SUMMARY:Coronado Island Art and Story Book Show - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tina Christiansen\, ”Time passes through me” Acrylic on Canvas \n\nFree event\, open to the public. Art Exhibition and Opening sponsored by the Coronado Artists Association celebrating its 75th Anniversary. Reception: 6-7:30. Win free art prizes\, meet the artists\, live classical piano music by M.E Booth. \n\nBy Tina Christiansen\, CHS class of ’72. CHS mascot\, acrylic on paper.\nThe Coronado Art Association and the Coronado Public Library are hosting an art exhibition of the collected master works of seven island artists in the Spreckels Reading Room and Gallery at the Library. The show opens Friday May 13\, and runs through August 13\, this year. Who are these artists? They are all Coronadans that have lived here much of their lives. \nThrough their art\, they ‘paint and tell’ things that only an islander would know. They show you things that you might not otherwise see. The show is curated by the Coronado Art Association celebrating it’s 75th anniversary. Story teller and islander artist Tina Christiansen curated the art collection of her fellow Coronado Art Association members. \nThe Spreckels Reading Room itself has been laid out in a format that reads like the giant pages in an artist’s paint book with a story line that follows the art around the room to enlighten readers of the giant “art book” about some of our island secrets. \nAbstract Meditation in Acrylic Ink by Artist Jean Pierre Marques.\nAttend the artists’ reception from 6 to 7:30 pm on Friday\, May 13. Meet the artists at the reception\, vote for your favorite and you may win a work of art as a prize. You must be present to win. \nThree of the artists are offering free art classes through the library for adults\, but class size is small and participants are limited those that first sign up at the reception. Live Classical Pianist Marcus Echols Booth will perform at the event.

SUMMARY:Pysanka Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Learn the Ukrainian art of Pysanka Egg Decorating in this hands-on class from instructor Adriana Wrzesniewski. You’ll create one pysanka egg from start to finish. \nAll pysanky are created the same way\, but the designs and colors vary from egg to egg. All designs are an accumulation of ancient symbols and current motifs arranged in different patterns and differing color schemes. Each pysanka is an individual piece of art work\, since no two eggs are exactly alike. Originally the eggs were kept full to keep the mystical powers intact. Today\, most eggs are emptied and clean to eliminate any worries about smell or broken eggs. The designs are the most important for the well-wishing gifts. Pysanky can be displayed in a multitude of ways from grouping on a plate\, in a bowl or clear vase\, individually in stands\, candle or boiled-egg holders\, and even hanging with embroidery floss and tassles. Pysanky were often placed in the corners of the home and in the thatched roofs to ward off fire\, lightning and high winds. Broken pysanka shells are sprinkled into the soil to ensure healthy crops. \nThe class will last 2.5 hours and all materials will be provided. Space is limited. Registration is recommended. Register at cplevents.org to reserve your seat for this event.
