SUMMARY:"Operation Underworld" Author in Person
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 10th at 7 pm\, the Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with Warwick’s\, will host Matthew Black as he discusses and signs his new book\, Operation Underworld: How the Mafia and U.S. Government Teamed Up to Win World War II. This event is open to the public\, seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Guaranteed preferred seating is available with purchase of Operation Underground through Warwick’s Bookstore. Please visit www.warwicks.com/event/black-2023 or call them at 858-454-0347 for more information. \nMatthew Black is a labor and crime historian who was recruited by James P. Hoffa’s office in 2016 to author Dave Beck – A Teamsters Life. Black has also worked as a staff writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune and has written articles for Alaska Airlines magazine. He has published dozens of articles on History101.com\, where he has individually brought some 42 million readers to his work. Born and raised in Seattle\, he is a graduate of the University of Washington with an honors degree in history. While he travels the country and the world at a feverish pace in search of stories\, he calls San Diego home\, where he lives with his wife and daughter. \nAbout Operation Underworld: In 1942\, a rational fear was mounting that New York Harbor was vulnerable to sabotage. If the waterfront was infested with German and Italian agents then the U.S. Navy needed a recourse just as insidious to secure it. \nNaval intelligence officer\, Commander Charles Radcliffe Haffenden had the solution: recruit as his own spies\, members of La Cosa Nostra. Pier to pier\, no one terrified the longshoremen\, stevedores\, shopkeepers\, and boat captains along the harbor better than the Mafia gangs of New York\, who controlled the docks in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Haffenden was prepared to make a deal with the devil–the man who put “organized” into organized crime. Even from his cell in Dannemora State Prison\, former Public Enemy #1\, Charles “Lucky” Luciano still had tremendous power. Luciano was willing to wield it for Haffenden. But he wanted something in return—Luciano’s contacts in Italy to track the Nazis’ movements. \nOperation Underworld is a tale of espionage and crime like no other\, the unbelievable\, first-ever account of the Allied war effort’s clandestine coalition between the Mafia and the U.S. Government to protect New York\, vanquish the Nazis by taking the fight to the enemy in the 1943 U.S. invasion of Sicily. It was an ingenious strategy carried out by some of history’s most infamous\, improbable\, and unsung heroes on both sides of the law. It was a Faustian bargain that brought homefront enemies together but\, as journalist and crime historian Matthew Black reveals\, one that ultimately succeeded in helping the Allies win World War II.

SUMMARY:Biography & Memoir Book Club: The Yellow House
DESCRIPTION:Join the Through Their Eyes Book Club is reading The Yellow House by Sarah Broom. In 1961\, Sarah M. Broom’s mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and built her world inside of it. Ivory Mae raised twelve children and Yellow House would become Ivory Mae’s thirteenth and most unruly child. \nBroom’s The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America’s most mythologized cities. This is the story of a mother’s struggle against a house’s entropy\, and that of a prodigal daughter who left home only to reckon with the pull that home exerts\, even after the Yellow House was wiped off the map after Hurricane Katrina.(Amazon)

SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: "It's Kind of a Funny Story" by Ned Vizzini
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by his own experiences\, Ned Vizzini‘s 2006 novel It’s Kind of a Funny Story follows the adventures of a teenage Craig Gilner\, who is checked into a psychiatric hospital after reaching out for help. Vizzini’s book\, which critics found believable and honest\, was selected by the American Library Association as one of the Best Books for Young Adults in 2007. It was brought to film audiences in 2010’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story\, starring Keir Gilchrist\, Emma Roberts\, and Zach Galifianakis. As Craig\, Gilcrist brought the character’s struggles and warmth to the screen in a film that sidestepped psych-ward comedy clichés and leaned into its strong cast and the tender moments between the three.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Through Their Eyes Book Club in reading “Between Two Kingdoms” by Suleika Jaouard. Just a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday\, a diagnosis: leukemia\, with a 35 percent chance of survival. He wrote two well-reviewed nonfiction books\, The Day After World War III and Small Fortunes\, and then moved into writing for television dramas\, including “Law & Order” (50+ episodes)\, “Blue Bloods\,” and “Law & Order: SVU.”  He has won two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and an Emmy for his work on “Law & Order.”  He lives in Manhattan\, NY and Manhattan Beach\, California. Wealth Management is his first novel. \nAbout the Book\, Wealth Management:  \nFor fans of Jess Walter and Gary Shteyngart\, this is a financial thriller featuring three Ivy League MBAs who must put their lopsided love triangle aside to snare international terrorists. \nIn the lush world-banking capital of Geneva\, Switzerland\, three young wealth managers (Catherine\, Majid\, and Rafe) are handling investments for clients with dubious pedigrees. When problems with troubled investments are “fixed” by murders and bombs\, they come to suspect that their clients are Mafiosi and terrorists\, but by then they are accomplices\, are under threat\, and have no easy way to back out. \nTheir efforts to save themselves — and innocent lives — are complicated by their being in a love triangle\, by one of them secretly working with the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence to investigate the other two\, and by the unexpected appearance of a detective from Nigeria who may or may not be in league with terrorists himself.

