Her career began in Coronado\, but her name became internationally known\, linked with the landscape beauty of Southern California\, with Arts & Crafts landscape design\, and with Balboa Park\, which she helped to develop and preserve. Sessions passionately promoted horticulture as an instrument of individual and community betterment. She published hundreds of articles on plants and gardening\, encouraging the use of native plants and those appropriate to the Southern California climate. She holds M.S.\, M.L.S.\, and J.D. degrees and is retired from the University of San Diego School of Law. She is the Associate Editor of California Garden magazine and serves on the boards of California Garden & Landscape History Society and the San Diego Floral Association. Carter is a member of Forever Balboa Park’s Horticulture Committee and Park Improvement Committee.

SUMMARY:34th Annual Operation Clean Sweep
DESCRIPTION:The Port of San Diego and San Diego Working Waterfront invite the public to participate in the 34th annual Operation Clean Sweep on Saturday\, August 24\, 2024\, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at various locations around San Diego Bay. Following the event\, an after party will be held for all volunteers on Shelter Island in Point Loma adjacent to the Bali Hai Restaurant until noon. \nOperation Clean Sweep seeks to remove trash and debris from San Diego Bay and the waterways that enter the bay. In 2023\, nearly 1\,000 volunteers removed 10.5 tons of trash and debris from San Diego Bay and the surrounding waterfront\, including shopping carts\, discarded bicycles\, mattresses\, household appliances\, tires and other items\, many of which were recovered underwater by volunteer civilian\, military\, and Port of San Diego Harbor Police divers. \nhttps://sdworkingwaterfront.com/events/operation-clean-sweep\n“This is the most community-oriented event that our association organizes\,” said Sharon Cloward\, president of the San Diego Working Waterfront\, which represents 800 businesses around San Diego Bay. “We all want clean water and clean neighborhoods\, so we have to pitch in and pick up the trash that comes out of storm drains\, or down creeks or from flood channels\, mucking up the shoreline or settling onto the bottom of the bay. Our waterfront workers are dedicated to doing their part in keeping the bay clean.” \nVolunteers are needed to assist with this year’s event and are encouraged to sign up and participate by choosing a location along the bay or within their own community. \n“As environmental champions\, the Port of San Diego is dedicated to protecting the health of San Diego Bay so that all residents and visitors can enjoy it. This is what we promised our surrounding communities and all the people of California\,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun\, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “We are proud to support Operation Clean Sweep\, one of the most impactful environmental cleanups\, not just for San Diego Bay and its shorelines\, but the entire region. Please join us\, our partners at the San Diego Working Waterfront\, all our Port tenants and take part in this important event.” \nOperation Clean Sweep is expecting upwards of 1\,100 volunteers. Each volunteer receives a free t-shirt\, and the San Diego Working Waterfront is providing a volunteer after party on Shelter Island at Shelter Island Shoreline Park\, 2232 Shelter Island Drive. The t-shirt doubles as a ticket for a free meal from Leilani’s food truck. Festivities also include kids’ soccer activities with San Diego FC\, entertainment by DJ Justin Kanoya\, raffles\, a Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department command van display\, booths\, prizes for the most unusual trash found\, and more. \nAnyone interested in volunteering can learn more and register at sdworkingwaterfront.com/events/operation-clean-sweep. A “compelling blend of victims’ narratives and rigorous historical and legal analysis\, making a significant contribution to our understanding of corporate accountability and transitional justice\,” according to Leigh Payne of the University of Oxford\, this book shares the story of how the French National Railways were complicit in the Holocaust. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAbout the Book \nIn the immediate decades after World War II\, the French National Railways (SNCF) was celebrated for its acts of wartime heroism. However\, recent debates and litigation have revealed the ways the SNCF worked as an accomplice to the Third Reich and was actively complicit in the deportation of 76\,000 Jews and other civilians to death camps. Sarah Federman delves into the interconnected roles—perpetrator\, victim\, and hero—the company took on during the harrowing years of the Holocaust. Grounded in history and case law\, Last Train to Auschwitz traces the SNCF’s journey toward accountability in France and the United States\, culminating in a multimillion-dollar settlement paid by the French government on behalf of the railways. The poignant and informative testimonies of survivors illuminate the long-term effects of the railroad’s impact on individuals\, leading the company to make overdue amends. In a time when corporations are increasingly granted the same rights as people\, Federman’s detailed account demonstrates the obligations businesses have to atone for aiding and abetting governments in committing atrocities. This volume highlights the necessity of corporate integrity and will be essential reading for those called to engage in the difficult work of responding to past harms. \nAbout the Author \nSarah Federman is an author\, educator\, and conflict resolution practitioner. Prior to this work\, she spent a decade as an international executive working with clients such as Google and the NFL. A job transfer from Manhattan to Paris led her to an encounter with her own name on a Holocaust memorial wall. This moment prompted her to turn her attention to helping people avoid mass violence\, focusing specifically on corporate complicity. She is now an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the Joan B Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego.

On September 13 we welcome Naomi Hobbs on piano for an “American Music” themed performance that includes pieces by Scott Joplin\, Frederick Loewe\, Leonardo Bernstein\, and more. \n\nNaomi Hobbs was born and raised in Tokyo\, Japan. She earned her Music Degree at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo\, where she taught for ten years. In 1998\, one year before she moved to San Diego\, she performed Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. She was the instructor of Music and Piano class at San Diego Community College for Ten years. She has been composing and arranging besides performing at concerts. She was the first prize winner of the 7th International Piano Competition in Mexico in 2012 and the gold medalist of 6th Seattle International Piano Competition in 2015.
