SUMMARY:Chicano Artists: A History through Today
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) by joining the Library for a lecture celebrating Chicano art and artists. Julia Fister will lead attendees through a brief look at the history of Mexico\, which helps to explain how the movement began and still continues to this day. She will take a look at the precursors to the modern Chicano artists\, and then at the modern Chicano artists in San Diego’s Chicano Park and Los Angeles. \nThis program is presented by San Diego Oasis. \n\nJulia Fister\, a St. Louis\, Missouri native\, graduated from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and from Fontbonne University in St. Louis with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. After an early career in investment banking and several years as a graphic designer\, she arrived at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) as a volunteer after completing a Master’s Degree in Art History at San Diego State University. Fister was soon hired by OMA to create and direct an education program for 5th graders\, later titled ArtQuest\, and within six years\, the program grew to serve over 7\,000 students from Oceanside and the surrounding areas. Moving into the role of Director of Education at OMA\, Fister oversaw ArtQuest and created a robust Education Department\, serving both children and adults. During her 6 1/2 year tenure\, she created a summer camp program\, increased the Free Family Art Day attendance to over 5\,000 family members a year from 600\, revamped the museum’s docent program\, increased the Artist Alliance from 15% to 25% of membership\, created OMA’s first on-site art classroom\, and was instrumental in developing and creating OMA’s first international traveling exhibition. Following OMA\, Fister worked as an education specialist for the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad\, where she revamped and created new educational programming for the museum.

SUMMARY:"The Knot" Dedication
DESCRIPTION:A ceremony is set for 4 pm on Wednesday\, Oct. 19\, to dedicate a sculpture — “The Knot” — recently installed at Promenade Park overlooking Glorietta Bay between City Hall and the Community Center. The community is invited to join the family of the artist and other arts enthusiasts for this free event. Light refreshments will be served after the program. \nA plaque commemorating the piece will be unveiled at the site. The City Council accepted the gift\, which was donated by The Wood Family Trust\, in late 2021 based on a recommendation by the Cultural Arts Commission. The Knot was designed and built by the late artist Jim Wood\, a former Coronado resident and lieutenant commander in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. \nThe location was selected because Wood was stationed at nearby Naval Amphibious Base Coronado\, where he realized his passion for welding pieces of steel and bronze. The Promenade Park location also is a popular site for couples who tie the knot in the nearby grassy area. The City hopes the sculpture becomes a symbolic backdrop for wedding photos. \n“The Knot” is the newest addition to the more than 75 public art pieces in the City’s collection placed throughout Coronado. For more information\, download the Coronado Public Art App on your smartphone or visit CoronadoARTS.com. \nRELATED: \nArt as Infinity (video)

SUMMARY:Holiday Ikebana Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Marina Khudobina demonstrates Ikebana\, a Japanese style of flower arranging\, for the holidays. \nIkebana is the art of Japanese flower arrangement. It can be done by anyone\, any time\, anywhere. \nIkebana requires living flowers. Everything is devoted to creating beauty in the moment\, giving artistic life to transient flowers through the repeated act of arranging them. \nMarina Khudobina was born in Armenia and grew up in Ukraine. She learned Ikebana from a Japanese teacher in Belgium. Khudobina came to San Diego about 30 years ago and happily calls it her hometown! She further studied Ikebana in San Diego with Hiroko Fukuhara\, learning Sogetsu Ikebana\, one of the most recent and innovative movements within this art form. Khudobina has done exhibitions in Waterloo\, Belgium; as well as with Ikebana International at Balboa Park. She also participated in an event at the Oceanside Museum of Art\, and has been a part of Art Alive through the San Diego Museum of Art for many years. \nFor more information about Khudobina and her art\, please see: http://sdvoyager.com/interview/rising-stars-meet-marina-p-khudobina-of-poway.
