DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host their second annual Family Picnic & Scavenger Hunt on Saturday\, Aug. 15\, from noon to 2 p.m. outside the Coronado Public Library. The free event will celebrate the end of summer with books\, scavenger hunts\, prizes\, and activities for all ages. \nFamilies can bring a picnic\, relax in the park\, and participate in age-appropriate scavenger hunts throughout the Library. This year’s event includes new activities for young readers and teens. \nFor elementary school students\, the Friends’ Reading Dragon Hunt will feature Friends’ Reading Dragons hidden throughout the Children’s Library. Inspired by Imagine Dragon (“Ima”)\, the dragon sculpture outside the Library\, the hunt encourages young readers to explore the collection\, meet Library staff\, and discover Library resources. The first 15 children to find a dragon can take one home as a keepsake. \nMiddle and high school students will have their own scavenger hunts\, with challenges and hidden clues designed for their age groups. Everyone who completes a scavenger hunt will receive a prize and be entered into a raffle for additional giveaways. \nIn addition to the option to bring a picnic lunch\, the Friends are also offering a special lunch option for current members. Friends members may reserve a Which Wich lunch for $5 per person. Reservations and payment must be received by Thursday\, Aug. 13\, by emailing events@coronadofol.org. \nThose interested in joining the Friends can sign up for a Family Membership\, which includes a complimentary Friends picnic blanket while supplies last. \nBecome a Friends of the Coronado Public Library member.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP by Sept. 12 \nThe Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host its first Friends Member Meet & Greet on Saturday\, September 19\, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Coronado Public Library\, inviting members to come together for an evening of art\, spoken word\, family activities\, refreshments\, and an opportunity to see their support at work throughout the Library. \nThe evening will take guests into different areas of the Library\, each offering something to experience and discover. \nCoronado resident Prince Kofi Sefa-Boakye\nIn the Spreckels Reading Room\, longtime Coronado resident Prince Kofi Sefa-Boakye\, owner of Prince’s Art Gallery\, will curate an exhibition featuring the work of Ghanaian artist Paul Adjei. \nSefa-Boakye’s mission through his gallery is to support African artists and introduce Western collectors and home buyers to authentic African-made art. His approach celebrates different artistic styles\, cultural influences\, and the stories behind the work. \n \nFor the September 19 exhibition\, Sefa-Boakye will introduce Coronado to the work of Adjei\, who is originally from Kumasi\, Ghana\, and studied at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design. Adjei is known for a bold and meticulous style incorporating acrylic\, mixed media\, and three-dimensional painting. His work celebrates African beauty while drawing on values central to his life and art: faith\, hard work\, and family. \n \nGuests will have the opportunity to view and purchase Adjei’s artwork during the evening. One piece has been generously donated\, with 100% of the proceeds from its sale going to support a Library-selected cause. \nThe evening will also introduce guests to spoken word artist Eric Pinder\, a San Diego-based poet whose relationship with poetry began with a seventh-grade classroom assignment. \nGrowing up in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, Pinder was surrounded by music and creativity from an early age. What began with a natural ability to remember songs and lyrics eventually developed into his own writing. Encouraged by a teacher after writing his first poem\, Pinder began to recognize poetry as more than an assignment\, it could be a way to express\, process\, and connect. \nHis path eventually brought him from Miami to San Diego\, where he found a new community and continued pursuing poetry and music. Today\, Pinder draws on his personal journey\, faith\, music\, and life experiences to create work centered on connection and hope. His spoken word performance will bring another creative voice to the evening and an opportunity for meaningful conversation. \nThe event is designed for families as well. The Children’s Library will become a Family Corner\, with pizza\, a balloon artist\, temporary tattoos\, and activities for young guests. Earth has been destroyed by a comet\, and only a few hundred scientists and their children ― among them Petra and her family ― have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race. \nHundreds of years later\, Petra wakes to this new planet ― and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey\, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard ― or purged them altogether. \nPetra alone now carries the stories of our past\, and with them\, any hope for our future.