SUMMARY:Lessons in Chemistry Author Event with Bonnie Garmas
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 24 at 7:00 p.m.\, Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with Warwick’s bookstore\, will host Bonnie Garmus as she discusses and signs her #1 New York Times bestselling book\, Lessons in Chemistry in the Grand Room at the Spreckels Center. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Limited preferred seating is available with purchase of Lessons in Chemistry through Warwick’s bookstore. Please visit https://www.warwicks.com/event/garmus-2023 or call the store at 858-454-0347 for more information. \nBonnie Garmus is a copywriter and creative director who has worked widely in the fields of technology\, medicine\, and education. She’s an open-water swimmer\, a rower\, and mother to two pretty amazing daughters. Born in California and most recently from Seattle\, she currently lives in London with her husband and her dog\, 99. \nLessons in Chemistry: Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact\, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely\, brilliant\, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with – of all things – her mind. True chemistry results. \nBut like science\, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother\, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. \nElizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows\, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out\, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. \nLaugh-out-loud funny\, shrewdly observant\, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters\, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

To purchase tickets and reserve your seats\, please register at cplevents.org. Don’t delay – seating is limited! \nT. Jefferson Parker was born in Los Angeles and has lived all his life in Southern California. He was educated in public schools in Orange County\, and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California\, Irvine\, in 1976. His writing career began in 1978\, with a job as a cub reporter on the weekly newspaper\, The Newport Ensign. After covering police\, city hall and cultural stories for the Ensign\, Parker moved on to the Daily Pilot newspaper\, where he won three Orange County Press Club awards for his articles. Parker’s first novel\, Laguna Heat\, was written on evenings and weekends while he worked as a reporter\, and was published to rave reviews and made into an HBO movie starring Harry Hamlin\, Jason Robards and Rip Torn. He has written over 28 novels. When not working\, Parker spends his time with his family\, hiking\, fishing\, beachcombing\, and exercising his dogs. He cannot pass by a body of water without wanting to fish it. He also enjoys rock hounding\, cycling and being outdoors. \n\n\n\nAbout Desperation Reef:  \nJen Stonebreaker hasn’t entered into a big-wave surfing competition since witnessing her husband’s tragic death twenty-five years ago at the Monsters of the Mavericks. Now\, Jen is ready to tackle those same Monsters with her twin sons Casey and Brock\, who have become competitive surfers in a perilous sport. \n\n\n\nWhen he’s not riding waves\, modeling for surfing magazines\, or posting viral content for his many fans\, Casey Stonebreaker spends his days helping with the family restaurant — catching fish in the morning and bartending at night. Casey’s love for the ocean and his willingness to expose illegal poachers on his platforms puts him on a collision course with a crime syndicate eager to destroy anyone threatening their business. \nOutspoken Brock Stonebreaker couldn’t be more different from his twin. The founder of Breath of Life\, a church and rescue mission that assists with natural disasters that no one else will touch\, Brock has lived an adventurous and sometimes violent life. Not everyone appreciates the work that Brock’s Breath of Life mission accomplishes\, and threats to destroy his mission—and his family—swirl around him. \nAs the big-wave contest draws closer\, a huge\, late fall swell is headed toward the Pacific coastline. Jen’s fears gnaw at her — fear for herself\, for her sons\, for what this competition will mean for the rest of her life.

SUMMARY:Author Sandra Bonura Discusses Her Newest Book on the Spreckels Family
DESCRIPTION:After immigrating to America and becoming involved in the development of America’s sugar industry\, Claus Spreckels became one of the richest Americans in history. He triumphed in an era rife with cronyism and corruption and ultimately transformed California’s agriculture\, industry and transportation. But there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. \nLocal author Sandra Bonura gives us a rags to riches story of this colorful and controversial immigrant who started the legacy known in Coronado\, San Diego\, and beyond. Join Sandra Bonura on Friday\, August 30 at 1pm in the Winn Room as she discusses her newest book and all that went into writing this biography. \nAbout the Book \nClaus Spreckels (1828–1908) emigrated from his homeland of Germany to the United States with only seventy-five cents in his pocket\, built a sugar empire\, and became one of the richest Americans in history alongside John D. Rockefeller\, Warren Buffett\, and Bill Gates. Migrating to San Francisco after the gold rush\, Spreckels built the largest sugar beet factory of its kind in the United States. His sugar beet production in the Salinas Valley changed the focus of valley agriculture from dry to irrigated crops\, resulting in the vast modern agricultural-industrial economy in today’s “Salad Bowl of the World.” When Spreckels gave America its first sugar cube\, he became the “Sugar King.” \nThe indomitable Spreckels was a colorful and complicated character on both sides of the Pacific. A kingpin in the development of the Hawai‘i-California sugarcane industry\, he wielded a clenched fist over Hawai‘i’s economy for nearly two decades after occupying a position of unrivaled power and political influence with the Hawaiian monarchy\, while also advancing major technology developments on the islands. The Sugar King’s legacy continued as the Spreckels family developed large portions of California\, building and breaking monopolies in agriculture\, shipping\, railroading\, finance\, real estate\, horse breeding\, utilities\, streetcars\, and water infrastructure\, and building entire towns and cities from infrastructure to superstructure. \nIn The Sugar King of California Sandra E. Bonura tells the rags-to-riches story of Spreckels’s role in the developments of the sugarcane industry in the American West and across the Pacific\, triumphing in a milieu rife with cronyism and corruption and ultimately transforming California’s industry and labor. Harshly criticized by his enemies for ruthless business tactics but loved by his employees\, he was unapologetic in his quest for wealth\, asserting “Spreckels’s success is California’s success.” But there’s always a cost for single-minded determination; the legendary family quarrels even included a murder charge. Spreckels’s biography is one of business triumph and tragedy\, a portrait of a family torn apart by money\, jealousy\, and ego. \nAbout the Author \nHistorian Dr. Sandra Bonura is a retired professor who is busy on her 2nd career resurrecting the forgotten stories of overlooked historical figures. She is a frequent storyteller and lecturer on the importance of using a multitude of primary sources to gain perspective on major historical events. Sandee is an award winning author of eight published works based on found archival treasures. \nRELATED \n“The Sugar King of California” Gives Deeper Insight Into the Spreckels Family

