SUMMARY:Jack Carr Author Event
DESCRIPTION:#1 New York Times bestselling author and former Navy SEAL Jack Carr will be in person in Coronado in a Library event on the evening of May 19. Jack Carr’s first book\, The Terminal List\, is set in Coronado and will be aired on Amazon Prime Video in July this year starring Chris Pratt. He is also the author of True Believer\, Savage Son\, and The Devil’s Hand and the host of the Danger Close Podcast. Carr will be discussing his latest book\, the thriller In the Blood. To accommodate a larger audience\, the Library will be using the Grand Room at the next door Spreckels Center\, to host the event from 7 to 8:30 pm. Entry is free on a first come\, first served basis. Books will be available for sale at the event for the author to sign. \nAbout the book\, In the Blood: \nA woman boards a plane in the African country of Burkina Faso having just completed a targeted assassination for the state of Israel. Two minutes later\, her plane is blown out of the sky. \nOver 6\,000 miles away\, former Navy SEAL James Reece watches the names and pictures of the victims on cable news. One face triggers a distant memory of a Mossad operative attached to the CIA years earlier in Iraq–a woman with ties to the intelligence services of two nations…a woman Reece thought he would never see again. \nReece enlists friends new and old across the globe to track down her killer\, unaware that he may be walking into a deadly trap. \nThis program is free and seating is general-admission; however\, if you would like to pre-order a book and get priority seating\, please call Warwick’s at 858-454-0347.

SUMMARY:Exclusive Luncheon and Talk with Lauren McBrayer\, Author of "Like a House on Fire"
DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\nLauren McBrayer will discuss her electric and seductive new book\, “Like a House on Fire\,” at this intimate luncheon in support of the Friends of the Library. This Kirkus Reviews starred book is about a woman at a turning point in her life\, and what happens when she discovers the spark that makes her feel whole again. This novel is a razor-sharp look at love\, motherhood\, marriage\, and identity that pushes us to wonder what it really means to have what you thought you wanted\, and yet come to realize that there’s so much more. \nThe $40 ticket includes lunch and a hardcover copy of the book. Proceeds support free programs at the library such as lectures\, workshops\, classes\, concerts and children’s programs. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and a chance to have the author sign books. This event is in partnership with Warwick’s Bookstore. To purchase tickets and reserve your seats\, please visit cplevents.org. Don’t delay – seating is limited! \nAbout the Author: \nLauren McBrayer is a graduate of Yale with a law degree from UC Berkeley. A working mom of three\, she is the head of business for an entertainment company in Los Angeles. “Like a House on Fire” is her adult debut. \nReview Quotes: \n“Wise\, witty\, and tender\, Like a House on Fire is a multilayered examination of connection and desire that artfully tackles the question: what if the person you are isn’t the one you set out to be? It’s beautifully written with deep empathy and vivid characters. I was utterly seduced and satisfied by this book.” – Camille Perri\, author of When Katie Met Cassidy and The Assistants \n“Like a House on Fire is an un-put-downable novel about motherhood\, middle-aged malaise\, questioning identity and the choices women are forced to make. I found parts of myself on every page; every woman will find herself along the way as they turn the pages of Merit’s life and get lost in McBrayer’s raw\, emotional and stunning prose. And the ending… well\, I’m still shaking. Every woman should read this book. Alert your book club\, this one will bring out the discussion\, the confessions and the wine.” – Elyssa Friedland\, author of Last Summer at the Golden Hotel \n“Humming with tension and the volcanic rumble of mid-life coming of age\, Lauren McBrayer’s Like a House on Fire explores queerness against the backdrop of rekindled ambition\, marriage\, motherhood and the various trappings of hetero-normative expectations. This book will wake you up and turn you on.” – Rebecca Woolf\, author of All of This and Rockabye

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library Book Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will once again be holding a Book Sale at the same time as the annual Flower Show. There will be changes\, however\, as the Book Sale will be held for one day only on April 23\, from 9 am until 4 pm. The Book Sale location will be held on the grounds outside the Winn Room adjacent to the Coronado Library. The usual types of items will be for sale: books of all types including non-fiction and text-books\, children’s books\, art books\, best-sellers and mysteries\, collectible books\, audio-books\, DVDs\, and various gift items. \nThe change to a one-day sale is being caused by several reasons. Donations of books have not been accepted recently due to Covid\, so the inventory is lower. At the same time\, the increasing costs of renting tents\, tables\, and other equipment associated with conducting the multi-day book-sale has reduced the income that is raised to help support the Coronado Library. Thus\, setting up at Spreckels Park with the usual rented equipment for three days was not deemed the best way to achieve our fundraising goals. The one-day sale should still provide some revenue while sharing previously stored books to community and area readers. \nThe Friends of the Coronado Public Library was formed in 1970 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization to support the Coronado Library and its various activities. This includes a host of public programs\, children’s and teen activities\, concerts\, art\, and certain collections. \nBy buying books at the Book Sale\, or at the Second Hand Bookshop at the library\, you help support the Coronado Library\, as well as enjoying a good or instructive read. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host an annual Membership Meeting at the Coronado Public Library Winn Room on Friday April 22 from 5:30 until 7 pm. This is an important meeting for the Friends of the Library as a vote will be held among the membership in attendance to approve the slate of officers for the Friends’ Board. Proposed Bylaws changes also need to be approved\, making changes to membership levels and life memberships. Approximately one-half hour of business should be part of the membership meeting business. \nCollectible books will be for sale after the meeting\, and a raffle will also be held. The Membership meeting precedes the Saturday Book Sale which will be held for one day only on April 23\, from 9 am until 4 pm. SUMMARY:Coronado Community READ Event: Art with Joel Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Join Joel Anderson for an afternoon of painting! Follow along with Joel as you paint a giraffe as part of the Coronado Community Read. This program is geared towards elementary school students\, but all are welcome. \n“A 31-year-old artist\, author\, international speaker\, ambassador\, and philanthropist from Fallbrook\, California\, Joel Anderson creates in acrylic\, mixed media\, digital media\, animation\, glass\, and video production. ‘My passion is for my art to make you smile. I enjoy using bright colors. When I hear music\, I see color in the notes and sometimes that will show up in my art. When I paint portraits\, I paint upside down so I do not get distracted by the emotions of the eyes of my subject. This way I can paint the shapes and shadows. In the end I will flip it over to finish the eyes and hope to capture the soul. I draw for the children at school assemblies. It makes me happy when students say my art has inspired them to be an artist. I hope to continue travel for inspiration and to share my art around the globe.'” \nJoel Anderson has been to Peru\, China\, Japan\, Canada\, and across the USA where he has spoken on autism\, inclusion\, and friendship. Anderson’s art has been featured in The California Museum in Sacramento\, The National Art Center of Tokyo in Tokyo\, Japan\, The H.H. Dorjie Chang Buddha II Cultural & Art Museum in Covina\, The Soho Gallery for Digital Art in NYC\, and more. \nRegistration is required\, visit cplevents.org to register. This program is sponsored by the “Jim and Bette Sherman Fund”.
