In 2003\, the City of Coronado and community members developed the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan to “provide a policy and regulatory bridge between the city of Coronado General Plan and individual\, project-level development.” The City Council approved the Specific Plan in 2004 after multiple community workshops and citizen involvement and have made amendments to the plan through 2014. According to Chapter VI\, the Commercial Zone Design Criteria\, “the purpose of the design criteria is to protect the special identity of the commercial areas of Coronado\,” in particular\, the special “village” character. \nThe forum will be led by Phil Monroe and other members of the Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan Committee who will discuss the development and history of the plan. \n

DESCRIPTION:The URT WOMP Bodysurf Comp is back! \nHuman torpedoes from all over the world will be flocking to Coronado’s legendary water wall at North Beach to prove their sea worth. North Beach is situated perfectly to receive south swells and early September is when the souths are running. \nWe are teaming up with the non-profit One More Wave to breathe life into the 11th Annual URT WOMP. Proceeds from all event registrations will be going to their mission of providing wounded veterans with surf therapy and customized surf equipment. \nYouth Division: Ages 8-15 (Max 48 Contestants) \nAdult Division: Women and men compete together but are judges separately (Max 96 Contestants) \nAll participants will receive an event shirt\, breakfast burrito from Clayton’s MTO\, water and a grab bag. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection is held the second and fourth Saturday of each month\, from 9 am to 2 pm at the Public Services Facility\, located at 101 B Avenue\, and is available to Coronado residents only. No business or contractor-generated waste is permitted. \nHousehold products containing toxic chemicals become hazardous waste when you decide to dispose of them. Never throw hazardous products in the trash\, as the toxic chemicals may harm the environment and sanitation workers\, and start fires in trash trucks. Never pour hazardous products into a sink or storm drain. It is dangerous and they will end up in our environment polluting the air\, water and soil. The City of Coronado’s HHW program is available so that all residents in the community can safely dispose of their toxic\, hazardous waste. \nMore details HERE.

The moderator will be Professor Emeritus of Political Science Carl Luna from Mesa College. In 2014 the Association of Community College Trustees recognized him as one of the 5 top community college professors in the country.   He is a frequent non-partisan commentator on politics\, giving almost two thousand  interviews to local\, national and international media including public radio and TV\, CBS\, NBC\, the Associated Press  and the BBC.  Dr. Luna has provided extensive analysis of local and national politics for over 20 years for San Diego KPBS Radio & Television and has been San Diego Fox5’s political analyst for over a decade.  He has written and blogged extensively for the San Diego Union Tribune and San Diego City Beat Magazine and is a contributing author to the anthology of presidential biographies\, Public Pillars\, Private Lives and a revised volume on the presidency:  Imperial Presidents: The Rise of Executive Power from Roosevelt to Obama.   Dr. Luna is co-chair of Restoring Respect\, a community initiative promoting greater civility in San Diego dialogue supported by a consortium of academic institutions and community groups. In this capacity Dr. Luna organized and conducted ten Restoring Respect conferences attended by hundreds of San Diego community members\, students and local educational and civic leaders to participate in panels and discussions including  nationally recognized speakers In 2014 he became the first director of the Institute for Civil Civic Engagement\, formed between USD and the San Diego Community College District’s City\, Continuing Education\, Mesa and Miramar Colleges. Over the past 30 years Dr. Luna has given dozens of community presentations on political topics ranging from citizen-initiative zoning to threats facing American democracy  to a wide variety of community groups and facilitated numerous community discussions and public debates across San Diego.  In 1999-2000 Dr. Luna  served as a senior Fulbright Scholar lecturing on international relations and economics at Nizhny Novgorod State University in the Russian Federation. Dr. Luna had a front row seat to the rise of Putin and the fall of Russian democracy\, which has informed his academic and civic pursuits ever since.

DESCRIPTION:Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection is held the second and fourth Saturday of each month\, from 9 am to 2 pm at the Public Services Facility\, located at 101 B Avenue\, and is available to Coronado residents only. No business or contractor-generated waste is permitted. \nHousehold products containing toxic chemicals become hazardous waste when you decide to dispose of them. Never throw hazardous products in the trash\, as the toxic chemicals may harm the environment and sanitation workers\, and start fires in trash trucks. Never pour hazardous products into a sink or storm drain. It is dangerous and they will end up in our environment polluting the air\, water and soil. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. Thank you for your support. \nEvery Sunday at 11 am & Thursday at 1 pm\nLocation: Coronado Historical Association\,\n1100 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nAdmission: Adults $20 | Children (12 & under) $5\nBUY TICKETS HERE\nTours are approximately 90 minutes and two miles at a comfortable pace. They are appropriate for young and old alike. Only certified service animals are allowed. This is an outdoor tour. Masks are optional for fully vaccinated persons with the booster shot\, and required for those who are not. \nOnline tour sales close at 10 am the day of the tour and are nonrefundable.
