Dr. Jack D. Bartroff passed away into God’s arms Monday afternoon, May 30 2016, from a brain hemorrhage during his sleep Saturday night.
Jack was born Jackie Dean Bartroff on August 18, 1941 in the Cashmere, Washington home of his parents, Waldo and Wanda Bartroff, a barber and a primary school teacher, respectively. He is survived by his wife Barbara Roane Bartroff, daughter Jeana Bartroff, son Jay Bartroff, daughter-in-law Layla Parast Bartroff, and grandchildren Carolyn Bartroff and Knox Bartroff.
Jack attended undergraduate and dental school at the University of Washington and postdoctoral studies in orthodontics at UCLA. During dental school Jack met Barbara Roane, a 19-year-old dental hygiene student. Jack and Barbara married on July 1, 1967, in Tustin, California. They had been married 48 years when he died.
From 1967-1971 Jack served in the US Navy as an dental officer, during which he and Barbara were stationed in Japan. After returning to the US, Jack did his orthodontic training at UCLA, then began private practice in San Diego in 1973. He maintained orthodontic practices in Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo before retiring in 1995.
In these years Jack was turning his attention to God. In 1996 he surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ, and enjoyed especially the changes in his relationships. Jack and Barbara moved to Coronado in 1998 where they were active in Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. Jack played the African Djembe drum and often accompanied the church praise band.
In 2006 Jack was awarded Coronado Honorary Citizen award for coming to the rescue of a neighbor who was being violently attacked by an intruder; he interrupted the attack and subdued the attacker until police arrived.
He loved playing tennis, which he did almost daily until his passing. Some of his favorite friends he met on the tennis court. Jack played amateur USTA tennis competitively into his 60s and greatly enjoyed picking up tennis games at Morley Field, Coronado Tennis Center, and during his travels around the world. Jack volunteered as a wheelchair tennis coach in Point Loma and Rancho Bernardo.
Jack will be remembered as a dedicated provider and protector to his family, and for his charm, humor and athleticism. A public memorial service with a reception following will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 2 PM at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, 959 C Ave, Coronado.
