)\, is a twenty-one-year veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry and Special Forces\, including eight years with Delta Force. Taylor retired in 2010 after serving more than two decades and participating in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has written eighteen New York Times bestsellers and is a security consultant on asymmetric threats for various agencies. He lives in Charleston\, South Carolina\, with his wife and two daughters. \nAbout Into the Gray Zone \nPike Logan uncovers a geopolitical scheme that has spiraled out of control in India in this latest pulse-pounding thriller from New York Times bestselling author and former special forces officer Brad Taylor. \nWhile on a routine security assessment in India\, Taskforce operator Pike Logan foils an attempted attack on a meeting between the CIA and India’s intelligence service. Both government agencies believe it’s nothing more than a minor terrorist attack\, but Pike suspects that something much more sinister is at play. After another terrorist operation at the Taj Mahal\, he begins to believe that outside powers are attacking India in the gray zone between peace and war\, leveraging terrorist groups for nothing more than economic gain. But the separatists conducting the operations have their own agenda. \nAfter a massive slaughter and kidnapping of hostages during an elaborate Indian pre-wedding party\, two global powers are destabilized\, and only Pike Logan and his team can de-escalate the tension by rescuing the captives. What follows is a race against the clock that winds through the bustling markets of Old Delhi\, the luxurious resorts of Goa\, and the epic halls of the Taj Mahal. It will take everything that Logan and the taskforce have to foil an intricate plot that leaves countless lives in the balance. \nMatt Coyle is the author of the bestselling Rick Cahill crime series. His books have won the Anthony\, Shamus\, Lefty\, Authors on the Air Book of the Year\, and the San Diego Book Awards\, among others. He was the 2021 San Diego Writers Festival’s Mystery Writer of the Year. Odyssey’s End was a Lefty Award Finalist. Matt was recently named a 2024 Odin Award-winner from the San Diego Writers and Editors Guild. He lives in San Diego and is working on something brand new.

SUMMARY:CIFF Classic Film Screening "American Graffiti" (1973)
DESCRIPTION:CIFF presents beloved 1973 treasure “American Graffiti” on April 30. See it on the big screen! \nOne of everybody’s all-time favorite movies\, “American Graffiti” is coming to Coronado’s Village Theatre on Wednesday\, April 30. Tickets are $15 and are available now at coronadofilmfest.com. Doors open at 5 pm for a complimentary Meet and Greet glass of wine\, followed at 5:30 by the film intro by CIFF organizers Merridee Book and Doug St. Denis\, a vintage cartoon\, and the feature presentation. \nThe story is based on George Lucas’s own memories\, which very likely are a lot like yours. No matter what age you are today\, this movie will take you back to those heady\, scary\, exciting\, coming-of-age days – that summer vacation after high school graduation\, being with your friends one last night before you scatter to parts unknown into the mystery of the adulthood that awaits. \nThe film was a low-budget long-shot by Universal Studios\, who were so unsure of it that it sat on the shelf for six months before they decided to release it. They had no clue how to market it because it had no known “stars.” Nobody had ever heard of writer/director George Lucas\, and the actors were all pretty much unknown\, including Richard Dreyfuss\, Ron Howard\, Mackenzie Phillips\, Candy Clark\, Paul Le Mat\, Charles Martin Smith\, Cindy Williams\, and Suzanne Sommers as “the blonde in the T- Bird.” \nIt was not until Francis Ford Coppola decided to come on as producer that Universal agreed to finance the film. It was made for a lean $775\,000\, with an eventual box office gross of over $115\,000\,000\, making it one of the most profitable movies ever made. Of course\, this was before Lucas’s “Star Wars” series and Harrison Ford’s “Indiana Jones” became household names in the years to follow; and it was Richard Dreyfuss’s breakout film\, to be followed by starring roles in major successes such as “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” \nTo the studio’s surprise\, the film was an immediate success and went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, Best Director\, Best Supporting Actress\, Best Original Screenplay\, and Best Editing. \nCIFF is pleased to bring a classic film to the big screen in your neighborhood theatre every month\, always on the last Wednesday. Mark your calendars now for May 28 and the sensational 1972 classic\, “The Godfather.” Tickets for the entire lineup are available in advance on our website at coronadofilmfest.com.

SUMMARY:Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will gather at the post office parking lot on Saturday\, May 10 to sort\, box and distribute food collected by letter carriers during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The Coronado-based public charity\, the Rick and Katie Moore Foundation\, needs volunteers to help with this process on Saturday afternoon. Each year\, about 5000-10000 pounds of food is distributed. Since launching in 1993\, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive\, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States. \nYou can help by joining letter carriers and partner organizations in the fight to end hunger by participating. Simply leave your donation of non-perishable food in a bag near your mailbox on May 10. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAll photos courtesy of The Rick & Katie Moore Foundation.\n  \nRELATED 2018: \nStep Up to Stamp Out Hunger on May 12th