SUMMARY:An Evening with Sarah Federman
DESCRIPTION:The Library\, with the Worldview Project and the San Diego Diplomacy Council\, present an evening with Dr. Sarah Federman\, author of Last Train to Auschwitz: The French National Railways and the Journey to Accountability. Join us on September 11\, 2024\, at 6:30 pm for an insightful discussion and a unique opportunity to meet the author in person. A “compelling blend of victims’ narratives and rigorous historical and legal analysis\, making a significant contribution to our understanding of corporate accountability and transitional justice\,” according to Leigh Payne of the University of Oxford\, this book shares the story of how the French National Railways were complicit in the Holocaust. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAbout the Book \nIn the immediate decades after World War II\, the French National Railways (SNCF) was celebrated for its acts of wartime heroism. However\, recent debates and litigation have revealed the ways the SNCF worked as an accomplice to the Third Reich and was actively complicit in the deportation of 76\,000 Jews and other civilians to death camps. Sarah Federman delves into the interconnected roles—perpetrator\, victim\, and hero—the company took on during the harrowing years of the Holocaust. Grounded in history and case law\, Last Train to Auschwitz traces the SNCF’s journey toward accountability in France and the United States\, culminating in a multimillion-dollar settlement paid by the French government on behalf of the railways. The poignant and informative testimonies of survivors illuminate the long-term effects of the railroad’s impact on individuals\, leading the company to make overdue amends. In a time when corporations are increasingly granted the same rights as people\, Federman’s detailed account demonstrates the obligations businesses have to atone for aiding and abetting governments in committing atrocities. This volume highlights the necessity of corporate integrity and will be essential reading for those called to engage in the difficult work of responding to past harms. \nAbout the Author \nSarah Federman is an author\, educator\, and conflict resolution practitioner. Prior to this work\, she spent a decade as an international executive working with clients such as Google and the NFL. A job transfer from Manhattan to Paris led her to an encounter with her own name on a Holocaust memorial wall. This moment prompted her to turn her attention to helping people avoid mass violence\, focusing specifically on corporate complicity. She is now an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the Joan B Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego.

SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: "Postcards From The Edge" by Carrie Fisher
DESCRIPTION:The Spoilers Book Club reads books that have been turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \n \n“Postcards From The Edge” by Carrie Fisher\n\nWhen we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale\, she’s feeling like “something on the bottom of someone’s shoe\, and not even someone interesting.” Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation\, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a “drug hospital.” \nJust as Fisher’s first film role—the precocious teenager in Shampoo—echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing\, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. This stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne’s vivid\, excruciatingly funny experiences inside the clinic and as she comes to terms with life in the outside world. “Postcards from the Edge” is more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers—and delights—of all our addictions\, from money and success to sex and insecurity. \nFilm\n“Postcards from the Edge” (1990)\nRated R\nRuntime: 1h 41m

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Firekeeper's Daughter" by Angeline Boulley
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering. Registration is not required. \n \nFor our September meeting\, we will discuss the 2022 Printz Medal winner Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley\, a groundbreaking young adult thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community. \nAbout Firekeeper’s Daughter:  \nEighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in\, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college\, but when family tragedy strikes\, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie\, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. \nYet even as Daunis falls for Jamie\, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder\, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. \nReluctantly\, Daunis agrees to go undercover\, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined\, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time\, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. \nNow\, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing\, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community\, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \nEvent Details\n\nIn the wake of a summer storm\, terror descends…David Drayton\, his son Billy\, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there\, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves\, a religious zealot\, Mrs. Carmody\, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly\, staying in the store may prove fatal\, and the Draytons\, along with store employee Ollie Weeks\, Amanda Dumfries\, Irene Reppler\, and Dan Miller\, attempt to make their escape.
