SUMMARY:CoSA Preview Night
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA)\, San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, welcomes prospective CoSA students and families to CoSA Preview Night. The event takes place on Tuesday\, February 25 at 6 pm at the Coronado Performing Arts Center at 650 D Avenue. The preview night is open to all San Diego students who will be in grades 9 through 12 for the 2025-2026 school year. In addition\, students can begin the audition process by visiting CoSASanDiego.com. \nThis CoSA Preview Night features something new and exciting: current CoSA students will prepare performances and show off projects so the community gets a snapshot of the quality of  work created by CoSA students. It’s a great time to learn more about CoSA\, the six different conservatories\, as well as the audition and application process. \n“We’re excited to show prospective students what CoSA artists are up to\,” said Shane Schmeichel\, Director of Special Projects for CUSD. “Our CoSA Preview Night in December welcomed dozens of young artists and their families\, and we are expecting even more guests at our final preview event of the year on February 25th.” \nCoSA is home to more than 175 scholar artists in grades 9 through 12. CoSA provides an intensive\, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego\, who are admitted after an application and audition process. The purpose of the audition process is to build relationships with future teachers and to confirm that the student is passionate and dedicated to the art form so that the student is not overwhelmed once classes have started. The school is dedicated to nurturing students who are prepared to take on the challenge of becoming the next generation of young artists and critical thinkers. \nAll CoSA students attend Coronado High School\, most of whom spend the first three periods of block scheduling in academic courses\, then attend CoSA classes for two and a half hours for arts instruction. With a curriculum designed by professional artists and educators\, students are immersed in their chosen specialty in one of six conservatories: Classical and Contemporary Dance\, Digital Arts (Animation\, Filmmaking\, and Graphic Design)\, Instrumental Music\, Musical Theatre & Drama\, Theatre Production\, Design & Management and Visual Art. \n“Our students have the most amazing opportunities with this pre-professional program\,” said Linda Edison\, President of the CoSA Foundation. “It gives them creativity in doing something they love and fosters responsibility and leadership skills within a community of like-minded students. They have so many opportunities to shine!” \nAbout CoSA\nCoronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory\, home to 175 scholar artists grades 9 through 12\, who attend the nationally ranked Coronado High School. CoSA provides an intense\, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego\, who are admitted after a competitive application/audition process.\nEach school day CoSA offers three or more hours of instruction\, pairing young artists with educators who are also industry specialists. With a curriculum designed by professional artist/educators\, students are immersed in their chosen specialty in one of six conservatories: Classical and Contemporary Dance\, Digital Arts (Animation\, Filmmaking\, and Graphic Design)\, Instrumental Music\, Musical Theatre & Drama\, Theatre Production\, Design & Management and Visual Art. CoSA is a State of California-approved Career Technical Education program.\nOur award-winning student artists perform and exhibit at the Coronado Performing Arts Center on the Coronado High School campus\, in either the 570 seat Main Stage or 80 seat Black Box theatre. Coronado Performing Arts Center is also available for rent to local organizations. About twenty five percent of the CoSA budget is raised each year by the CoSA Foundation. If you would like to see the arts continue to thrive in education\, please consider making a donation at www.cosafoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Alice: Illustrating Wonderland - Art Contest\, Entry Deadline March 31
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Library was founded in 1890. The original library was built as a classical building that architect Harrison Albright designed in 1909. The building still stands at 640 Orange Avenue located in the heart of the Coronado community. This original building serves as the Spreckels Reading Room within the 40\,000 square feet remodeled and expanded library building. The library includes study space at tables and carrels\, lounge seating\, wireless internet access\, a large public meeting room\, conference room\, study rooms\, separate Children’s Library and teen area\, public-access computers\, and collections in various subjects and formats. The library also has several large exhibit spaces where we display curated art from the local Coronado and San Diego community and museum-like curated cultural exhibits. \n \nThis summer\, the library will host Alice: Illustrating Wonderland\, a special exhibit celebrating 160 years of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In honor of this milestone\, we invite artists of all ages to reimagine the whimsy and wonder of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale. Choose a character or scene that inspires you—from the Mad Hatter’s tea party to Alice’s encounter with the Queen of Hearts—and craft your own two-dimensional masterpiece. Winners will receive prizes\, and at least 10 pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit alongside 160 beautifully illustrated editions of the book. Don’t miss this chance to showcase your creativity and become part of Wonderland’s artistic legacy!

SUMMARY:CoSA Visual Arts Showcases "Centered" - A Special Exhibit at C3 Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Visual Arts conservatory is set to enchant guests with the exhibit “Centered” at C3 Gallery at 1845 Strand Way on Tuesday\, April 29 from 5:30 to 7pm. More than 125 pieces from all students will be on display\, including 3D art. The exhibit also features a 2025 Senior Showcase called “Flashback.” \n“The seniors like the ‘Flashback’ theme because they can look through the work they have produced over the last four years and choose works they prefer\,” said Karrie Jackson\, Visual Arts Conservatory Chair. “Their work has really evolved to showcase more advanced technical skill and portraits.” \nThe opening reception will be held in the Nautilus Room\, and the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. \nFor graduating seniors like Ben Byars\, the exhibit is a chance to showcase art that has grown and developed over the years. \n“Of all the subjects I’ve painted and drawn\, portraits have been my favorite\,” said Byars. “This year has led to some of my favorite stylistic and compositional experimentation with portraiture\, and I hope to continue with it going forward.” \nAs conservatory chair\, Jackson is excited that CoSA Visual Arts has expanded this year to accommodate growing interest after running a waitlist for more than ten years. \n“I’m so grateful we can make room for more enthusiastic and skilled student artists\,” said Jackson. “I personally believe creativity should be cultivated and not competitive\, so I am happy more students have the space and the community to cultivate their interest.”
