SUMMARY:Learning to relax through mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This winter series taught by UCSD’s Jamie Pineda will provide insights into relaxation and how to experience the mind freer from emotional reactivity. It will offer information on what mindfulness is and how to develop it to live a stress free\, happier\, and healthier life. \nPerfect for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Sessions begin weekly on Sundays starting Jan. 4. Attend one class or all four. \n\nClass 1: Learning to Relax \nWe will explore what creates an unbalanced mind and why learning to relax is important. Most of us believe that getting rid of thoughts is the way to a calm and peaceful mind. The key is in how to do it. By allowing the mind to rest as it is\, we can turn down the volume of thinking so it no longer bothers us. We call this way of attending “mindfulness.” \n\nJaime Pineda is professor of neuroscience\, cognitive science\, and psychiatry at the University of California\, San Diego. He is the author of several books\, the latest being Controlling Mental Chaos: Harnessing the Power of the Creative Mind (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2023). He is a long-time contemplative practitioner and a certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher (MMTCP\, 2025). He now dedicates his time sharing the insights he’s learned as a neuroscientist and mindfulness student.

SUMMARY:Soroptimist Live Your Dream scholarship award ceremony
DESCRIPTION:2024/2025 Live Your Dream scholarship award recipients. Photo courtesy of Coronado Soroptimist.\nThe mission of the world-wide Soroptimist organization is to advance opportunities for women and girls as they seek educational advancement and financial independence. The preeminent program supporting these goals is the Live Your Dream (LYD) Scholarship awarded annually to a woman who has faced significant challenges but is successfully pursuing a two or four-year degree. Most clubs award just one scholarship\, but the Coronado Soroptimist Club values this program so much that they award two secondary LYD awards. \nThese sizeable awards would not be possible without the community’s support of their fundraising efforts. As an acknowledgement and thank you to the Coronado community for their generosity\, the Soroptimists extend an invitation to this year’s Live Your Dream (LYD) award ceremony which will be held on Wednesday\, Jan. 14 from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Coronado VFW (557 Orange Ave.). The award winners will be recognized for their determination to provide a better future for themselves and their families.

SUMMARY:Democratic Club meeting with guest speaker Jeremy Addis-Mills
DESCRIPTION:Start the new year informed and empowered:\nSocial media training at Coronado Democratic Club’s January meeting \nThe Coronado Democratic Club invites like-minded individuals interested in constructive ways to make a difference to its first general meeting of 2026 on Saturday\, January 17\, featuring a timely and practical program on using social media as a tool for civic engagement. Doors open at 10:30 am\, with the meeting running from 11 am to 12:30 pm in the Winn Room at the Coronado Library. \nThe featured speaker\, Jeremy Addis-Mills\, is the founder of Digital Impact!\, a communications firm that helps organizations and individuals communicate more effectively online. His presentation\, “Become a Social Media Activist\,” will focus on how everyday people can use social media thoughtfully and responsibly to share information\, connect with others\, and make their voices heard on issues that matter to them. \nRather than focusing on politics as conflict\, this training emphasizes communication\, influence\, and participation — offering practical guidance on crafting messages\, engaging audiences\, and understanding why social media has become such a powerful platform for community dialogue. \nThe meeting will also include the election of club officers for 2026. \nCommunity members interested in learning how to better navigate today’s digital landscape — regardless of experience level — are encouraged to attend.

SUMMARY:FILM FORUM CORONADO: "The Last of Sheila" (1973)
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival\, presents FILM FORUM CORONADO\, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 pm in the library’s Winn Room. Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards\, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. \nJanuary 21: The Last of Sheila (1973\, PG\, 120 min) \nComposer Stephen Sondheim and actor Anthony Perkins crafted a deliciously bitchy little bonbon that takes assault on Hollywood secrets. A nasty producer (James Coburn) lures a sordid group of friends to holiday on his yacht — aiming to unmask one of them as the hit-and-run killer of his wife Sheila. The star-studded cast includes James Mason\, Dyan Cannon\, Richard Benjamin\, Raquel Welch and Joan Hackett.
