DESCRIPTION:The United States Navy is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the aircraft carrier in 2022. America has been\, and always will be\, a naval power. The legacy of the aircraft carrier over the past century is one of innovation\, evolution and dominance. Since the 1940s\, the Navy’s ability to project power and deter aggression around the world has been built around the aircraft carrier task force. This presentation by Capt. Ralph “Rafe” Arnott  USN (ret) and U.S.S. Midway volunteer will illuminate the development and the continuing evolution of the aircraft carrier since 1922. \n\nCapt. Ralph “Rafe” Arnott  USN (ret) received his Navy Wings in March of 1970 and then reported to Naval Air Station Lemoore\, CA for training in the A-7 Corsair II aircraft. He made two combat deployments to Vietnam completing over 200 combat missions flying from the USS Oriskany as a member of Attack Squadron 155. He was stationed at NAS Lemoore on and off over the next 20 years in various squadrons\, the last as Commanding Officer of VA-146 making an around-the-world deployment on USS Kitty Hawk. While assigned as ship’s company on USS Ranger\, he worked in the Combat Information Center\, and also qualified as Officer–of-the-Deck underway. During a carrier overhaul in Bremerton\, WA he met and married his wife Susan. \nShore assignments included Naval War College in Newport\, RI\, where he also received a master’s degree in International Relations\, Yokosuka\, Japan\, on the staff of Commander Seventh Fleet embarked in USS Blue Ridge\, and The Pentagon Washington D.C.  His last assignment was as Chief-of-Staff\, Commander Strike Fighter Wing Pacific\, NAS Lemoore\, where he retired from the Navy in October 1993. \nAfter providing training support for the F/A-18 aircraft for two years he was hired by Fedex and spent the next 15 years flying from Memphis\, TN to most every state in the union. Upon reaching the mandatory retirement age\, he retired from Fedex in July of 2011 as a B-727 Captain. He then began volunteering at the USS Midway museum as a Docent and is a member of the Midway Speakers Bureau.

SUMMARY:Free Summer Shuttle Kick-Off Event
DESCRIPTION:City leaders and sponsors of Coronado’s Free Summer Shuttle program invite the community to the 2022 season kick-off event on Friday\, May 27\, where a colorful new bus wrap will be introduced. The new wrap is a departure from the red vintage Volkswagen bus design that had covered the shuttle buses for the past six years. The design may feel familiar to many in the community as it is based on a public art mural installed on the old Cora Mart building until Vons started recent improvements. \nThe kick-off event will be held on the first day of service on the Friday before Memorial Day at 10 am at Spreckels Park. After the kick-off ceremony\, the community is invited to take a ride. Light refreshments will be served. The City worked with Discover Coronado\, which funds the wraps every year\, to perfect the design. The mural is a wavy image of the word Coronado in all caps set on a background of shades of blue. Each letter contains an iconic image of the City such as the Hotel del Coronado\, the Village Theatre and the beach. \nThe Free Summer Shuttle program will run from May 27 to Sept. 5. The City contracts with the Metropolitan Transit System to operate the Free Summer Shuttle for Village bus service at 15-minute intervals along the existing 904 Route. Buses run from 9 am to 9:30 pm Sunday through Thursday\, and one hour later Friday and Saturday. There will be free MTS day passes available for Coronado Cays residents and special service on the Fourth of July. \nVisit CommentCoronado.org for more details.

SUMMARY:Pysanka Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Learn the Ukrainian art of Pysanka Egg Decorating in this hands-on class from instructor Adriana Wrzesniewski. You’ll create one pysanka egg from start to finish. \nAll pysanky are created the same way\, but the designs and colors vary from egg to egg. All designs are an accumulation of ancient symbols and current motifs arranged in different patterns and differing color schemes. Each pysanka is an individual piece of art work\, since no two eggs are exactly alike. Originally the eggs were kept full to keep the mystical powers intact. Today\, most eggs are emptied and clean to eliminate any worries about smell or broken eggs. The designs are the most important for the well-wishing gifts. Pysanky can be displayed in a multitude of ways from grouping on a plate\, in a bowl or clear vase\, individually in stands\, candle or boiled-egg holders\, and even hanging with embroidery floss and tassles. Pysanky were often placed in the corners of the home and in the thatched roofs to ward off fire\, lightning and high winds. Broken pysanka shells are sprinkled into the soil to ensure healthy crops. \nThe class will last 2.5 hours and all materials will be provided. Space is limited. Registration is recommended. Register at cplevents.org to reserve your seat for this event.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic Coronado
DESCRIPTION:One of the best ways to experience the history of Coronado is to go on a historic walking tour. This is the secret that Coronado locals know: it takes time to sense the past. When you slow down\, you have a chance to see\, hear\, and remember this place that Hollywood stars\, princes\, and presidents have enjoyed. Everywhere you look in this charming beach town\, you find history. And\, that history is easiest to see on foot – when you have a chance to linger in front of a tiny\, shingled house\, perhaps\, and meet the resident as he comes out into the yard to water his roses and tells you about the multiple generations who have lived in the home. Or\, when you seemingly stumble upon the magical house from which the Wizard of Oz was born. \nWe’re proud to host you on Coronado’s premier walking tour. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. Thank you for your support. \nEvery Sunday at 11 am & Thursday at 1 pm\nLocation: Coronado Historical Association\,\n1100 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nAdmission: Adults $20 | Children (12 & under) $5\nBUY TICKETS HERE\nTours are approximately 90 minutes and two miles at a comfortable pace. They are appropriate for young and old alike. Only certified service animals are allowed. This is an outdoor tour. Masks are optional for fully vaccinated persons with the booster shot\, and required for those who are not. \nOnline tour sales close at 10 am the day of the tour and are nonrefundable.
