SUMMARY:SDSU Professor Dr. Brian Adams to speak on local elections at Coronado Democratic Club meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Democratic Club will host Dr. Brian Adams\, Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University\, as its featured speaker on Saturday\, April 11\, at the Coronado Public Library’s Winn Room. \nDr. Adams specializes in the study of local politics\, with research examining voter behavior\, campaign finance\, and electoral dynamics in city council and school board elections. His work explores how candidates communicate with voters\, the role of ballot cues\, and the factors that influence decision-making in local contests. \nHis presentation will focus on how local campaigns take shape\, including the importance of early engagement\, fundraising\, and voter outreach. As communities begin looking ahead to the upcoming midterm cycle\, the discussion will provide perspective on how local races develop and why early activity can play a decisive role. \nLocal elections\, while often less visible than state or national contests\, have a direct impact on schools\, governance\, and community priorities. Dr. Adams’ talk will offer insight into how these elections function and what influences outcomes at the local level. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session following the presentation. \nTiming: \n\n10:30 AM – Social\n11:00 AM – Program Begins\n12:30 PM – Program Concludes\n\nFor additional information\, please contact the Coronado Democratic Club.

SUMMARY:An evening with international soccer star Landon Donovan
DESCRIPTION:As excitement builds around the World Cup — played in part on U.S. soil this year — join the Coronado Public Library for a special evening with Landon Donovan\, widely regarded as one of the greatest American soccer players of all time. Donovan will share reflections from Landon: A Memoir\, offering an inside look at his life on and off the field\, from defining career moments to the challenges that shaped his journey beyond the game. \nA six-time MLS Cup champion and four-time U.S. Soccer Player of the Year\, Donovan remains the all-time assists leader for the U.S. Men’s National Team and is tied for the most international goals scored by an American man. His five World Cup goals make him the highest-scoring American male player in tournament history\, and Major League Soccer honored his legacy by naming its MVP award after him. Yet Donovan’s memoir goes far beyond trophies and highlight reels\, it’s a story of resilience\, vulnerability\, and self-discovery. \nThe event serves as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Coronado Public Library’s work with the Exceptional Families Program and requires a paid ticket for entry. The Friends of the Coronado Public Library are dedicated supporters who offer financial assistance for a variety of the Coronado Public Library’s programs that serve readers and learners of all ages. The Exceptional Families Program is a partnership with the Coronado Community Foundation and Camp Able which offers monthly programs that provide enrichment\, respite\, and community connection for families with special needs members\, particularly those who have aged out of school-based services or are transitioning beyond the classroom. \nTicket options include:  \n\n$10 entry only \n\n\n$29.95 for admission for one person and one copy of Landon: A Memoir\n\nTickets can be purchased at cplevents.org or adventuresbythebook.com/calendar-event/landon-donovan-4-11-26/. This event will take place at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in partnership with Adventures by the Book. All seating is first-come\, first-served.

Now in its third year\, the fair continues to expand to address need on the island. \nThe fair is open to job seekers of all ages and experience levels. Retired residents and seniors are encouraged to participate as a way to apply their decades of professional experience\, stay engaged in the community\, make new friends\, and earn supplemental income. \nThe Coronado Job Fair comes at a time when numerous residents are looking for work following government downsizing and amid rising costs for housing\, food\, utilities and healthcare. The event will take place in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library and is meant to connect Coronadans with jobs close to home. Four of Coronado’s resorts and about a dozen Coronado businesses will have hiring representatives available to discuss current openings and collect resumes. \nEvent hours have been adjusted this year (noon-4 pm) to fully accommodate students from Coronado High School\, allowing them to explore summer employment opportunities with local employers. \n“We want this event to open doors for residents at every stage of life\,” said Claudia Ludlow\, Interim Chair of Discover Coronado. “Whether someone is looking for their very first job\, returning to the workforce\, or looking to stay active in retirement\, the Coronado Job Fair connects our community with real opportunities right here at home.” \nThe April 22 Coronado Job Fair is open to the public and attendees are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resumes. SUMMARY:2026 Preservation Symposium
DESCRIPTION:May is National Preservation Month\, and Coronado is joining communities nationwide in celebrating our unique heritage. We’re fortunate to have so many meaningful historic places\, and we’ll be highlighting them throughout the month. Our celebrations include a City Council Proclamation\, the presentation of plaques to recently designated historic homes\, and the beloved Historic Home Tour on Mother’s Day. \nThe celebrations will culminate in the annual Preservation Symposium on Thursday\, May 21\, at 5:30 pm. A wine and cheese reception will be followed by the the program at 6 pm. \nThis year’s program features a documentary screening and discussion with filmmaker Scott Goldstein. \nThe evening will address the unforgettable impact of loss in architectural history\, highlighted by the demolition of the iconic Maslon House in Rancho Mirage — designed by Richard Neutra in 1962. The razing of this modernist masterpiece in 2002 caused international outrage and directly inspired a new preservation movement in the region. \nFilmmaker Scott Goldstein will join us to present a portion of his documentary work and share his intensely personal connection to this landmark structure. Through interviews and archival footage\, the film brings the house back to life\, exploring the home\, the Maslon family\, and their incredible collection of modern art. \nGoldstein will recount his powerful story of returning to the desert only to find the magnificent home gone\, replaced by a structure that “just wasn’t the same.” Join us to hear this powerful\, firsthand account\, see related footage\, and discuss why architectural preservation matters and how the loss of history shapes the present.
