SUMMARY:Coronado Community READ Event: Art with Joel Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Join Joel Anderson for an afternoon of painting! Follow along with Joel as you paint a giraffe as part of the Coronado Community Read. This program is geared towards elementary school students\, but all are welcome. \n“A 31-year-old artist\, author\, international speaker\, ambassador\, and philanthropist from Fallbrook\, California\, Joel Anderson creates in acrylic\, mixed media\, digital media\, animation\, glass\, and video production. ‘My passion is for my art to make you smile. I enjoy using bright colors. When I hear music\, I see color in the notes and sometimes that will show up in my art. When I paint portraits\, I paint upside down so I do not get distracted by the emotions of the eyes of my subject. This way I can paint the shapes and shadows. In the end I will flip it over to finish the eyes and hope to capture the soul. I draw for the children at school assemblies. It makes me happy when students say my art has inspired them to be an artist. I hope to continue travel for inspiration and to share my art around the globe.'” \nJoel Anderson has been to Peru\, China\, Japan\, Canada\, and across the USA where he has spoken on autism\, inclusion\, and friendship. Anderson’s art has been featured in The California Museum in Sacramento\, The National Art Center of Tokyo in Tokyo\, Japan\, The H.H. Dorjie Chang Buddha II Cultural & Art Museum in Covina\, The Soho Gallery for Digital Art in NYC\, and more. \nRegistration is required\, visit cplevents.org to register. This program is sponsored by the “Jim and Bette Sherman Fund”.

SUMMARY:Coronado Community READ Event: The World in 1938
DESCRIPTION:Join University of San Diego professor Dr. Ali Gheissari as he discusses the state of the world in 1938 and draws parallels to the world we are living in today. 1938 saw Nazi Germany building up for World War II with their invasion of Czechoslovakia. It saw the dramatization of Orson Wells’ “War of the World” unfold live on the radio- causing a panic as people believed it was a news broadcast\, not a play. Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in an upset that captivated the country. The United States was in the middle of a recession that occurred as the Great Depression muddled on. Vast dust storms swept the Midwest leading to migration to the coasts. 1938 was a time of uncertainty across the globe\, but also a time where news was able to travel faster and farther than before\, bringing people across the globe together quicker than ever. Gheissari will lead a discussion on how the world looked in 1938 and how it reflects across history.
