SUMMARY:Tea with the Spreckels
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEnjoy an afternoon with special guests Lillie and John D. Spreckels. The Spreckels were two of Coronado\, and San Diego’s\, most powerful residents in the late 19th and early 20th century. With fine music\, historical tidbits\, and light refreshments\, this event will bring a bit of Coronado’s past into our today. \nNashville playwright Debbie Mathis Watts and veteran actor Tom Dolan will don customs as Lillie and John as they portray this legendary couple whose leadership in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought unprecedented prosperity to San Diego and Coronado. \nDebbie\, as Lillie\, will perform during the tea historical monologues\, punctuated with piano-vocal renditions of classical piano performances just like John and Lillie Spreckels could have presented in their music room in their Coronado home on Glorietta Bay. Lillie was the wife of a powerful man but did not live in John’s shadow. Lillie\, an accomplished singer from the garden state of New Jersey originally\, she brought her flower growing skills\, first to Hawaii\, where Queen Liliokalani shared some of her flower secrets and then settling in Coronado with her husband John. \nDebbie’s book\, “John and Lillie Spreckels: Diaries\, Desserts\, and San Diego Dreams\,” includes fictionalized diary entries that reveal John and Lillie’s deep love for each other\, with stories from their seafaring adventures along the West Coast. The Spreckels contributions to the San Diego region include the railway\, the Hotel Del Coronado\, The Spreckels Library\, and The Spreckels Theatre. Because much of the couple’s fortune was made from the sugar-refining business\, Debbie decided to add a recipe section that includes some of the desserts Lillie may have prepared for her beloved husband and children. This book will be available for purchase at the event. \nReservations are required. Reserve your space HERE for this one of a kind event.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic Coronado
DESCRIPTION:One of the best ways to experience the history of Coronado is to go on a historic walking tour. This is the secret that Coronado locals know: it takes time to sense the past. When you slow down\, you have a chance to see\, hear\, and remember this place that Hollywood stars\, princes\, and presidents have enjoyed. Everywhere you look in this charming beach town\, you find history. And\, that history is easiest to see on foot – when you have a chance to linger in front of a tiny\, shingled house\, perhaps\, and meet the resident as he comes out into the yard to water his roses and tells you about the multiple generations who have lived in the home. Or\, when you seemingly stumble upon the magical house from which the Wizard of Oz was born. \nWe’re proud to host you on Coronado’s premier walking tour. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. Thank you for your support. \nEvery Sunday at 11 am & Thursday at 1 pm\nLocation: Coronado Historical Association\,\n1100 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nAdmission: Adults $20 | Children (12 & under) $5\nBUY TICKETS HERE\nTours are approximately 90 minutes and two miles at a comfortable pace. SUMMARY:Second Sea Level Rise Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The City is hosting its second virtual workshop on Coronado’s Sea Level Rise planning process. The City invites the community to attend the workshop via Zoom at 5 pm on April 21 to learn more. \n \nThe first step was a Vulnerability Assessment that used a model to evaluate how sea level rise could impact the City over time. A Vulnerability Study was completed and presented to the public last summer. The City recently released the second planning document\, the Adaptation Plan\, which includes a menu of potential strategies. The meeting will review the Vulnerability Study but focus on the adaptation measures. The combined draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan document is available on CommentCoronado.org. \nPlease provide any comments to Project Planner Jane Thornton at jthornton@coronado.ca.us by May 18.
